Chapter 14 The Kindness of Strangers

Jiang Tiecheng glanced at Captain Zhang and thought to himself, "I've done such a big thing, and Captain Zhang hasn't given me any thanks?"

That shouldn't be the case; I've lived here for 60 years, after all.

People in this era are sincere and pure, and heroes like myself who act bravely for a just cause should be commended.

It's not that we're envious of those bonuses or anything like that.

At least if it's about giving yourself recognition, you'll have an absolute advantage when you go to the place where you were sent to work as an educated youth.

When I return to the city in the future, I will definitely prioritize myself.

She stared at Captain Zhang with innocent and naive eyes, making Captain Zhang feel confused and a little guilty.

What does Jiang Tiecheng mean by this?

Why is this grown man staring at me like that?

This is him discovering his own thoughts. Wait a minute, this young man isn't a mind reader, how could he know what he's thinking?

He patted Jiang Tiecheng on the shoulder with a smile.

"Xiao Jiang, thank you so much this time. Our commendation for you will be delivered to your brigade later."

Captain Zhang had already planned that the reward would be followed by his transfer order, and he would have to go back and persuade their captain.

Jiang Tiecheng's smile immediately became more genuine than before.

"Captain Zhang, I don't care about rewards; the safety of the people is paramount."

Such polite words and pleasantries naturally had to be spoken well, and as expected, Captain Zhang was even more satisfied with the young man in front of him.

It's rare to see such an upright, dedicated, and capable young person.

Jiang Tiecheng finally felt relieved and got into the car.

He found his seat on his ticket, but to his surprise, this time he was assigned a sleeper berth, specifically the lower berth.

Sitting on the lower bunk, Jiang Tiecheng was so comfortable that he lay down directly on the quilt.

He didn't care about the people coming and going around him; he simply pulled the blanket over himself and fell asleep.

I don't think I'll have to work so hard for the remaining two days and two nights of the trip.

It's true that hard work pays off; otherwise, sitting in a hard seat for another two days and two nights would have left my butt and legs completely worn out.

At that moment, Wang Dazhuang was giving Chen Ruixue instructions.

"Comrade Xiao Chen, I know that you and Comrade Jiang Tiecheng are very good friends."

Without your help, the bomb disposal mission on the train wouldn't have been completed so successfully.

These are some small tokens of our appreciation for Comrade Jiang Tiecheng, but we know he will definitely not accept them.

So I'll leave the things here for now.

"After we get off the bus, you can hand it over to Comrade Jiang Tiecheng."

Chen Ruixue originally wanted to refuse, but when she looked back at Jiang Tiecheng, she remembered that Jiang Tiecheng had nothing of value.

It wasn't until evening that Jiang Tiecheng finally opened his eyes.

After sleeping all day, I'm finally awake, but now I'm hungry again. My stomach is rumbling. In this day and age, the body is chronically depleted.

Five big steamed buns were really just for filling the bottom of the bowl.

It's all thanks to the meat buns.

When I looked up, I saw a pair of bright eyes staring at me with a smile on their face.

This startled Jiang Tiecheng.

"Chen Ruixue, what are you doing here?"

"Why can't I be here? You, the great hero, enjoy special treatment, so shouldn't I, your little follower, also get some of the benefits?"

Are you hungry?

Chen Ruixue stood up and pushed the two cloth bags on the table directly in front of him.

"What's this?"

How would I know about your things? How could I possibly know what they are?

"Mine? How could that be? I have nothing but the little army green satchel under my pillow."

“These really are yours. Comrade Wang specifically told me before I got off the bus that all these things were for you.”

Please don't look down on their good intentions.

"Look at those two military green satchels under the seats, and those two bundles."

"And these two cloth bags on the table, and all these bags and packages, are all yours."

"That net bag on the shelf is full of your things too."

Jiang Tiecheng paused for a moment, then remembered Wang Dazhuang, that honest man.

Wang Dazhuang probably realized his predicament.

Upon opening the two cloth bags, I couldn't help but think to myself, "What a kind person!"

One bag contained plastic-packaged rice cakes, glutinous rice strips, peach crisps, milk powder and malted milk powder, as well as canned beef and canned fruit.

The other bag contained five lunchboxes, one of which contained steamed buns and the other contained scallion pancakes.

There was also a lunchbox containing a lunchbox full of braised pork.

One lunchbox contained shredded potatoes, and the other contained stir-fried tofu with scallions.

People were worried he wouldn't have enough to eat on the road, but this place has everything he could possibly need.

There was also a bag containing a total of 20 tea eggs.

Looking at the smaller packages, you can immediately tell that they've put apples, pears, oranges, and bananas in their pockets. I wonder where they got all this stuff in such a short time.

These days, things like oranges and bananas are hard to come by, especially in a northern city.

These are all specially made products.

He bent down again, looked at the two bags, and squeezed them with his hands. He knew without guessing that they probably contained clothes or something similar.

And there was a roll of luggage on the shelf.

There were three army green mattresses and two cotton quilts on top of them, all in army green.

Just by looking at the thickness, you can tell that they must have chosen the highest standard.

The net bag next to it contained a basin, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, and other daily necessities.

They probably prepared everything they could think of for themselves.
