Chapter 21 Demon-Slaying Island Exam 4 (It doesn't say you can't use superpowers again)

"That's inhumane, no, it's utterly devoid of any spirit!" Xia Xiang said angrily. "How can a leader be like that? Pushing subordinates to their deaths."

“Yes,” the black-clad demon envoy said, “but we can’t entirely blame him. It’s actually related to the workplace environment here.”

"Oh~, tell me more," Xia Xiang continued, playing the straight man.

"Here, it's all about slacking off and staying alive. There's no need to compete for resources at all," the black-clad demon envoy shrugged. "We're all destined to be eliminated anyway. What's the use of having such a high position? The only advantages are having more underlings and a slightly larger share of resources."

"The advantages and disadvantages are completely disproportionate. If we encounter some ambitious demon-slaying warriors, even we high-level ones will just behead the dead."

"I suspect you're subtly criticizing me," Xia Xiang glanced at him sideways.

“Since you don’t want to be the Valley Master, then I’ll take over. I’m more interested.” Xia Xiang took out the Demon-Slaying Slash again, looking eager to try it out.

She knew that it was nothing for a demon-slaying warrior to cut down these small, weak souls; the real challenge was dealing with these large, corrupted beings.

"Alright, since you're willing, I won't stop you." The black-clad demon envoy changed direction and walked unhurriedly, leading Xia Xiang to a palace in the center of the light source. After several turns, they arrived at a room in the back.

"This," the black-clad demon envoy said, pointing to a room.

"Come in with me," Xia Xiang stopped the black-clad demon envoy who was about to leave. "Otherwise, I'll report you for trying to usurp the throne and deliberately bringing me here."

The black-clad demon envoy: "..."

He must have been out for too long. Has Demon Island been corrupted by demonic energy? Even the children are so wicked? He himself seems so innocent!

——

"Come in if you're here, best two out of three," a deep voice came from inside the room.

"No need for three rounds, I'll beat you in one!" Xia Xiang drew her Demon Slayer sword and violently kicked down the door.

As light streamed into the room, only a huge human figure could be seen sitting on the floor with its back to the door.

There were snack bags and soda bottles all around, and a large TV was in front of them, which was constantly pressing the game controller as they came in.

"Old Black, I'll clear this area a bit, get me a dozen sodas, and a few bags of my favorite flavor of potato chips, put them in the usual spot." The enormous humanoid figure didn't stop what it was doing, nor did it turn to look at them, silently giving the order.

"Yes," the black-clad demon envoy said skillfully as he walked to the snack shelf and beverage refrigerator.

"Hey, little girl, don't be shy, please have a seat." The enormous humanoid figure pointed to the clean spot next to him.

"Thank you," Xia Xiang said, sitting down without ceremony and taking the soda bottle the black-clad demon envoy had opened for him. "You're the Valley Master?"

“Exactly,” the enormous humanoid figure finally stopped what it was doing. “Old Black, let me introduce myself, the Valley Master.”

The black-clad demon envoy nodded obediently and stood respectfully to the side.

"The person in front of us is Gu Youyou, the 99th Valley Master of Yanyan Valley on Bamo Island. She has been in power for 159 years, 3 months and 6 days, making her the longest-reigning Valley Master."

"The Valley Master's hobbies are playing video games and eating snacks. His favorites are mint-flavored soda and tomato-flavored potato chips. He is almost unbeatable when it comes to playing video games."

"..." Xia Xiang wondered if she had hit her head again, or if she was hallucinating.

Why is all of this so ridiculous? Isn't this supposed to be a serious and proper exam?

“Little girl, this isn’t an illusion,” Gu Youyou gulped down a mouthful of soda. “We are demon-exorcising warriors who have fallen into demonic possession, not demons. We do nothing wrong, nor do we harm anyone.”

"When your great-great-great-grandfather was still a cell, we fought against the demon realm to uphold justice. Do you really think you can just cut us down?"

Gu Youyou put down her soda, took the towel Lao Hei handed her to wipe her hands, and then grabbed another bottle of soda. "It's because of the demonic energy that I came here to retire."

"But the environment here is terrible," Xia Xiang said with some disdain, looking around the empty hall. "With those demons roaming outside, how can we live a peaceful life?"

"These days, the demon-slaying warriors are like weeds, each crop weaker than the last. Locking up the demons won't completely eliminate them; we can only let a few demon-slaying warriors in each year to clean up the mess."

"Was Old Black a demon-slaying warrior before?"

"Hmm," the black-clad demon envoy nodded.

"What about Lao Bai...?" Xia Xiang suddenly asked, feeling a little guilty. Why did she feel a sense of guilt for killing her own kind?

"no"

Xia Xiang breathed a sigh of relief upon receiving the answer from the black-clad demon.

"Alright, I'm absolutely fed up with being the valley master. If there wasn't no one outside to keep me in check, and if Old Hei didn't want a promotion, I would have gone to sleep in the deep valley long ago. Why would I be here playing video games and wasting my time?"

Gu Youyou stopped what she was doing and looked at Xia Xiang. "I'll give you three chances. Defeat me, and I'll make this Valley Master's position for you."

"What exactly is Deep Valley?" Xia Xiang asked curiously after Gu Youyou and Lao Hei mentioned it.

"It's the place where those demon-slaying warriors who couldn't control their demonic nature sleep," Gu Youyou explained calmly. "It's also the place where people like us, who have nothing better to do, go to sleep in."

"Oh," Xia Xiang's mood suddenly dipped.

Demon-slaying warriors are powerful, but they are still human and cannot compare to those unscrupulous demons, which is why they fall into demonic possession for various reasons.

"I don't want to be the valley master. Can you grant me one request?" Xia Xiang unceremoniously grabbed a bag of snacks.

"Let me think about it," Gu Youyou said, sipping her drink through a straw and nodding after downing five more bottles of soda. "If you want to make a request, you have to win five games in total."
