Chapter 60

It was a bizarre-looking vine, with dozens of thick, long tentacles, each adorned with countless tiny suction cups. Pink gas gently dripped down. A viscous liquid gurgled from the suction cups, like disgusting sewage. Trapped in Xuan Lingzi's net of sword energy, the vine still tried to escape, but the sword energy repeatedly severed its tentacles.

Seeing this, Luo Jianqing said solemnly: "It's actually a fifth-level monster!"

Xuan Lingzi lowered his eyes to look at the monster and said coldly: "Who sent you?"

A fifth-rank demon beast, equivalent to a Jindan-stage cultivator, couldn't speak, but could transmit sound. However, it didn't respond, only struggling. Finally, it let out a terrifying roar, its ugly, slimy body swelled up, and boom! It completely exploded, filling the air with volatile gas.

Xuan Lingzi opened his right hand, and all the fan gas disappeared, no longer able to spread outward and persecute others.

After the vine monster exploded, the frantic mortals at the foot of the mountain finally calmed down. Most of them fell into a deep sleep, but only two mortals half-opened their eyes, staring feebly at the sky.

On the eastern horizon, the sun was about to rise. The sky was painted a tranquil blue-green, with a faint pale light, as if it was about to break through the confines of the night and shatter all the taboos hidden in the darkness.

Looking at this scene of dawn, the two mortals lying together slowly held hands, and before they could see the last sunrise, they closed their eyes and truly stopped breathing.

Luo Jianqing happened to see this scene when he flew down from the sky.

The man and woman looked somewhat similar, both very pretty, but their bodies were covered with wounds from being ravaged, and they were emaciated, their vitality squeezed out of them. They had long been ravaged beyond recognition, and they probably didn't even know who had harmed them when they died.

Seeing this, Luo Jianqing sighed, waved his hand, lit a fire, and burned the bodies of the two men.

Some of the other mortals woke up after an hour, while others remained unconscious for three hours. When they learned that Luo Jianqing and Xuan Lingzi had saved them, most of them simply nodded numbly and left. Only two young girls, trembling, walked over to Luo Jianqing while putting on their clothes.

The shorter girl asked, "Immortal...Immortal, have you seen Sister Yu?"

The taller girl also asked, "Fairy, have you ever seen a man and a woman who look somewhat similar?"

Luo Jianqing was slightly startled, and the image of the man and woman who had died hand in hand before even seeing the sunrise suddenly appeared before his eyes. After a moment's silence, Luo Jianqing said, "They woke up early and passed away very early."

The two girls finally smiled. They thanked Luo Jianqing and Xuan Lingzi and were about to kowtow, but Luo Jianqing stopped them. The two girls had already lost a lot of their vitality. Although they were still alive, their lifespans had been shortened. Before they left, Luo Jianqing waved his hand and passed on some spiritual energy to them, which compensated for the loss of vitality.

The little girl walked further and further away, and as she left, she heard them say, "Sister Yu and Brother Liu have been here the longest. It's great that they were rescued. If it weren't for Sister Yu, I'm afraid I would have wanted to commit suicide the first night after being insulted by that villain, and I wouldn't have lived to see the evildoer get his comeuppance today."

"Yes, Brother Liu and Sister Yu are really kind people. It's a pity that I didn't get to see them again, otherwise I would definitely thank them for taking care of me these days. If Brother Liu hadn't stolen the bad guy's medicine for me that day, I'm afraid I would have died a long time ago. Because of this incident, Brother Liu was tortured by the bad guy for three days and three nights."

"Don't say anymore, those things are in the past. When we get home, we must look for Brother Liu and Sister Yu again."

The two little girls walked farther and farther away. They did not act like zombies like the people before them, but what they said made Luo Jianqing's face slowly darken.

After a long moment, Luo Jianqing sighed heavily and said in a hoarse voice, "Master, this place is only a hundred miles away from Mount Taihua. Why... why did something like this happen? If we hadn't heard that this place still accepts money from mortals and came here out of curiosity, or if it wasn't us who came, but a cultivator of a lower level, then wouldn't this place ever be discovered, and those people would have died sooner or later?"

Xuan Lingzi silently held Luo Jianqing's hand.

Luo Jianqing said, "There were dozens of mortals just now. They and the cultivators are all human. How could they have the heart to use the monster's methods to deal with their own compatriots?"

Xuan Lingzi clenched his hands, pulled Luo Jianqing and walked away.

Luo Jianqing said: "Master!"

Xuan Lingzi sighed, turned to look at him, and said, "There has never been any true peace between the human race and the demon race. The Xuantian Continent is only this big. The demon race needs to grow, and the human race needs to grow too. Those who are not of our race must have different hearts. The demon race is extremely skilled at concealing its presence. Even if I don't observe carefully, it is difficult for me to detect it. The demon beast you just saw was probably deployed by the demon race near my Taihua Mountain a hundred years ago. I have never seen such a demon beast, but... there are many more vicious demon beasts than it."

Luo Jianqing lowered his head and asked, "Is there... no good monsters left?"

Xuan Lingzi shook his head at first, then nodded. "Yes, there are demonic beasts with pure intentions, but once on the battlefield, it becomes a matter between the two races. There are also vicious cultivators among the human race. Even among the demonic cultivators, you said that your friends have never killed anyone, but you have also seen demonic cultivators who slaughtered 100,000 people. Nothing is necessarily good or bad, but on the battlefield, there are only opponents, no friends."
