What happened?
The crowd murmured amongst themselves, and before they knew it, a large number of people had gathered.
Even those who were so hungry they had no strength struggled to their feet and looked in that direction with difficulty.
Just then, several horse-drawn carriages slowly approached from a distance.
The back of the carriage was filled with bags and sacks of things.
However, the people only glanced at it before looking away.
After all, they won't be given these things anyway, and it's daytime anyway, so they might as well just watch the excitement.
Even from a distance, they could see that the woman sitting in the middle seemed to smile and then say something.
As soon as he finished speaking, everyone started to move.
They all gathered around the carriage, unloading the cargo while waving to them.
Judging from their expressions, it seemed they wanted them to pass.
Those present were even more confused.
"They want us to come over, don't they?"
Everyone nodded.
"Shall we go over there?"
Everyone shook their heads.
"Have you forgotten what those people did to us a while ago?"
One sentence reminded everyone of those humiliating days.
At that time, they were so hungry that they went to the gate of the prefectural governor's mansion to beg for some food.
However, those guards gave them a severe beating.
"The Prefect's Mansion is not a place for charity. People like you lowly commoners deserve to starve to death. How dare you even think of coming here to beg for food? How can you be so shameless?"
As they spoke, they stepped on their faces, and some even urinated on them, subjecting them to extreme humiliation and forcing them to stay away from the prefect's mansion from then on.
And now, waving to them are the same guards from that day.
They naturally wouldn't go over to these people.
But the guards were in tears.
They turned around and looked at Gu Jingchun, who was smiling at them.
They glanced again at the menacing-looking men behind Gu Jingchun, feeling as if their swords were about to slash towards their necks.
"Come quickly, we're distributing food for free."
The guards shouted.
They shouted loudly, but the person on the other side remained unmoved.
"Don't go there, it's definitely a trap. Why would they be so kind as to give us food back?"
"I think so too. There must be some conspiracy involved."
Neither of them moved, and for a time, the two sides were locked in a standoff.
Finally, the guards couldn't bear it any longer. Fearing that Gu Jingchun would kill them, they immediately knelt down and begged to personally deliver the food to the disaster victims.
Gu Jingchun gave a cold laugh.
"It seems you've bullied the people quite a bit, which is why they'd rather starve than accept your food."
Gu Jingchun smiled as he spoke.
"In that case, you might as well entrust your lives to the people."
“If they have any complaints about you, I will kill you all immediately.”
The crowd nodded through their tears and quickly carried the grain to the other side.
When the civilians saw the guards rushing towards them carrying a package, they were so frightened that they kept backing away and eventually ran away.
The guards behind them were almost in tears. If the people in front hadn't completely ignored them, they would have knelt down before them by now.
"Don't run, don't run! We won't hurt you, we're just bringing you food."
But after he finished speaking, everyone ran away.
Only those who were barely clinging to life, those who were on their last breath and knew they couldn't escape, looked at them in horror.
Because these guards actually started fighting over it right in front of them.
"This is the food I'm giving you."
No, don't take his, take mine.
His rice isn't good; it's from last year. Mine is this year's new rice. Here, take this; it's delicious. Steam it when you get home, and eating this will give you energy.
He had barely finished speaking when he was pulled aside by the people behind him.
Another guard brought him a bowl of hot porridge.
"Come on, finish your porridge. You'll have strength after that, and then you can go get your food."
As he spoke, he helped the person sit up and personally fed the porridge into the person's mouth.
The people hiding in the shadows watched this scene with such anger that they clenched their fists and tears streamed down their faces uncontrollably.
"Those bastards!"
"They didn't want to starve us to death, so they tried to poison us instead."
"This is intolerable!"
"I...I'm going to go and fight them right now."
As they spoke, they charged toward the guards.
"You bastards, I'm going to fight you to the death."
The guards, seeing the menacing crowd charging towards them, initially wanted to run away.
But then he remembered Gu Jingchun's words and it was as if he could see his own head falling off. Without thinking, he immediately knelt down.
"I beg you, please, just give me some food."
The crowd, who were about to fight to the death, stopped in their tracks upon hearing the word "grain," and then looked down to see the grain being held high in the guard's hand.
They blinked.
"Is the food for us?"
The guards nodded.
"You poisoned it?"
The guards quickly shook their heads.
"No, no, absolutely not. These are all good. You should take them back and eat them quickly, and then notify the people to come and collect their grain."
