Chapter 51
Life is a one-way street, and so is Lina's brain.
After groaning in despair, Lina ran downstairs. Moore wasn't in the house. "Honestly, all he does is run around all day," Lina said without a care in the world. With Moore gone, she couldn't leave Beth alone upstairs.
Although I'm still worried about Daryl, even though I know his biggest danger is just hanging out with Old Joe's gang, who can guarantee that nothing unexpected will happen?
A long time ago, Lina wasn't worried at all. She knew everyone's fate, and all she had to do was wait for the turning point.
However, as I spend more time with everyone, I can't control my emotions, and worry often outweighs reason.
"Really..." Lina sighed in frustration. Why could she never do everything perfectly? Despite having so many advantages, she still felt like a useless person.
The door was pushed open, and Moore walked in carrying a bag. "What are you standing there for? Come and help."
Upon seeing Lina's appearance, Moore seemed to feel an inexplicable rage, and his tone became even worse.
"Where have you been?" Lina ran over and took the things from his hands: canned goods, bandages, planks, and some medicine.
Doraemon?
Lina looked at Moore in surprise. No wonder he always collected the most supplies whenever he led a team out to search for resources.
"Will you fix it?" Moore asked.
Lina shook her head sincerely, "But I can fix dislocations."
Moore thought for a moment, "Pretty much. Let's go, I'll tell you." Moore then went upstairs.
"By the way, did you go back to check on the accident site?" Lina asked quickly. "I forgot, Daryl and Beth left the prison together. He definitely wouldn't have abandoned Beth."
“I went,” Morton paused, somewhat annoyed, realizing he might have missed Daryl again in just a short time. “He didn’t go,” Morton said.
"Are you sure?" Lina asked incredulously. "Hasn't he arrived yet? Otherwise, I'll go wait for him over there in a bit."
“Well, maybe he’s already gone, I’m not sure,” Moore said irritably, biting his lower lip almost anxiously. “The tracks there are messy, a group of people, and the weapons look a lot like Daryl’s. Maybe that was his crossbow, who knows.”
Have they already run into Old Joe?
Lina was speechless. This chaotic timeline was so messed up; things that shouldn't have been brought forward were all brought forward.
“When Beth wakes up, we’ll ask her. Maybe they’ve arranged a meeting place or something, and we can find him,” Lina said.
"Nonsense." Moore glared at Lina. He was just annoyed about missing Daryl. It wasn't like Daryl was dead. Bah, his brother wouldn't die.
"Why are you glaring at me again?" Lina asked, feeling confused.
"Go upstairs!" Moore rolled his eyes.
Lina followed him upstairs angrily, secretly clenching her fists. Once she regained her strength, she was going to smash Moore's head in!
Lina knew nothing about treatment, and Moore wasn't much better, but he was quite skilled at treating external injuries and fractures. Lina thought it must be because Moore was too annoying and had been beaten up many times since he was a child, so he became skilled through practice.
“Alright,” Moore rubbed Beth’s arm, which was strapped to a board. “Hopefully, the kid’s lucky and we don’t mess up his bones.”
At this moment, Lina felt a rare pang of regret. Would it have been better to send Beth to the hospital? At least the doctors there were more reliable than her and Moore.
But that was just a thought; she didn't want Beth to suffer there.
"You should rest for a while, I'll keep watch," Lina said to Moore.
"Are you sure?" Moore looked at Lina with some disbelief. "You're not going to run away, are you?"
"...I'm not that irresponsible." Lina looked at Moore speechlessly, then picked up a can of food and threw it at him. "Don't slander me, next time I'll throw a knife at you!"
"You think I'm afraid of you?" Moore sneered.
"Yeah, yeah, I don't know who made me throw up my leftovers." Lina grinned mischievously, revealing her little tiger teeth.
"..." Moore felt a pang of heartache. "I'll knock some sense into you one of these days." But after glancing at Lina's fist, Moore kept quiet. He didn't want to wait for this super-strong woman to recover and cause him trouble.
There's no need to add more of his shameful deeds.
Lina didn't have a watch on her, so she couldn't perceive the passage of time; all she could see was the deep darkness, which seemed to be swallowing her whole.
They were lucky; it remained quiet outside, with no sign of the zombies.
At the final stop, Lina hesitated. Beth didn't seem like someone to take the risk. Maybe she could leave Moll here with Beth, and she could go to the final stop tomorrow to meet up with the others. But then everyone would have to turn back, and they might not run into Gabriel.
Although Gabriel is a bit annoying in the early stages, he becomes very powerful in the later stages. With his full "White Eye" ability, he can snipe without even closing his eyes.
"I'm done sleeping, you go to sleep," Moore said quietly, stretching.
"I was thinking of going to see someone else tomorrow. Did you see any signs on the road?" Lina left the window, walked to the bedside, and sat on the floor.
"The final stop?" Moore raised an eyebrow. "What kind of fool would believe that sign?"
Lina fell silent. Everyone except Mor?
"Where are you going?" Moore asked.
“Yes, maybe the people who escaped will go there. In any case, I have to go and see,” Lina said.
