Chapter 255: Leniency for Confession
Li Rongsen took a deep breath. He cleaned An Yan's wound first, and then prepared to express his feelings. He said, "An Yan, I..."
At this time, Yan Qingqiu came in from outside. He walked in with a bowl of medicine, placed it on the table, and said to An Yan, "You will apply this medicine later. It is freshly prepared. It can relieve pain and stop bleeding. It is not afraid of contact with water."
"How can you touch water? You can't touch it for the next two days." Li Rongsen said.
Yan Qingqiu smiled and said, "That's just what I said. Just use your left hand to eat when the time comes."
"I can feed you." Li Rongsen quickly responded.
"No need." An Yan instinctively declined. She stretched out her left hand and shook it, saying, "My hand is also very flexible." Then she asked Li Rongsen, "Did you want to say something to me just now?"
Li Rongsen was startled at first. He had a little courage just now, but now it was gone. He could only say, "Nothing. I just wanted to tell you to be careful these few days."
An Yan nodded and said, "I understand." Then she asked Yan Qingqiu, "How is the old man in the North Courtyard doing?"
"He and his little daughter hugged each other and cried bitterly, as if they had suffered a great injustice." Yan Qingqiu told her everything, and then said, "I really don't want to pay attention to them anymore. I can just throw them out."
"That won't work. Beichen's injury still needs her treatment. Once he's cured, we'll send them away." An Yan replied.
Yan Qingqiu said, "That depends on whether they want treatment or not. If they don't want treatment, then we can just let them go. That way, we won't have to worry about it."
An Yan didn't say anything, but just looked down at Li Rongsen patiently applying medicine on her palm.
An old man came over and said to An Yan, "City Lord, what should we do now?"
"Do they mean to leave?" An Yan asked.
"Of course not. The girl's legs can't move yet, so she naturally wants the city lord to treat it." The old man answered her.
"The medicine in the cauldron is ready, just let her take it." An Yan answered coldly, raised her right hand, and blew the wind gently in her palm. The coolness made the wound feel much more comfortable.
The old man lowered his eyes and said to An Yan, "City Lord, that old man is a bit stubborn. I hope you won't make a fuss about it."
"I know, for your sake."
The old man immediately bowed again and said, "I would like to thank the city lord on his behalf."
"Is he convinced?" Yan Qingqiu interrupted and asked.
The old man was stunned at first, then said: "Needless to say, he has to admit defeat. Is there any excuse for this?"
An Yan didn't care about these things and said, "I should go now. I'll leave this place to you to clean up."
"The city lord still has an injury on his hand. He should stay for a few more days to recuperate. Why are you in such a hurry to leave?" the old man asked. He really couldn't bear to see An Yan leave so early, otherwise he would feel that life here would be boring. Having her was like the New Year. Even the subordinates were happy. Finally, there was someone to serve them and something to do.
"I have something to do over there, so I can't stay." An Yan was worried about Wen Jiaer. She didn't know how he was doing these days. Although she had prescribed medicine for him, it might not be able to completely stop his cough.
Li Rongsen looked at An Yan's face, as if he had guessed something, and instantly let go of the unspoken regret he had just felt. He almost forgot that An Yan was especially good not only to him, but also to Wen Jiaer.
The old man said, "In that case, I will ask them to arrange a grand banquet tonight."
"No need, I'll leave soon and won't eat here anymore." An Yan told him
The old man's face fell, and he looked lost. He could only nod and said okay, then turned around and walked out.
Yan Qingqiu asked An Yan, "What's the matter? Look at how sad that old man is. He's so pitiful. Even the way he walks doesn't look happy."
"You are reluctant to give up the big meal." An Yan had already seen through his thoughts.
Yan Qingqiu curled his lips and said, "One night won't make a difference."
"No, it's time to go back." An Yan insisted, thinking about finding some more things to bring to Wen Jiaer, so she called Bai Shichen and asked, "How have things been these past two days? Is everything in the house complete? Is there anything else you need?"
"The house burned down."
"What?" An Yan frowned, she seemed a little unconvinced.
Li Rongsen, who was standing by, also felt that something seemed to be happening, and couldn't help but prick up his ears to listen.
Bai Shichen sighed and said, "It was just burned down in a fire anyway."
"Was it man-made or an accident?" An Yan asked.
"Don't worry about it. We're cleaning up the mess right now. I had the workers rebuild the house yesterday. It will be exactly the same soon. It just takes some time."
"Is everything destroyed?" An Yan asked.
"It's not bad. I grabbed some things."
"Where's Wen Jiaer? How is he?"
"He's fine, nothing happened." Bai Shichen was obviously lying, because he was in the hospital and sitting beside Wen Jiaer's bed. He was too tired these days, so he kept coughing and was very weak.
Wen Jiaer didn't want to make An Yan worry, so he told Bai Shichen not to tell her the truth and just say that he was fine.
But An Yan was not so easily deceived. She seemed to understand something and said, "I'll be back soon and will come to see you guys right away."
"No, no, we're still cleaning up here."
"Is everything okay where you live in front?" An Yan asked him.
"There's nothing wrong with me, it's just his side that's burned." Bai Shichen told the truth.
An Yan frowned and said, "That's very strange. Did you call the police?"
"No need to call the police." Bai Shichen was almost unable to cope because An Yan's questions one after another made him unable to cope.
An Yan didn't ask any more questions and said, "Okay, see you later." Then she hung up the phone.
Li Rongsen asked her, "What happened?"
"Bai Shichen's house caught fire, but the place where he lived was fine. Only Wen Jiaer's yard was burned. He also told me not to call the police. It's really strange. Does he not care, or is there some other reason?" An Yan frowned. She thought there must be something strange about this.
"I'm afraid it was one of our own people who started the fire, so they said there's no need to call the police." Yan Qingqiu said this casually.
But An Yan thought it was very likely to be the case, and she said, "Let's go, we'll set off now."
"Okay, pack up your things and I'll drive." Li Rongsen said as he started to help An Yan pack up.
An Yan said, "I don't have much, just a bag." As she was about to leave the room, she said to Yan Qingqiu, "Go tell the old man."
"I remembered that there is still a needle in Beichen's body. Will you pull it out for her?" Yan Qingqiu asked.
"It's okay. It will dissolve automatically after three months. We took care of it for her the day she came." An Yan motioned him to go quickly.
The three of them rushed back, and their first stop was Bai Shichen's home.
As it turned out, Bai Shichen was not at home, which surprised An Yan. She looked at Li Rongsen.
Li Rongsen took out his cell phone and called Bai Shichen, asking, "Where are you now? We are at your door."
Bai Shichen was surprised. He glanced at Wen Jiaer and said, "I'll go back now."
Li Rongsen continued, "Do you know where Wen Jiaer is? He hasn't been answering calls on his phone, only replying to messages. An Yan thinks he must be unable to speak, so is he in the hospital?"
Bai Shichen frowned, finally feeling that he could no longer hide it, and said, "I'm in the hospital with him."
Wen Jiaer was surprised to hear his confession.
