Chapter 52 Roasted Sweet Potatoes Make a Great Contribution

The crying startled the people eating sweet potatoes inside the house.

Ma Wencai looked at Song Shulan, who was crying and covered in snot and tears, with a puzzled expression. "Brother, I gave you all the sweet potatoes, why are you still crying?"

Song Shulan struggled to wipe the tears from her face with her hands, which were bound by wooden shackles, and said between sobs.

“I miss my grandmother. She used to roast sweet potatoes for me like this when I was little. And this roasted sweet potato tastes just like hers. I’ve been looking for a long time but I haven’t found one that tastes so similar.”

After saying that, he took another big bite of the sweet potato, wanting to taste the same flavor he remembered.

Ma Wencai scratched his head, walked over to Xu Jinhuan and whispered, "Boss Xu, do you think if we ask him questions now, can we use the excuse of roasting sweet potatoes to get him to confess everything?"

Xu Jinhuan nodded and smiled, "You did a good job today, I'll give you an extra chicken leg tonight."

Ma Wencai was a little embarrassed by the sudden praise, then he smiled smugly at Li Yichang and showed off a bit.

Li Yichang was utterly exasperated. Had this guy forgotten that this place originally belonged to him? Now that the money was coming from the people, what was he showing off for?

Xu Jinhuan didn't notice the subtle exchange between the two people beside her. She walked over to Song Shulan and gently coaxed her.

"As long as you tell me everything you know, I will definitely spare your life. Then you can eat as many roasted sweet potatoes as you want."

After hearing this, Song Shulan fell into deep thought. He had just cried for a while and released all his emotions, so he was somewhat rational now.

He tentatively asked, "Really? Even if the assassins from Deyilou come, you can still protect me?"

Xu Jinhuan nodded with a smile, his tone carrying a hint of domineering, "As long as I don't agree, no one else can kill you."

Song Shulan recalled her previous battle with Xu Jinhuan and knew that Xu Jinhuan was indeed quite capable, so she asked again, "Are the roasted sweet potatoes really unlimited? I can eat them whenever I want?"

Xu Jinhuan suppressed a laugh and continued nodding, "It's always available, and it still tastes the same."

After receiving an affirmative answer, Song Shulan breathed a sigh of relief. "I am indeed a bronze-level freelancer at Deyilou, and I have always made a living by taking on missions. This mission actually failed a long time ago."

Xu Jinhuan and Li Yichang exchanged a glance after hearing this, but remained silent and waited for Song Shulan to finish speaking.

"This mission doesn't seem to be a level three mission at all, but for some reason the manager assigned it as a level three mission. I didn't want to take it."

However, Deyilou has a rule that casual players must take on a fixed task each month. The manager assigned this task as a fixed task, so I had no choice but to accept it.

That Xiang Linsheng was also an unlucky fellow chosen by the manager.

Song Shulan smiled helplessly as she spoke, and then continued.

"Our mission was to disguise ourselves and impersonate someone else to join the exile group, and then quietly wait for the bandits to arrive."

During the bandits' killings, they randomly took a few witnesses with them, then went to the capital to appeal to the emperor by beating the Dengwen Drum.

Xu Jinhuan was surprised, "Appeal to the Emperor? Who are you allowed to appeal to?"

Song Shulan replied, "Wu Guifei's mother's elder brother is Wu Daoyi."

Li Yichang's mouth dropped open in astonishment. It turned out that there was a hidden bird lying in ambush beside them during their previous operation.

Xu Jinhuan sneered and said, "This is interesting. The person who issued this task must be someone from the imperial court, and someone who is at odds with the Wu family."

However, he clearly knew the bandits were going to harm people, but instead of trying to save them, he only thought about collecting evidence; he wasn't exactly a saint either.

Song Shulan nodded, "Because I was forced to take on this task, I have been keeping an eye on the manager of Deyilou."

It turned out that he had been spending a lot of time with the prince's eunuchs during that period and had acquired many treasures. I suspect the person who issued the mission might be from the prince's faction.

Xu Jinhuan looked puzzled. "The current crown prince can't be that poor, can he? He can only afford to post the third-level figures of Deyilou?"

Song Shulan thought for a moment and said, "On the day I accepted the mission, I heard a rumor that Deyilou does not accept missions related to exiled people."

So I was a little surprised when I found out the quest was to join the exile party. Now that I think about it, the quest was probably just thrown into the bronze tier.

Xu Jinhuan nodded, accepting Song Shulan's explanation. She suddenly asked, "Then why didn't you leave quietly, but instead made such a big show of running away?"

Song Shulan smiled helplessly, "I really wanted to sneak away, but Xiang Linsheng, for some reason, didn't tell me anything and just did it on his own."

Xu Jinhuan nodded. It seemed that Lin Sheng might not be so simple after all. He would have to ask him more questions during the interrogation.

Then Xu Jinhuan looked at Song Shulan and asked with a smile, "Since you're impersonating someone else, what's your real name? This shouldn't be your true appearance, right?"

Song Shulan's face was full of pride when she mentioned this. She pointed to her face and said with a smile, "My name is Su Sanxi. Of course, this is not my real appearance. I'm wearing a pigskin mask."

Xu Jinhuan blinked. She had heard of human skin masks, but she had never seen a pigskin mask before.

Su Sanxi laboriously touched his face, rubbed the edges of his face, and quickly tore off a mask, revealing a handsome face.

"This mask is custom-made by me. It looks fairly realistic when you wear it, but you can't look at it too closely. If you look at it too much, it will still look fake."

Xu Jinhuan took the mask, which was as thin as a cicada's wing, and the surprise in his eyes grew stronger. This guy is really talented!

They are still innovative talents!

“I know everything you’ve said. As long as Xiang Linsheng’s words are similar to yours, you won’t have to wear the shackles anymore.”
