Chapter 126 The Long Night of Torment

Chapter 126 The Long Night of Torment

At three o'clock in the morning, it was so quiet in Lezhi Hall that one could hear the crackling of burning candles.

Wei Wuxian suddenly sat up in bed, his forehead covered in sweat, his lips white from biting. The aftereffects of the blood transfusion had struck him perfectly, more intense than ever before. It felt like countless ice spikes were churning through his body, the pain making his entire body tremble.

He subconsciously reached towards his side, but only felt a cold quilt.

There is no Lan Wangji.

There is no one who will immediately hold his hand when he wakes up in pain, use spiritual power to relieve his pain, and whisper "I'm here".

Tears fell without warning, hitting the quilt and leaving a small dark stain. Wei Wuxian covered his mouth, trying not to cry out loud, but the pain and longing that penetrated deep into his bones overwhelmed him like a tide.

He struggled to get out of bed, but stumbled as soon as his feet touched the ground, and he had to hold on to the edge of the bed to steady himself. The cold sweat on his body had soaked through his underwear, sticking to his skin, and he shivered with the cold.

He walked to the table and lit the candle with trembling hands. The dim candlelight flickered, illuminating the empty hall and his pale face.

pain.

It hurts so much.

He huddled in his chair, his hands clutching his abdomen, his body arched in pain. Waves of cold sweat poured out, his undershirt wetting and then drying, then rewetting again. By the end, he couldn't even tell whether the sweat was from the pain or the cold.

He thought of Lan Wangji. He remembered how he would always hold him in his arms at times like this, warming him with his body temperature and whispering in his ear in a low voice, "Be patient, it will be over soon."

But now, he is alone.

Wei Wuxian gritted his teeth and held back a single sound. He didn't want the immortal servants to hear him, and he certainly didn't want Jun Wu and Xie Lian to see him in such a state of disgrace.

He is Wei Wuxian, the one who could crawl out of the mass grave. What is this little pain?

But the tears still fell uncontrollably, mixed with cold sweat, dripping from the tip of the chin.

He misses home.

I miss the home with Lan Wangji and Si Zhui.

After an unknown amount of time, the sky finally began to turn pale. When the first rays of morning light shone through the window, Wei Wuxian was already exhausted from the pain and collapsed to the cold ground. His consciousness was hazy, and his eyelids felt as heavy as if they were filled with lead.

Before he completely lost consciousness, he seemed to hear Lan Wangji's voice again, gently calling him "Wei Ying".

He smiled and slowly closed his eyes.

When Jun Wu came to see him in the morning, he opened the door and saw this scene:

His little son curled up on the cold ground, wearing only a thin inner garment, his outer cloak fallen aside. His face was as white as paper, his lips were bluish purple, and there was still cold sweat on his forehead. It was obvious that he had lost consciousness due to the pain.

"Ah Xian!"

Jun Wu's heart felt like it was being clenched. He rushed over and carefully picked him up. He felt a chill in his hands, and his body was frighteningly light. He could clearly feel the chaotic spiritual energy within Wei Wuxian, and the chill that penetrated deep into his bones.

This child fainted because of extreme pain.

Jun Wu held him, his fingers trembling slightly. He thought of Jun Li, and how she had been like this before, taking the fatal blow to protect Wei Changze, and falling before him, cold and lifeless.

He failed to protect his sister back then, and now, he can't even protect his sister's son and can only watch him suffer.

"Useless thing..." Jun Wu cursed in a low voice, not knowing whether he was cursing himself or this damn fate.

He carefully carried Wei Wuxian back to bed, covered him with a thick brocade quilt, and summoned the imperial physician. He personally stood by the bed and watched the imperial physician give him acupuncture and feed him medicine.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng rushed over upon hearing the news, and upon seeing the scene inside the palace, they were both silent. Xie Lian looked at Jun Wu's tense face and the bloodshot eyes, and sighed inwardly. This usually dignified father had finally begun to feel genuine affection for this lost and found nephew.

"How is it?" Xie Lian asked softly.

Jun Wu shook his head, his voice hoarse, "My old illness came back, and I fainted from the pain." He paused, looking at Xie Lian, "Tell me, was I too cruel? I shouldn't have confined him."

Xie Lian walked over to him and patted his shoulder. “Daddy is doing this for his own good. He’s stubborn, and if you don’t keep an eye on him, he might do something to hurt himself.”

Jun Wu didn't say anything, just looked at the pale Wei Wuxian lying on the bed, feeling mixed emotions.

He thought that by keeping him by his side, using the best elixirs and the safest environment, he could protect him. However, he forgot that this child's heart was filled with people from another world, and not being able to see them might be more difficult for him than the physical pain.

But he couldn't let him go.

At least not now.

Wei Wuxian's body hasn't recovered yet, and going back will only lead to repeating the same mistakes.

Jun Wu took a deep breath and stood up: "You guys stay here and I'll go to the medicine store to see if there are any herbs that can completely suppress his pain."

He turned and walked out of the hall, his back a little more hunched than usual, with a hint of indescribable fatigue and guilt.

Inside the palace, Xie Lian looked at Wei Wuxian, who was still unconscious on the bed, and sighed softly, "This child has a miserable life too."

Hua Cheng held his hand, his eyes firm: "It will be fine."

Xie Lian nodded, but said nothing. He knew that the words "get better" were easier said than done.

The sunlight shone through the window lattice onto Wei Wuxian's pale face, but it could not dispel the chill that penetrated deep into his bones.

He was still sleeping, his brows tightly furrowed, as if he was still suffering in his dream.

Outside the palace, Jun Wu's figure had already disappeared at the end of the corridor, heading towards the medicine storehouse. He wanted to search for all the medicinal herbs in the Upper Heaven Palace. Even if there was only a one in ten thousand chance, he wanted to alleviate a little of the pain for his little son.

Some debts take a lifetime to make up for.

For some protection, even if you know it is difficult, you still have to do your best.
