Chapter 103: Testing and Perseverance
On the morning of the fifth day, Sizhui walked into the classroom and found an unfamiliar package on the podium. It was wrapped in brown paper and had no sender information, only "Teacher Lan" written on the recipient's side.
He paused, not opening it immediately. Lan Wangji had specifically warned him not to touch unfamiliar items, especially unsigned ones, when he brought him here that morning.
"Teacher Lan, what is that?" the little girl in the front row asked curiously.
"I don't know." Si Zhui took the package to the windowsill, away from the children's seats, and said, "I'll give it to the dean later."
His intuition told him that something was wrong. Ever since he saw the black car that day, he always felt like there were eyes watching him. This package that appeared out of nowhere was like a silent test.
The morning classes went smoothly. Si Zhui deliberately didn't look at the package again until the dean passed by the classroom during the break. He handed the package over and said, "Dean, this appeared on the podium this morning. There is no sender information."
The Dean of Studies was stunned for a moment, then weighed the package and said, "I'll take care of it. Thank you for your hard work."
Si Zhui watched him leave with the package, and his uneasiness eased slightly, but he still didn't let it go. He felt like this was just the beginning.
During lunch break, Wei Wuxian came to deliver lunch as usual. Seeing Sizhui sitting on the steps in a daze, he walked over and sat down next to him. "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Si Zhui shook his head and told him about the package.
Wei Wuxian's face darkened. "It's good that it's unopened." He took out the lunch box from the thermos. "Eat quickly. After you're done, I'll take you somewhere."
"Where are you going?"
“You’ll know when you get there.” Wei Wuxian smiled mysteriously.
The lunch break was not long, and Wei Wuxian took Si Zhui to a dessert shop near the school and ordered a bowl of his favorite mango sago.
"Eat something sweet, you'll feel better." Wei Wuxian handed her the spoon.
Si Zhui scooped a spoonful and put it into his mouth. The sweet taste spread on the tip of his tongue, and the haze in his heart was indeed lightened a little.
"Dad, what do you think is in that package?"
“I don’t know, and I don’t need to know.” Wei Wuxian wiped the cream from the corner of his mouth. “Those who want to harm you are like rats in the gutter, only able to do these sneaky tricks. As long as we ignore them, they can’t do anything.”
Si Zhui nodded, suddenly remembering when he was a child in the mass grave, someone secretly threw stones, and Wei Wuxian told them the same thing: "Ignore them, we live well, and that is the best way to fight back against them."
It turns out that after so many years, Daddy's principles haven't changed.
When Sizhui returned to the classroom that afternoon, he discovered that the dean had already taken the package away, saying it was being handed over to the security office. The children surrounded him, asking him questions, and he smiled and said, "Nothing, probably someone else delivered it by mistake."
He didn't want these children to know the complexity of the adult world, he just wanted them to enjoy their school life peacefully.
After school, Lan Wangji came to pick him up and saw that he was holding a small notebook full of cartoon designs.
"This is a gift from the kids," Sizhui said with a smile. "They said they were worried I'd be unhappy."
Lan Wangji looked at the crooked words "Come on, Teacher Lan" on the notebook, and the coldness in his eyes faded a little: "Get in the car."
As the car drove away from the school, Si Zhui saw the black car again. This time it was not parked at the corner of the street, but following far behind.
"They're still following." Sizhui whispered.
"Yeah." Lan Wangji's tone was very calm. "I've already called the police. They said someone was maliciously following me. They didn't dare to go too far."
Si Zhui was stunned: "Call the police?"
"Yeah." Lan Wangji looked ahead. "To deal with people like this, sometimes we don't need to do it ourselves."
Si Zhui looked at his profile as he concentrated on driving, and suddenly felt that although his father was a man of few words, he could always come up with the safest solution at the most critical moment.
When they got home, Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling were sitting in the yard eating watermelon. When they saw them come back, they immediately ran over.
"Sizhui, tomorrow is Saturday, shall we go to the amusement park?" Lan Jingyi said.
"Yeah, didn't you say you wanted to see the Ferris wheel?" Jin Ling also said.
Si Zhui looked at their expectant eyes and felt warm in his heart: "But my mission is not yet completed, and I have to go to school tomorrow."
"Ah? We're going on Saturday?" Lan Jingyi said disappointedly.
"Well, we have to do it for seven days." Si Zhui said with a smile, "After I finish my mission, we can go to the amusement park, okay?"
"Okay!" The two children nodded immediately.
During dinner, Lan Wangji received a call. After hanging up, he said to Wei Wuxian and Sizhui, "The package is empty."
“Empty?” Wei WuXian was stunned. “What the hell are they doing?”
"Probing," Lan Wangji said, "I want to see Sizhui's reaction, and also to test our limits."
Si Zhui clenched his chopsticks: "They won't let this go."
“No matter what they want to do, we will continue.” Wei Wuxian looked at him. “There are still two days left. Hold on.”
"Yeah." Si Zhui nodded vigorously.
At night, Sizhui lay in bed, listening to the wind outside the window, his heart at peace. He knew there might be trouble in the next two days, but he wasn't afraid. He wasn't alone. He had his dad and his father, his friends, and the children waiting for him to tell his stories.
These warm forces will support him through the last two days.
The next morning, Si Zhui walked out of the house with his schoolbag on his back as usual. Lan Wangji's car was already waiting at the door. He got in the car, looked at the sunlight outside the window, and a smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.
No matter how many storms there are ahead, he will keep going forward bravely, because he knows that there will always be people behind him who will hold up a clear sky for him.
