Chapter 53 Modern Version of Lan Family Rules
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji spent two full days searching for the right international school for Sizhui and Lan Jingyi. They meticulously reviewed everything from the curriculum to the campus environment and even the cafeteria menu, ultimately choosing a school that combined traditional culture with modern education.
“What do you think of this one?” Wei Wuxian pointed at the photo of the Guqin Club in the brochure. “They also have a Hanfu class. Sizhui will definitely like it.”
Lan Wangji looked at the elegant garden-style campus in the photo and nodded in approval. "The teachers are excellent, and the safety measures are also complete." He turned to look at Si Zhui beside him, "Let's go take a look?"
Si Zhui hugged Mu Yuan, his eyes sparkling: "As long as I can go to school with Jing Yi, anywhere is fine."
The three of them were about to get up and go for a field investigation when Lan Wangji's phone suddenly rang. It was Lan Xichen calling.
“Wangji, are you and Wei Ying free?” Lan Xichen’s voice remained gentle. “My uncle and I have compiled a new set of house rules and I wanted to show you.”
Wei WuXian's heart skipped a beat, and he had a bad feeling: "New house rules?"
Arriving at the Lan family mansion, they found the long living room table covered in printed documents. Lan Qiren, wearing reading glasses, was checking each page, while Lan Xichen sat beside him, making annotations with a red pen. The title at the top of the documents read: "Cloud Recesses Family Rules (Modern Edition)."
“Uncle, brother, this is…” Wei Wuxian leaned over and took a look, and was instantly petrified.
Article 1: No overnight stays (if you do not return home after 11pm, you must report it, except in special circumstances).
Article 2: No noise is allowed in public places (cinemas, libraries, etc. require silence).
Article 3: Excessive drinking is prohibited (adults should not drink more than three taels of alcohol per day, and drivers are strictly prohibited from drinking).
Article 4: Online violence is prohibited (comments on social media must comply with laws and regulations and use civilized language).
…
The last one: Do not ignore traffic rules (use zebra crossings when crossing the road, stop when the light is red and go when the light is green).
“This, this is a combination of Gusu family rules and traffic laws?” Wei Wuxian’s mouth twitched. “Even crossing the road is regulated?”
Lan Qiren adjusted his glasses, his face serious. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Modern society has its own rules, and even though we are visitors from another world, we must abide by them. This family rule preserves the Lan family's elegant and upright character while also conforming to modern laws. What's wrong with that?"
Lan Xichen explained with a smile, "My uncle said that rules are the foundation of life. These family rules are not only a constraint, but also a protection. Especially for children like Sizhui and Jingyi, they can help them adapt to modern life more quickly."
Wei Wuxian's vision darkened. He could already see himself being punished by copying the family rules for "excessive gaming" and being called in for a talk for "posting funny photos on WeChat Moments." He grabbed Lan Wangji's arm, shook it, and cried, "Lan Zhan, look at them! These aren't family rules, they're killing me!"
Lan Wangji looked at his drooping face, a hint of a smile flashing in his eyes, but he seriously picked up the family rules and looked through them: "Brother and uncle have considered everything very carefully."
"What the hell is being thorough?" Wei Wuxian was anxious, tugging at his sleeve and acting like a spoiled child. "Lan Zhan, look how well-behaved I am in modern times. I shoot on time and don't get into trouble. Can...can you give me a discount? For example, can I just break two or three out of ten?"
He leaned in very close, his warm breath brushing against Lan Wangji's neck, a hint of grievance in his nasal voice. Lan Wangji's ears flushed slightly, and he quietly distanced himself a little, but reached out to ruffle his hair: "We can discuss it."
"Really?" Wei Wuxian's eyes lit up.
"Yes." Lan Wangji looked at Lan Qiren, "Some terms can be adjusted as appropriate. For example, the alcohol limit can be relaxed depending on the occasion." He paused, then added, "But traffic rules and public order must be strictly observed."
Lan Qiren snorted and didn't object, which was considered as his consent.
Wei Wuxian finally breathed a sigh of relief. He secretly pinched Lan Wangji's palm and mouthed, "Thanks, Mr. Lan."
Lan Wangji returned his grip, a slight tingle on his fingertips. Sunlight streamed in through the carved window lattice, falling on the spread-out house rules and their clasped hands. Wei Wuxian looked at the densely packed clauses and suddenly felt that with a group like this by his side, even a few more rules wouldn't seem so daunting.
At least, when he was punished to copy, there would be someone to accompany him.
Si Zhui picked up a copy of the family rules and read carefully: "No picky eating... I can do this!"
Lan Xichen smiled and patted his head: "Good boy."
Wei Wuxian looked at this harmonious scene and sighed resignedly. Never mind. As long as he could be with Lan Wangji and Sizhui, he would accept even ten more copies of the Yazheng Collection, let alone modern family rules.
But... he secretly glanced at the family rules in Lan Wangji's hand and decided that he must follow this "Boss Lan" closely when he goes out in the future to avoid stepping on a landmine by accident.
