Chapter 90 Talking in Sleep
Mu Nanzhao had a dream.
He was in a dark prison, chained to a wooden frame, his body covered in blood.
A man whose face could not be seen asked, "Have you forgotten who you really are?"
"Chen Fang? Or Mu Nanzhao?"
"explain!!!"
Suddenly someone dragged out a woman in white. The woman raised her head and revealed Gu Xixi's face.
Her eyes were empty, like a rag doll whose soul had been drained out.
Mu Nanzhao was shocked, "Let her go!"
The man whose face could not be seen clearly laughed evilly, "Admit it, Mu Nanzhao."
"Do you want to cause everyone around you to die for you?"
"Your mentor, your good friend, your confidant in the same court, your loyal subordinates, and this woman in front of you, they were all harmed by you."
The faces of many old friends appeared before my eyes like a kaleidoscope.
Mu Nanzhao looked at Gu Xixi and shouted desperately, "It's useless to threaten me with her! She is just a piece of driftwood that I temporarily found to live on! I am using her! Using her!!"
His heart suddenly beat faster and faster, and Mu Nanzhao suddenly opened his eyes.
Carved windows, bright skylight, warm yellow bed curtains, and Gu Xixi's worried eyes.
"Why are you sweating again? I'll call the military doctor in."
Mu Nanzhao's pounding heart gradually calmed down, "Wait."
Gu Xixi stopped and looked at him.
Mu Nanzhao took a breath and his expression returned to normal, "Where is this?"
Gu Xixi said, "This is a small village near the Northwest Army camp. There are many local soldiers in the army, and some of them have their families living here."
She added, "You have slept for a day and a night. This is the second day since we were rescued."
"Because women are not allowed to enter the military camp, General Meng settled us here and asked a military doctor to treat your injuries."
Mu Nanzhao frowned, "Military doctor?"
Gu Xixi knew what he was worried about and whispered, "That military doctor is someone close to the general."
"The general told him to just treat the wound, so he didn't ask anything."
Mu Nanzhao nodded. Military doctors are best at treating sword and knife injuries, and he does feel a little better now.
He thought of the dream again and lowered his eyes, his expression becoming a little duller.
"I don't need anyone to take care of me, go and take a rest."
The room was quiet for a moment.
Mu Nanzhao glanced to the side and found Gu Xixi standing there motionless, staring at him.
His tone was deliberately impatient, "Why don't you leave?"
Gu Xixi handed over a pill, "Master gave it to me, one pill a day."
Mu Nanzhao put the pill into his mouth, and Gu Xixi immediately brought him a cup of warm water.
Mu Nanzhao couldn't help but take a few more glances, always feeling that something was wrong with Gu Xixi.
He had just swallowed the pill and was still drinking water when Gu Xixi suddenly spoke slowly, "You were talking in your sleep just now."
"Puff!" Mu Nanzhao was choked and started coughing violently.
"I'm using her, using her." Gu Xixi put her hands behind her back, bent over and approached Mu Nanzhao.
"This she you are talking about, isn't it me?"
Mu Nanzhao continued to cough.
He was annoyed that he was becoming increasingly useless and even had the habit of talking in his sleep.
Gu Xixi stood up straight again and looked down at Mu Nanzhao, "I don't care what you dreamed about that made you suddenly feel guilty."
"But now you want to drive me away and distance yourself from me. Isn't it too late?"
Mu Nanzhao’s coughing finally stopped. He pressed his chest with one hand and looked at Gu Xixi with a pale face.
"What do you want to say?"
Gu Xixi smiled and said, "From you, the Meng family, General Meng, to the Northwest Army, I am already here."
"Even if you die and turn into ashes, those who want to investigate can still find me. It is no longer up to you to decide whether to implicate others or not."
Mu Nanzhao looked away and panted slightly, "You can blame me."
Gu Xixi put away her smile, her eyes darkened, "That night you said that you and I are the same, the only thing we care about most is our own lives."
"You are right."
She paused, "That's why I won't be used unilaterally by others. I never will. You don't need to worry about this for me."
Gu Xixi picked up the basin from the shelf and walked to the door. She paused and said, "Actually, you didn't say anything in your sleep just now. I was lying to you."
Mu Nanzhao was stunned. Lie?!
In fact, when she was in danger that night, Gu Xixi had already figured out that Mu Nanzhao was deliberately saying harsh words to force her to leave.
She knew he meant well, but she hated his self-righteous sacrifice.
So I deliberately made up the dream talk just now to vent my dissatisfaction.
but……
Gu Xixi splashed away the remaining water, frowned in confusion, and looked at Mu Nanzhao's reaction. Could it be that he really had such a dream?
Meng Chengping came over carrying a three-layer red lacquer lunch box. Seeing Gu Xixi standing outside in a daze, he waved and said with a smile:
"Boss Gu! Why are you standing outside in such a cold weather?"
Gu Xixi came back to her senses and said with a smile, "Come out and pour out the dirty water."
Meng Chengping strode into the room and asked, "Brother Mu, has your fever subsided?"
Gu Xixi nodded, "The fever went away at midnight yesterday. The military doctor said that if the fever can be reduced, then we are out of danger."
Meng Chengping sighed, "You've worked hard, too. You've been busy all day, giving him medicine and applying wet towels. Brother Mu was saved from danger this time thanks to you."
"And I..." Meng Chengping lowered his head and gritted his teeth, "I am so ashamed!"
Gu Xixi comforted him, "You have tried your best. No one expected to encounter so many enemies."
She noticed that Meng Chengping seemed to be walking unsteadily, and asked with concern, "Is General Meng injured too?"
Meng Chengping said, "It's just a minor injury. I went to the general this morning and received a fine of twenty military sticks."
Gu Xixi was surprised, "Twenty military sticks?"
Meng Chengping said sternly, "It was my responsibility to protect you two this time. I failed to do so and made a wrong judgment, which almost caused you to lose your lives. I deserve to be punished."
Gu Xixi remained silent. Military rules were iron laws and she couldn't say anything about it.
Mu Nanzhao had already heard the conversation outside.
When the two entered the room, he glanced at Gu Xixi first and took the initiative to say, "You're back."
Gu Xixi ignored him, walked over and put down the empty basin with a bang.
Instead, Meng Chengping responded with a smile, "Hey, I'm here to bring food to you and Boss Gu, and I have something important to tell you."
When the food box was opened, the first thing that came out was a big pot of fragrant braised lamb.
Large chunks of bone-in lamb are served with diced white radish, and the stew is rich and the meat is tender.
Meng Chengping smiled at Mu Nanzhao and said, "You can't eat this. Boss Gu and I will eat it."
The mutton soup was served, and when the next layer was opened, there were a few freshly baked crescent-shaped pot cakes and two side dishes to go with the mutton, wild leek sauce and pickled sand onions.
At the bottom layer, there is a bowl of white porridge and a small dish of dried young gourd mixed with sesame seeds.
Mu Nanzhao looked down and protested in dissatisfaction, "Isn't what you gave me too plain?"
Gu Xixi sat down at the table and said in a gloomy tone, "It's good enough to have something to eat. Aren't you afraid of bothering others?"