“If she wakes up tomorrow,” Moore said, glancing at Beth on the bed, “and we need that old man Herschel.”
"So, how about I go first, and I'll bring people back to pick you up later?" Lina said hesitantly.
“No, you can’t be alone,” Moore objected. “We’ll talk about tomorrow tomorrow. Go to sleep now.” Moore didn’t want to discuss it anymore. He stood up and went to the window to look out. It was as dark as the mole on his father’s chest, and he couldn’t see any hair.
With a heavy heart, Lina drifted off to sleep, hoping that her strength would be fully restored by tomorrow.
I wonder how everyone is doing?
Will they be alright like in the story?
Where is Sofia? Where is Herschel? Where are Amy and Andrea?
*
"Run!" Andrea pulled Amy into the woods. They were running out of bullets, and the woods were full of zombies. Andrea pulled out her knife, and the two of them, with their backs pressed against each other, fought their way through.
After walking through the woods, the two stood panting by the railway tracks.
“We have to go back. There must be others who need help.” Amy leaned on her knees, looking wearily at Andrea.
"How many bullets do you have left?" Andrea asked.
“One shuttle, probably,” Amy said.
“I only have six bullets,” Andrea said. “Where’s your knife?”
“Just like you,” Amy said, both of their knives stuck in the walker’s head.
“So we should leave here and find a safe place instead of going back to die,” Andrea said, holstering his gun and looking at both sides of the railway. “Let’s go down,” Andrea said, pointing to the road.
“We can’t abandon them,” Amy looked at Andrea in disbelief. How could her sister have become so cold-blooded?
“No,” Andrea said, looking at the innocent Amy with a headache. “Listen carefully, what we need now is rest. We need to get back to our best condition. We certainly won’t be the only survivors, but we can’t help anyone right now, understand?”
"..." Amy was a little sullen. "Lina didn't get on the bus," she said, choking back tears. "I should have pulled her on the bus." She could barely stand; how could she have survived?
"..." Andrea didn't know what to say. She was silent for a moment. "Let's go. We need to find a place to rest before dark."
Amy wiped away her tears and silently followed Andrea forward.
They hadn't gone far when they faintly heard someone screaming, "Help!—"
Amy and Andrea exchanged a glance, grabbed their guns, and rushed into the woods.
“Grab my hand, Dewayne!” Sophia hugged the branch and reached out her hand to Dewayne.
Dwayne kept slipping and almost fell. The zombies below nearly grabbed his feet several times. His shoes had already fallen off earlier.
Dewayne screamed in terror, "Help!"
He tried to reach out and grab Sofia's hand, but his slipping body prevented him from letting go of the tree.
When Andrea and Amy arrived, they saw this scene. Fortunately, there weren't many walkers, and Amy and Andrea took care of them with a few shots.
"Amy!" Sophia climbed down the tree and rushed into Amy's arms.
"Are you alright? Are you alright?" Amy kissed Sophia's head and looked her over.
“It’s okay,” Sophia said. “I’m out of bullets, and I can’t find my mother. Dwayne’s father lured the walkers away, and I don’t know where he is.”
Dwayne wiped away his tears. "He'll be alright."
Andrea patted Dwayne on the shoulder reassuringly. “We have to go,” Andrea said, glancing at Dwayne’s bare feet in socks. “We need to get you a pair of shoes first.”
Dwayne nodded, his lips trembling as he pursed them.
Night fell quickly, and Amy and Andrea found some branches and started a campfire. The two children, both frightened and exhausted, fell into a deep sleep.
"You take care of them, I'll go see if I can find anything to eat," Andrea said. They hadn't found anything along the way, and if they didn't get some food and water, how could they survive?
“No, it’s already dark,” Amy said worriedly.
"Don't worry, I won't go too far. I know what I'm doing." Andrea checked her bullets; there were only three left. She put away her gun, picked up the iron pipe she had found during the day, and said, "Stay alert." After giving her instructions, Andrea disappeared into the woods.
Amy watched her leave with worry, but she was powerless to stop her. She couldn't abandon the two children, but she couldn't stop Andrea either.
The branches tapped and crackled in the flames, but Andrea was nowhere to be seen. Amy kept counting, and about an hour passed. Just as she was about to wake the two children, Andrea emerged disheveled from the woods.
“I found two dead rabbits, I don’t know who killed them,” Andrea said, shaking the rabbits in her hand. “Anyway, they weren’t bitten, just had their throats slit. I couldn’t find any shoes to wear, but I did find some tattered clothes.”
Amy was finally relieved. Besides the rabbit, she also brought back some grapes.
The two children were awakened by the delicious aroma of meat. The four hungry children shared a rabbit and grapes, saving the rest for tomorrow.
Although they had no destination in mind, the two sisters decided to walk down the railway line, hoping to meet other people along the way. However, before they met anyone, Andrea saw a sign.
The final stop.
"Shall we go?" Amy asked, looking at Andrea, who was staring intently at the sign.
“Go,” Andrea’s eyes lit up with new hope.
