Lin Banxia rolled her eyes at him but still started to check carefully.
With her fingertips she gently pushed aside the collar of his vest to make sure there were no new bruises on his shoulders. She then went around behind him and checked the condition of his lower back in the candlelight.
"Good performance." She finally nodded with satisfaction, "No new injuries this time."
Gu Shiqing turned around and suddenly reached out to rub the ends of her hair that had curled up in her sleep: "Thanks to the hemostatic medicine that Doctor Lin gave me last time."
Lin Banxia slapped his hand away: "Don't be so poor. Are you hungry? Sister Hou sent me some steamed buns. Let me light the candles."
She turned and went into the house, took out a half-burnt candle from the drawer, and lit it with a match.
A warm yellow halo spread across the small dining table, illuminating the steamed buns that had already gone cold on the plate.
Gu Shiqing followed in, his military pants still dripping with water, leaving several dark marks on the floor.
He was really hungry. Even though the steamed buns were cold, they were still tempting to Gu Shiqing.
He could finish a fist-sized steamed bun in just three bites. It was obvious that he was starving.
Lin Banxia didn't say anything, but just pushed the plate of pickles in front of him again.
The two ate quietly, the candlelight casting their shadows on the wall, overlapping into a blurry outline.
Occasionally the chopsticks would touch the edge of the bowl, making a slight tinkling sound.
After finishing the last steamed bun, Lin Banxia suddenly reached out and wiped the sesame seeds from the corner of his mouth with her thumb. Gu Shiqing was stunned for a moment, and subconsciously licked his lips, but happened to touch her fingertips.
The two of them froze at the same time.
The candle wick burst into a small spark.
"...Go to sleep." Lin Banxia stood up first and blew out the candle.
The rescue mission is exhausting enough, so other things have to be put on hold.
In the darkness, Gu Shiqing groped and held her hand.
They lay on the bed, one in front of the other, and the bed made a familiar creaking sound.
Lin Banxia turned over and faced away from him, but she felt his arm coming from behind and gently resting on her waist.
His chest was pressed against her back, and his heartbeat could be heard through her thin pajamas, steady and strong.
"Good night, Xia Xia." His breath brushed the back of her neck.
Lin Banxia closed her eyes and placed her hand on the back of his hand.
…
The next day when the clinic was at work, Shen Bojie took Lu Qiufang and others to hold a small welcome party to celebrate the safe return of Lin Banxia and Tan Mengyuan.
"Let's welcome the heroes!"
Warm applause.
"You must have worked hard during this period. The organization has provided mission subsidies for comrades participating in the rescue, which will be paid out together with the allowances in due course." Shen Bojie said.
Lu Qiufang lowered her voice and said, "It's still a lot of money."
"Banxia, Mengyuan, I think you can also be selected as the advanced this time."
Then everyone began to ask about what they had seen and heard in the disaster area. Tan Mengyuan was responsible for the questions and Lin Banxia occasionally added a sentence or two.
Tan Mengyuan: "Anyway, I learned a lot of professional knowledge this time. Dr. Lin will be my master from now on."
Zhou Shiyu, who was standing next to them, looked at the group of people talking and laughing, lowered her head and said nothing.
Lin Banxia was so lucky that she managed to escape unscathed...
After lunch, Zhou Shiyu was on her way back from the cafeteria when she was stopped by a man in military uniform: "Hello, comrade. I want to ask you which way is your army clinic?"
Song Chengzhi saw that the person was wearing a white coat and guessed that he was a nurse from the military clinic.
