Chapter 1

Summer 1976

In July, the weather was hot and muggy, and the green train was packed with people.

The smell of sweat, smelly feet, and boiled eggs filled the small space.

A few shirtless men were playing cards, occasionally swearing.

Some are returning home to visit relatives, some are looking for work, and some are college students returning home.

With the help of the flight attendant, Su Xiaoluo found her seat, put her backpack on it, and thanked him obediently.

The girl had fair skin, like a freshly peeled egg, long black curly hair braided into two pigtails, bright eyes, and looked as delicate as a doll.

Even though the flight attendant had seen many beautiful girls, this was the first time he had seen a girl as pretty and lively as this little girl.

The little girl was traveling alone, so he gave her a few words of advice: "There are a lot of people on the road, so don't ignore people who try to chat with you. I'll call you when we reach the city."

The flight attendant was still a little worried. She didn't know what the girl's parents were thinking. They let her go out alone. Were they afraid that she would be bullied by bad people?

Su Xiaoluo's eyes lit up.

There are many bad people?

Worse than her?

She has been on the ship for fifteen years. Her master says that she is the worst person on the ship. Even the big white cat on the ship runs away when it sees her.

You know what the bad guys under you are like.

She thanked him sweetly: "Thank you, flight attendant brother."

The girl was pretty and had a sweet voice, so the steward was very pleased with her calling him "brother". He left happily.

Su Xiaoluo looked out the window, and tears welled up in her eyes as she recalled the scene of her farewell to her master. Her master was the one who picked her up by the river when she was three years old.

She picked up the big white bun in her hand and took a big bite. It smelled so good.

The food here is so delicious!

Along the way, she bought three big steamed buns, a bottle of soda, three popsicles, and a bag of White Rabbit milk candy.

Most of the money the master gave her was visibly gone. But the master said that the family that came to look for her must be very rich and eat meat every meal.

She caught all the fish that could run on the surface, and the rest were too small to have much meat even if she caught them.

She hadn't eaten meat for a long time, and if it was because of this, she would definitely leave her master. She recognized her master as her relative, so she must bring a whole truck full of meat to honor her master.

Soon the seats around Su Xiaoluo were filled with people.

"Little girl, are you alone?" the lady sitting opposite Su Luo asked enthusiastically.

Su Xiaoluo glanced at her. Her eyes were dark, her brow bones were prominent, and her cheeks were fleshless.

Do all the bad guys in the world look like this?

It looked a little better. Su Xiaoluo frowned slightly, with a hint of disgust.

The lady across the street saw Su Xiaoluo talking and said with regret: "She is so pretty, but it's a pity that she is dumb."

Su Xiaoluo also explained, moving his eyes to the side. The sky was covered with dark clouds, and a storm was coming soon.

"Little girl, have an apple. It's home-grown and very sweet!" The lady opposite handed a bright red apple to Su Xiaoluo with a deliberate flattering look on her face.

Su Xiaoluo swallowed her saliva unconsciously. The apple was evenly red and looked delicious.

She didn't think much about it and started to enjoy it.

This person is really stupid. The master said that apples can be exchanged for money. He gave it to others for no reason. The bad guy is really stupid!

The old lady smiled as she watched Su Xiaoluo eat the apple. She liked her more and more because she was so pretty. She was even willing to give the girl to a trafficker and take her home to be her grandson's wife.

Thinking of this, she gave Su Xiaoluo another apple.

Su Xiaoluo smiled sweetly at her, and the old lady's heart almost melted. She even thought of a name for her great-grandson.

There was a loud bang on the ground, followed by a thunderclap, and then raindrops hit the ground with a crackling sound. The stuffy workshop suddenly felt a little cooler.

The rain had been falling for a while. Su Xiaoluo had originally closed her eyes to rest, but suddenly she sensed a chilly aura and opened her eyes.

A man came up from the train door. He was wearing a raincoat and a bamboo hat. A flash of lightning flashed across his face, and it was bright and dark, very eye-catching.

The man was in his forties, and he didn't know what was bulging under his raincoat. A fishy smell mixed with a well-known stench wafted in, and everyone covered their noses involuntarily.

"Bai Zhi, are you carrying stinky fish?" the flight attendant asked.

The man ignored her question and went straight to the opposite side of Su Xiaoluo and sat next to the old lady.

The old lady was startled and said angrily, "You idiot, did you even take off your raincoat? What's that smell?"

The man turned his head and glared at her, and she immediately shut up. The man had a sallow complexion and fierce eyes, especially the scar above his eyebrow, which was particularly vicious.

Su Xiaoluo was born with yin and yang eyes, and saw two black air entangled around his shoulders. This man was entangled by evil spirits and lived past midnight.

Su Xiaoluo suddenly left her seat and got off the bus. She ran straight to the peanut stand and bought a bag of freshly roasted peanuts.

But this bag of fried peanuts cost only 1.2 yuan, and she spent one-third of her savings.

She was depressed and thought that money was really wasted!

As Su Xiaoluo was thinking, a man suddenly ran over and bumped into her. The peanuts fell all over the place, mixed with mud and soaked in the rain.

"Sorry." The man apologized and tried to leave, but Su Xiaoluo quickly grabbed him, stretched out her tender white hands, frowned and said, "One dollar, two dollars!"

"We're going to catch the thief and we'll compensate you later." The man was a little surprised at the girl's great strength.

"No way!" Su Xiaoluo flatly refused, "Your forehead is black, and there will be a bloody disaster. If you don't pay, you won't have a chance!"

At this moment, another figure passed them and rushed into the crowd with vigor.

"I'll leave Ting to you!" the man shouted, and then looked at Su Xiaoluo: "I saw that you are pretty, and I wanted to get into a fight with you, but you cursed me to death? Are you cursing me? You are young and you want to learn well, but you are cheating here. Believe me, I will arrest you and put you in jail for a few days."

Seeing that he didn't believe her, Su Xiaoluo didn't argue with him and insisted on getting back the money he had spent on the peanuts.

The man smiled and took out a big banknote from his pocket and handed it to the girl: "Tell me your name and I will compensate you."

This was the first time Su Xiaoluo had seen a group reunion. Her eyes widened. She pretended to be calm and said, "If you are in big trouble, I can sell you a talisman to save your life!"

"Do you know who I am? You are lying to me." The man couldn't help but find it funny. If this girl was pretty, he would definitely take her to the police station.

"No matter who you are, if you buy this talisman, you are dead!" Su Xiaoluo said solemnly.
