Chapter 95 Father's Approval
At dinner, the sweet and sour pork ribs Sizhui had been craving finally appeared on the table. Wei Wuxian picked up a piece and placed it in his bowl: "Try it and see if you've lost any of your flavor."
Si Zhui picked up his chopsticks and took a careful bite. The sweet and sour juice flowed on the tip of his tongue. The familiar taste made his eyes light up. "It hasn't deteriorated. It tastes even better than before!"
Wei WuXian smiled proudly: "That's right, your father's craftsmanship has kept pace with the times."
Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling also rushed to grab the ribs, muttering "Senior Wei is partial", but still pushed the plate closer to Sizhui towards him.
Si Zhui looked at the pile of ribs in the bowl, then looked at the three people chatting and laughing around him, and suddenly felt that the dietary restrictions when he was sick and the pain of the injection seemed to have become a worthwhile prelude - it was precisely because of those difficult times that the warmth at this moment seemed particularly precious.
After dinner, Lan Jingyi and Jin Ling huddled in the living room, watching cartoons, while Sizhui sat at his desk, doing his homework. The light from the desk lamp fell on him, and the sound of his pen scraping across the paper was gentle, yet it conveyed a sense of peace and tranquility.
Wei Wuxian walked in with milk and saw him doing math problems. The steps on the draft paper were clear and neat, and he was more serious than before he got sick.
“When you’re done writing, go to bed early. Don’t tire yourself out.” Wei Wuxian placed the milk on the table. “I’ve been running around all afternoon. It’s time to rest.”
Sizhui nodded: "I'm almost done. This question is a bit difficult. I want to solve it before going to sleep."
Wei Wuxian leaned over to take a look, and just as he was about to offer a hint, he saw Sizhui's eyes light up, and the tip of his pen moved rapidly, and he soon wrote out the answer.
"I've solved it!" There was a hint of joy in the boy's voice. When he looked up at Wei Wuxian, the light in his eyes was brighter than a desk lamp.
Wei WuXian smiled and ruffled his hair: "Great, you're worthy of being my son."
Si Zhui's face turned a little red. He lowered his head to pack up his homework, but the corners of his mouth couldn't help but rise.
At this moment, Lan Wangji walked in, holding a thick book. He walked over to Sizhui, his eyes falling on the open homework book, his gaze pausing on the answer to the difficult question. Without saying a word, he simply reached out and gently patted the boy's shoulder.
The tap was light, but it carried an unmistakable recognition.
Si Zhui's shoulders stiffened slightly, then relaxed, his heart feeling as if it were filled with something - he knew that Lan Wangji rarely expressed his approval with words, so such an action was already a great affirmation.
After Lan Wangji left the room, Si Zhui looked up at Wei Wuxian, his eyes showing a hint of embarrassment, yet also a hint of happiness: "Father, he..."
“He’s praising you.” Wei WuXian smiled mischievously. “Your father, though tongue-tied, is actually happier for you than anyone else.”
Si Zhui lowered his head and gently touched the place where Lan Wangji had patted him with his fingertips. It seemed as if there was still a little warmth left there, which warmed his heart.
He recalled how he had just traveled to the modern era, a timid little kid who always hid behind Wei Wuxian, afraid to even speak loudly. It was Lan Wangji who taught him to recognize modern characters, word by word, and who silently helped him up when he fell. It was also in this way, in a silent yet resolute way, that he accompanied him as he grew up.
Now he is twelve years old. He has shed his childhood timidity, learned to face his fears, and can even stand up for his friends when they need him. Hidden in his growth are his father's nagging and his father's silent protection.
"Daddy," Sizhui said suddenly, "Next week is the last week for the IV drip, and I want to go by myself."
Wei WuXian was stunned for a moment: "Go by yourself?"
"Yeah." Si Zhui nodded, his eyes serious. "I think I can do it. Besides, the hospital is not far from the school. I can go there on the way home after school. You don't need to ask for leave."
Wei Wuxian looked at the determination in his eyes and suddenly remembered that when this child first came to the modern era, he didn’t even dare to enter the automatic door, but now he dared to say that he wanted to go to the hospital by himself - it turned out that growth was never a grand moment, but like this, at some inadvertent moment, you suddenly discovered that he had quietly grown wings.
“Okay.” Wei WuXian agreed with a smile, “But remember to send us a message and we’ll pick you up when you’re done.”
Si Zhui nodded vigorously: "Yes!"
Moonlight streamed in through the cracks in the curtains, falling on the boy's serious profile. Wei Wuxian looked at him and suddenly felt that perhaps he had traveled through time and space to come here just for moments like this—to watch a child grow up in love, to watch each other slowly settle down over the years, to turn a foreign land into a home, and to turn strangers into family.
In the living room, Lan Wangji was leaning on the sofa reading a book. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Wei Wuxian walk out, closed the book, and asked, "Are you asleep?"
“Almost there. He’s packing his schoolbag.” Wei WuXian walked over and sat next to him. “He said he wants to go to the hospital on his own next week.”
Lan Wangji's fingertips paused, then he said "hmm", but a barely perceptible tenderness flashed in his eyes.
Wei WuXian smiled and bumped his shoulder. “Are you feeling proud? Our son has grown up.”
Lan Wangji said nothing, simply reaching out and holding his hand. The warmth of their palms pressed together held an unspoken understanding—yes, their child was bravely heading out into the world in his own way.
And they will stand behind him, watching him fly higher, and waiting for him to look back at any time.
