My heart raced instantly, and I hurriedly replied, somewhat flustered, "Kids like a lot of things, and their interests change quickly. They'll probably forget about it soon!"
He nodded slightly, but then added, "That's true! But she really likes you right now! So before she forgets you, I don't want to see you do anything to upset her."
Although his expression remained gentle, his words carried an undeniable sense of pressure.
My heart skipped a beat.
He wondered to himself if he already knew that I had accidentally made his daughter cry today?
Thinking of this, I unconsciously gripped the hem of my clothes, and my breathing became rapid with nervousness.
"But she wants me to be her mother? That's a bit of a dilemma, I don't think it's...appropriate."
He didn't seem to care about my embarrassment and calmly said, "You don't need to take what she said too seriously, but you can play along for now, as long as it makes her happy."
He looked at me quietly, waiting for my answer.
For a moment, I didn't know how to respond to him.
An awkward atmosphere filled the air.
Finally, after some internal struggle, I mustered up the courage to ask, "Then... then how do you expect me to act?"
He smiled slightly, as if he had expected me to ask this question, and continued unhurriedly, "You promised her you would attend the parent-teacher conference, right? Then just do as you promised."
"Actually... I was just saying that because I was afraid she would keep crying, and I was planning to visit my brother in a few days!" I explained softly.
"And I...I have a boyfriend!" I replied casually, pretending to be innocent.
He gently adjusted the delicate gold-rimmed glasses on his nose, then spoke in a calm and firm tone.
"Since you've already agreed, you have to keep your word and fulfill your promise. Just put on a show for her!"
He turned around and took out a beautifully packaged box from behind him, handing it to me.
Upon opening it, I found a set of the latest clothing from a luxury brand and a beautiful handbag inside.
“Wear this outfit on the day of the parent-teacher meeting, dress up nicely, I don’t want my daughter to be sad.”
