Chapter 50 A Heart Illness Is Hard to Cure

Xia Wenhua's ability to control people's hearts goes without saying. She carefully observed that Pei Ying's expression was not right and gave Pei Songbai a heads-up in advance.

As expected, when Pei Cuihong suggested to Pei Songbai that she take Pei Ying to see a doctor the next day, Pei Ying refused.

She didn't even look at her own child; her gaze was empty.

"Cancer is incurable. I don't blame them, and I don't blame you either."

This is my fate. If I'm destined to wander, then I'll wander; if I'm destined to die, then I'll die. Don't worry about me.

Pei Ying had long lost the will to live and wouldn't listen to anything anyone said.

Pei Cuihong never expected that she would wait for her own brother to return, only to have her own mother refuse to accept it in the end.

"Mom, what are you saying? You're not even fifty yet, how can you say you're past your prime?"

Even the barefoot doctor didn't say it was definitely cancer. Didn't they say to go to the hospital to confirm? Maybe it isn't?

Pei Ying remained unmoved and refused to leave no matter what they said.

After saying more, she looked at Pei Cuihong and said, "Honghong, don't you want your mother anymore? I won't live much longer. I've already talked to Dashan. I'll give you some of my savings. You can take care of my funeral arrangements."

As for Pei Songbai, Pei Ying ignored him completely after crying yesterday.

Once again, Pei Songbai and Xia Wenhua were kicked out of their room by Pei Ying. They sat in the courtyard, looking at each other, completely at a loss.

After a while, Pei Cuihong also came out and sat down next to the two of them.

"Brother, sister-in-law, what do we do now?"

After today's commotion, she realized that her sister-in-law and elder brother genuinely wanted to treat Pei Ying's illness. Pei Cuihong never expected that in the end, it would be Pei Ying herself who refused.

She racked her brains but couldn't figure out why Pei Ying did this, so she could only add, "I think Mother is taking her anger out on him. Those few bastards from the Pei family, Pei Cuishan and his family, have broken Mother's heart. Mother probably thinks that none of the men in the Pei family are good!"

Pei Cuihong's words made no sense, but now, apart from this reason, there was nothing else that could explain Pei's mother's actions.

Pei Songbai gave a wry smile, unable to think of a solution for the moment.

"Wife, what do we do now?"

Yesterday, it was Xia Wenhua who first noticed that Pei Ying's idea was wrong, and now Pei Songbai subconsciously sought Xia Wenhua's help.

Xia Wenhua returned at the same time as him, so there wasn't much they could do together.

She racked her brains for a long time, but still couldn't see anything wrong from Pei Ying's expression, so she could only ask Pei Cuihong for help.

"Honghong, has your mother always been like this since I came to stay with you?"

It's impossible for Pei Yingcai to pretend to be heartbroken when they come back. It seems that her mindset was already off when she was kicked out of her home.

Pei Cuihong nodded, still somewhat angry about the matter.

"I received the news late. My mother had already been living in the thatched hut for two or three days, relying entirely on the neighbors to bring her some food."

"When I went, I tried to persuade my mother, but she wouldn't agree to come. I figured she couldn't walk anyway, so I had Dashan carry her back."

Pei Cuihong treated Pei Ying to good food and drink after she arrived. Pei Ying's injured leg had healed, but her spirits seemed to be fading away.

"I can't do anything about it. Mother is probably angry with those bastards. I'm a married girl, and I can't beat them if I go back. I can only try to ignore it and pretend it never happened."

Pei Cuihong's words were simple: she brought her own mother to Wangjia Village, and there would definitely be gossip, so her days would certainly not be easy.

Xia Wenhua patted Pei Cuihong on the shoulder: "Your brother and I both know you've had a tough time. Thanks to you, Honghong, you're a good person."

One sentence brought tears to Pei Cuihong's eyes, but she quickly wiped them away.

"Why are you saying these things, sister-in-law? That's my mother. If I really didn't care about her, would I still be a human being?"

Once Pei Cuihong had calmed down, Xia Wenhua began to ask, "Has Mother been ignoring everyone since she arrived here? Has there ever been a moment when her mood has improved even slightly?"

Everyone needs something they care about. Pei Ying was fine before, but she was heartbroken by her child and didn't want to live anymore.

She didn't commit suicide, which clearly shows she still had some attachment to this world, but it's unclear what exactly she was attached to.

Pei Cuihong recalled Pei Ying's situation at home, and after a while shook her head: "At first, when the children went in, Mother could still smile a little, but as the time she spent here increased, the smiles on her face became less and less."

I know she's waiting for her family to come and pick her up. I've gone back to look for her too, but they're adamant about not acknowledging her as their mother, and there's nothing I can do.

Having dedicated her entire life to her children, Pei Ying couldn't accept being abandoned by them in her old age.

While speaking, Pei Cuihong couldn't help but curse the three Pei brothers a few more times, but she had no idea how to arouse Pei Ying's will to live.

Xia Wenhua had no other choice but to try anything, so she let the children contact Pei Ying first.

Pei Xiangchen and Pei Xiangguang were practically raised by Pei Ying, so they were very familiar with her. When they entered, Pei Ying's face broke into a rare smile.

The adults watching from afar breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that the trick had worked.

Upon approaching and hearing what Pei Ying said, everyone lowered their heads.

"From now on, you must follow your parents closely and listen to them, okay?"

Pei Ying's voice was gentle, but the child, not understanding the somber tone, asked instead, "Where's Grandma? We want to stay with Grandma too, and listen to her!"

Pei Xiangchen and Pei Xiangguang had been away for two months, but they hadn't forgotten how good Pei Ying had been to them in the past. Now they were putting in a lot of effort to impress Pei Ying.

“Grandma…” Pei Ying’s gaze drifted away. “Grandma can’t find her way home anymore. She just wants to stay here now and won’t go with Chenchen and Guangguang anymore.”

Pei Xiangchen and Pei Xiangguang took action, but still failed.

Staying at home for one day was clearly not enough, so Pei Songbai went to town to call his new boss and postpone his return to the team. He planned to get Pei Ying's approval first, and then take her to see a doctor before leaving.

Over the next two days, everyone took turns trying to persuade Pei Ying, but the old lady was truly heartbroken this time. Even if she was perfectly fine in person, she would still be listless afterwards.

There was no way to continue like this, and Xia Wenhua was really out of ideas. In the end, she decided to stop beating around the bush and go straight to the point.

"Mom, we know you're upset. Shall we leave this sad place together?"

Songbai has just been transferred to the Guangxi Military Region, and we need to readjust. There's no one to look after the two children. Could you please help Songbai, and help me too, by coming with us?"

Xia Wenhua spoke gently, using the excuse of looking after the child to make Pei Ying realize that she was needed.

It's unclear what words touched Pei Ying, but the person who had been keeping their head down suddenly looked up and stared blankly at Xia Wenhua.

"What did you say?"
