Chapter 40

Chapter 40

"Hey! Get out here, you people inside." The doorknob was being pulled repeatedly, and Lina held her breath, pressed herself against the wall, and gestured for the woman to speak.

"Get out of here! I have a gun! Get out!" the woman shouted.

"F%¥K!" came a man's angry curses from outside the door, followed by a flurry of footsteps.

The woman breathed a sigh of relief, but Lina gestured for her not to move, raised her gun, and then gently opened the door.

There was no one outside the door.

Just as the woman relaxed and walked to the door, a black gun barrel appeared from the side, pointing at her. The woman also pointed her gun at the other person, and the two faced off stiffly.

"Hey! J! Come on up, another pretty girl." The man kept moving forward, and Lina saw the muzzle of a gun appear from the doorway. She raised the pistol she had been preparing, listened to his breathing, and fired through the door.

Swift and precise, before the man could react, half his mouth had been blown open, and the woman immediately fired a shot that struck the man in the forehead.

"Damn! Mike!" The man who had just run upstairs only had time to see his companion's blown-open head and slowly falling body. He pulled out his gun and angrily fired into the room.

Lina had already grabbed the woman and jumped out of the window.

The gunfire inside stopped after a short while. Lina gestured for the woman to take cover, then climbed in through a first-floor window. She hid by the wall next to the stairs and casually grabbed a lamp and threw it towards the first-floor entrance.

The sound of hurried footsteps came from the second floor; he seemed to be hesitating whether to go downstairs.

He couldn't just rush up there, but he also wouldn't go downstairs easily; if he discovered the woman's companion, things would get even more complicated.

Lina looked at the worried woman by the window, pointed to the car across the street, and gestured for her to drive away.

The woman hesitated for a moment, then gritted her teeth and ran to the other side. Sure enough, the car wasn't locked, and she stepped on the gas and sped off.

"F#¥K!" Lina heard the angry curses coming from upstairs. The panicked man seemed to think he was the only one left in the house, and carelessly ran downstairs. Lina listened to the footsteps and stabbed him in the head with a knife.

A short while later, the woman drove back. She glanced at Lina and the corpse at her feet, and nervously swallowed.

“I want that car,” Lina said.

"Whatever." The woman clearly didn't want to get entangled; she was somewhat afraid of Lina and wished she would drive away right now.

Traveling at night wasn't a good option, but Lina didn't want to linger here. She glanced at the woman, hesitated for a moment, and then asked, "We have a campsite; you need help."

The woman hesitated, biting her lower lip. "No, no need."

“Okay,” Lina didn’t press the issue. She was already having some regrets; she couldn’t possibly judge whether these two people were good or bad.

Just as Lina was about to leave, the woman hesitated and called out to her, "Do you...do you have antibiotics?"

After saying that, she looked at Lina somewhat embarrassedly, her eyes darting away; she really had no other choice.

"No," Lina shrugged. These were scarce resources, and even the prison didn't have many left. In fact, she'd better collect some and take them back with her.

The woman gritted her teeth, as if she had made up her mind, and said, "Could you please take me somewhere first? Just drop me off and wait for me outside for a while."

Lina tilted her head in confusion, looking at the woman. Was she going to find medicine? After thinking for a moment, Lina nodded. "Okay."

“Kelly, and you?” the woman introduced herself.

"Lina," Lina said casually, glancing out the window. It was already dusk, and it would be dark soon. It seemed the man was in bad shape.

"Let's go, I think you must be in a hurry." Lina pushed aside the table, walked out the door, and got into the driver's seat.

Kelly got into the car. "Go straight, turn right, keep going, turn left," she said, without trying to get close to Lina, simply describing the route.

Lina figured out the route; she even passed by a place where she encountered hundreds of zombies.

Finally, the car stopped in front of a hospital.

Lena looked at Kelly in shock. "Are you going to your death?" She could tell that Kelly was practically non-existent in terms of fighting skills, and that gun probably didn't have many bullets left. A hospital, unless you're lucky like Rick, could lead to a very miserable death if you rashly go there.

“I had no choice,” Kelly swallowed nervously. Perhaps knowing this was a one-way trip, she became more talkative. “He saved me from that dark and hopeless abyss. I can’t just let him die like this. He’s been taking care of me the whole way, which is why his wounds keep getting worse. I… I have to do something. We’ll be in Cynthia. I’ll take him there.” Kelly took a deep breath and slowly opened the car door.

"Two hours at most, and you won't have to wait for me anymore." Kelly forced a smile and closed the car door.

Time ticked by, and Lina frowned in thought. The more she listened, the more familiar the name sounded. Kelly, Cynthia... Could it be that the man's name was Zeiss?

If it really was the two of them, then they weren't bad people. Lina hesitated for a moment, then took the knife and got out of the car.

She just needs some antibiotics and such; the prison population is going to increase, and there's going to be a flu outbreak later on. She just needs to be better prepared.

Lina rummaged through the car for a bag, slung it over her shoulder, and walked into the hospital.

For someone like her, the first step into the hospital should be the information desk, but there are no helpful medical staff to give directions now. However, there is usually a map of the entire hospital in the lobby. Kelly probably went to the emergency room or the clinical ward, where they would have some antibiotics and such, especially the emergency room.

Lina looked at the map, roughly determined the location, and headed towards the emergency room, which was on the first floor.

