"Stop hitting us! We've traveled all night for so long, can't we rest for a bit?"
"Rest? What rest?"

"They didn't let us eat yesterday, and they won't let us eat today. How can anyone work?"
The sound of the whip grew louder.

Soon, a group of people appeared in the cave. Upon seeing this group, Chen Laosan whispered to Ouyang Zhenyu.
"These are the 28 people who have never shown up."
The group of men looked rather pathetic, like beggars, with tattered clothes and faces covered in dust.
Just by the stench emanating from them, you could tell they had traveled a long way, and everyone looked pale and thin. Although they were strong laborers, they looked like they had been through a lot.
Many of them had sunken eyes, and it was a truly pitiful sight.
People were forced to pick up their tools and start working, but many of them felt their picks sinking into the rocks with a light, limp thud, without any real strength.
Ouyang Zhenyu could tell from their appearance that they were too exhausted to continue working.
And he looks quite hungry.
They didn't talk to each other; they just kept their heads down and worked.
Ouyang Zhenyu said to Chen Laosan in a low voice.
"Seeing that everyone looks like they haven't eaten anything, how about I get some biscuits and water so they can take turns eating something and resting?"
