Chapter 87 The Sugar of Life
After Wei Wuxian recovered from his illness, Lan Wangji seemed to have received some instructions and engraved the word "take care" into his daily life.
In the morning, before Wei Wuxian woke up, warm milk and cut fruits were placed by his bed; at night, when he curled up on the sofa to read the script, Lan Wangji would always bring him a cup of honey water at just the right temperature and pull the blanket closer to him; even when he went to the set, Lan Wangji's car would appear at the finishing point on time, and the trunk would always be filled with his favorite snacks and a change of coat.
“Lan Zhan, have you been too idle lately?” Wei Wuxian bit into a strawberry and looked at Lan Wangji who was peeling an apple for him. “Isn’t the company busy?”
Lan Wangji cut the apple into small pieces and handed it to him, saying calmly, "Not busy."
Lan Jingyi, who was chewing potato chips at the side, interrupted: "Senior Wei, you don't know, Uncle Lan has postponed his work to the morning these days, and waited for you to come back home in the afternoon!"
Jin Ling nodded and said, "I went to deliver the notes to Si Zhui yesterday and saw Uncle Lan studying a recipe in the kitchen. He said it was to nourish your body."
Si Zhui also added quietly: "Father also asked me what I want to eat today."
Wei Wuxian's face flushed when he heard this, and he kicked Lan Jingyi: "Eat your chips! If you say anything more, I'll confiscate them!"
Lan Jingyi stuck out his tongue and ran off with the potato chips in his arms. Wei Wuxian turned to look at Lan Wangji, who was looking down at him, the smile in his eyes as soft as wet cotton.
“You don’t have to be like this.” Wei WuXian scratched his head. “I’m all well now.”
"Yeah." Lan Wangji responded, but while he was talking, he quietly raised the air conditioner temperature by two degrees - he remembered that Wei Wuxian always said he was cold when he was sick, and now he subconsciously wanted to make him warmer.
This subtle gesture caught Wei Wuxian's eye, and his heart felt like it had been soaked in warm water, softening completely. He suddenly leaned over and kissed Lan Wangji on the cheek, then quickly retreated, pretending to eat the apple nonchalantly: "A reward for you."
Lan Wangji's ears instantly turned red, and the hand holding the fruit knife paused. Then, the corner of his mouth raised a very shallow arc, and he continued to lower his head to cut the fruit, but there was a little more imperceptible lightness in his movements.
The audience in the barrage couldn't stop laughing:
"Ahhh, Teacher Wei has taken the initiative! I'll take this candy first as a token of my respect!"
"Boss Lan blushed! So you have come to this day!"
"Is this the sweetness of reconciliation? I'm almost choking!"
"Mr. Lan really knows how to handle Teacher Wei! This kind of long-term care is so touching!"
On the weekend, Lan Wangji took Wei Wuxian to a hot spring resort in the suburbs, saying it was a place for him to relax, but in reality, he just wanted them to be alone for a while.
The hot spring pool was shrouded in mist. Wei Wuxian leaned against a rock, squinting his eyes in comfort. Lan Wangji sat beside him and handed him a cup of hot tea. "Is the water temperature okay?"
“Yeah, just right.” Wei Wuxian took the teacup, looked at his reflection on the water, and suddenly smiled. “Lan Zhan, do you feel like you weren’t good enough to me before?”
Lan Wangji was silent for a moment, then nodded: "Yes."
“I knew it.” Wei WuXian leaned forward, his nose almost touching his cheek. “So how are you going to make it up to me?”
Lan Wangji looked into his sparkling eyes, his Adam's apple moving: "What do you want?"
"From now on, you will be responsible for washing the dishes at home."
"good."
"When I don't want to film, you have to help me turn it down."
"good."
“And…” Wei WuXian deliberately dragged out his words. Seeing his serious expression, he suddenly laughed out loud, “Just kidding! I don’t want any compensation from you. You’re fine the way you are now.”
Lan Wangji looked at him, his eyes curved with a smile, and reached out to pull him into his arms. The hot spring water flowed over their shoulders, enveloping them in warmth.
"Wei Ying." Lan Wangji's voice was particularly clear in the mist. "I'm very happy to be able to be relied on by you."
Wei Wuxian's heart skipped a beat. He buried his face in the crook of his neck and said muffledly, "I know."
Before Wei Wuxian could finish his words, Lan Wangji pressed him down, and for a moment only Wei Wuxian's intermittent voice could be heard.
It turns out this is what it feels like to be cherished by someone - no need to try to please, no need to pretend to be strong, even if you act willful and act like a spoiled child occasionally, you know there is someone behind you to support you.
On the way back, Wei Wuxian fell asleep in the passenger seat, a smile on his face. Lan Wangji watched him through the rearview mirror and suddenly realized that the so-called peaceful years were just like this: having someone who lets you let down your guard, a home where you can rest in peace, a group of noisy children around you, and the person you love who also loves you.
When the car pulled into the old house, Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling were leaning against the wall, peering out. Seeing the headlights, they immediately ran out, cheering. Sizhui followed behind, clutching Wei Wuxian's coat.
"Senior Wei! You're back!"
"Uncle Lan, what are we having for dinner tonight?"
"Daddy, it's cold outside, put on your coat."
Wei Wuxian was woken by their noise and was surrounded by children when he opened the car door. Lan Wangji walked over and naturally took the bag from his hand, then put the coat that Sizhui handed him on him.
"Are you hungry?" Lan Wangji asked.
“I’m hungry!” Wei Wuxian smiled and nodded, and was surrounded by the children as they walked into the house. “Tonight I want to eat the spicy crayfish that Wen Ning made!”
Lan Wangji looked at his back, stretched by the setting sun, the tenderness in his eyes almost overflowing. He hurried to catch up with him, walking side by side with him, their fingertips accidentally touching, and then quietly holding each other.
The evening breeze carried the aroma of food, and the children's laughter rang out like silver bells. Wei Wuxian turned his head to glance at Lan Wangji beside him, who was looking back at him. The two of them smiled at each other, and all the words were hidden in that look.
Perhaps life should be like this, without so many grand events, but with only the care hidden in the daily necessities and the sweetness melted into the ordinary days. And they will continue to walk on in such days.