Sure enough, before she even got there, Lina heard the restless howls and crashing sounds of the zombies. She must be here!

Kelly desperately hid in the emergency room doctor's office. There were only two zombies inside, which she dealt with with a knife. However, the doorway was blocked by many more. She didn't have time to count how many there were before she hurriedly hid inside. Now the door was being banged on loudly, and she might die here.

After a short while, the noise at the door subsided, and Kelly heard a knock.

"Kelly? Come out."

Is that Lina?!

Kelly opened the door in shock. Lina stood there covered in blood, with piles of zombies on the floor in front of the doorway. "You..." Kelly didn't know what to say. She could have chosen not to come.

"Don't get me wrong, since we're already here, I brought some medicine with me," Lina explained. "Did you find the medicine?"

“Found it,” Kelly said, showing the two boxes of medicine in her hand.

"Is there any more?" This is too little, isn't it? Lina looked at the medicine in Kelly's hand with a sense of melancholy.

“There’s still quite a bit left, but there are a lot of walkers there, so I only took some and ran,” Kelly said.

"Where?" Lina asked, her interest piqued and anticipation growing.

"Just turn right up ahead, there's another freezer inside, and there's some liquid inside. I think the freezer is still cooling..." Kelly said, "There are about ten of them inside..."

Before Kelly could finish speaking, Lina had already charged forward with her knife. Although she had little medical experience, all she needed to do was take the medicine back to Herschel.

Who cares what kind of medicine it is, just take it.

Kelly watched Lina's retreating figure, gritted her teeth, stomped her foot, stuffed the medicine back into her pocket, and ran after her.

Just like Kelly said, there were about a dozen inside, blocking the doorway and ramming it wildly. Lina glanced at the closed door and thought it was a good habit to close the door behind her.

"What should we do?" Kelly asked, looking at the scene inside the door with some fear.

“Open the door for me, and only let one in at a time…” Lina said.

"Huh?" Kelly was a little surprised, but after thinking about it, she gritted her teeth and agreed. After all, Lina had just saved her.

Kelly frantically grabbed the doorknob, pulled open the door, and released a zombie. However, the door wouldn't close at all. She pushed hard, but the zombies inside pushed and shoved each other, and soon they all rushed out at once.

Lina wasn't surprised, after all, Kelly didn't seem to have much strength.

After killing the few zombies that rushed out, Lina pulled Kelly behind her and stabbed as she retreated. Several zombies came from behind after hearing the commotion. Kelly took care of two of them with her knife, but the fragile knife couldn't withstand the pressure and broke in the zombie's body.

However, Lina had almost finished cleaning up and grabbed Kelly as she rushed into the room where the medicine was stored.

This is clearly a stockpile of medicines for emergency use, mostly liquids, and some equipment that Lina doesn't understand.

Lina rummaged around and found a rope. She tied all the small pieces of equipment, whose purpose she didn't know, together, and then stuffed all the bottles and jars from the medicine cabinet into her backpack.

It's a pity the backpack is a bit small; she should have brought her own big backpack.

It was too late to regret it now. In the end, Lina picked and chose, packing up all the medicines that looked like anti-inflammatory drugs, and then stuffing her pockets as full of medicine as possible. Lina glanced regretfully at the remaining medicines, while Kelly stood there dumbfounded, watching Lina.

Lina grabbed the remaining medicine and kept stuffing it into Kelly's body until Kelly had nowhere else to put it.

Kelly stared in disbelief at her chest, which was now stuffed full of flattened medicine boxes. She tried to resist, but Lina was incredibly strong…

After Lina had stuffed her shoes and socks completely full, Kelly stared in disbelief as Lina dragged her out of the hospital.

Kelly didn't realize what was happening until she was sitting in the car. Suddenly, there was a loud bang on the car window, and the bloody hand of the zombie kept pounding on it. Only then did Kelly feel the reality of being alive.

Lina floored the accelerator, thump thump thump—crashing into several walkers before wildly spinning the car around and speeding away.

Startled, Kelly gripped the overhead handle tightly with both hands and huddled in the passenger seat.

Lina's car sped through the night like a wild horse.

Because Kelly gave her directions on the way here, Lina didn't drive very fast. Lina already knew the way back; she could roughly remember the route she had taken once.

so……

After the car stopped, Kelly scrambled out of the passenger seat and stood by the roadside to vomit.

Lina shrugged. "It's not that exaggerated, is it?"

"Hey, want me to come in with you?" Lina asked Kelly outside the car, tapping the steering wheel leisurely.

Kelly's mouth was full of sour saliva, and she was so disgusted that she couldn't straighten up. She waved her hand in pain.

“Hey, are you really not planning to come back with me? It’s not easy for two people to survive out there,” Lina said.

“No,” Kelly said sadly, “we will leave here. Anyway, thank you.”

Lina nodded, reminded Kelly to be careful, and then stepped on the gas and sped off again.

Kelly, still shaken, watched the departing car and quickly ran back into the house.

Lina glanced at the rearview mirror. It was getting dark, and she couldn't see much anymore. But she hoped that the two guys would survive.

It's already quite remarkable that only the two of them have survived from the beginning until now.

On the way back, many zombies were attracted by the noise of the car, and Lina, who was speeding all the way, had to slow down, otherwise it would be terrible if the car overturned.

As she drove, a familiar car approached her.

Oh wow, it's the car she drove out of Moore's private collection.
