Chapter 009 A Secluded Side Story - Half-Awake (Part 4)

The story ends here.

Yu Qingzhou resisted the urge to look at Shen Yun's expression.

The gentle piano music was surrounded by the changing dim light and shadow. His gaze swept over the grand piano in the center of the stage, the bar, and then returned to the front of his eyes from the whispering customers. In the glass bottle was a bright red rose... or a rose?

Yu Qingzhou was somewhat uncertain.

Sitting opposite him, Shen Yun crossed her hands and gave him a slight smile.

This scene feels familiar; I've seen it somewhere before.

Yu Qingzhou tried her best to suppress the strange sense of déjà vu in her heart.

"That's all," Yu Qingzhou explained dryly.

Shen Yun gave a noncommittal "hmm," then asked, "So you think the 'Shen Yun' in the story is the real culprit?"

Yu Qingzhou was somewhat bewildered upon hearing this: "Isn't it all written there?"

"The conclusion can be overturned at any time until the very last moment."

Shen Yun spoke slowly, her patient and persuasive manner resembling that of a teacher. Yu Qingzhou could almost see her standing on the podium, speaking eloquently.

Immediately, Yu Qingzhou snapped out of her reverie and cleared her throat discreetly.

"Um, teacher, please continue."

As soon as he said it, Yu Qingzhou suddenly realized what he had said, especially after meeting Shen Yun's surprised gaze. He wished he could bite his tongue off and start over.

“…Dr. Shen?” he called out awkwardly, correcting himself as he did so.

Upon hearing this, Shen Yun blinked gently, her long eyelashes falling to conceal the emotions in her eyes.

"The key issue is the motive. Raising the deceased's child might be out of guilt, but it's unacceptable not to explain the reason for the murder, since that was the beginning of everything."

Do you feel guilty...?

That's a really unpleasant word.

As if trying to suppress the inexplicable unhappiness in her heart, Yu Qingzhou picked up the wine glass and took a big gulp. The wine, with its minty fragrance, slid down her throat, cool and slightly spicy.

"Ha, who knows? Maybe even the writer didn't know what the ending would be."

Yu Qingzhou wrinkled her nose, which was feeling sore. The alcohol made her face feel hot, and a strange, comfortable dizziness surged through her mind.

“You’re right, Qingzhou,” Shen Yun affirmed.

Upon hearing this, Yu Qingzhou paused, then frowned uncertainly and asked, "What...did you say?"

"I say you're right."

"No, not that. What...what did you just call me?"

"A light boat?"

Yu Qingzhou stared intently at Shen Yun.

The surrounding scene distorted and shifted; he saw a brick fireplace, the mechanical hands of a clock above the fireplace ticking, and a man reclining on a sofa looking up from his newspaper, calling his name familiarly and softly.

(A light boat?)

—Godfather?

No, there is no godfather. The person in front of me is clearly Shen Yun, Dr. Shen...

Yu Qingzhou stood up unsteadily, feeling dizzy and nauseous.

"I'm going to the restroom."

He mumbled something under his breath as he walked away.

My pace quickened, and my vision became increasingly blurry.

Suddenly, he bumped into someone. He hurriedly bowed his head and apologized, but when he looked up, he saw the person's face... Yu Qingzhou stared in disbelief, feeling like his head was about to explode.

He couldn't help but push the man away, stumbled out the door, and plunged headlong into the cold night.

...

The door was flung open with a bang.

The child clutched his head, his terrified eyes reflecting the shadow of a man.

A large hand grabbed him by the collar and tossed him to the ground like a chick, forcing him to tilt his head back and endure the pungent smell of alcohol and the heavy smell of smoke.

"I've raised you and your daughter all these years, and this is how you... this is how you treat me? You ungrateful, despicable bastards!"

The man, his eyes bloodshot, glared fiercely at him, his warm saliva splattering on his face and making him feel nauseous.

"Trying to run away? Want to run far, far away? Fine, I'll grant your wish!"

Her arms were being pulled painfully, and Yu Qingzhou struggled to swing them, biting and kicking, until a disgusting metallic taste rose between her teeth and she felt the force restraining her loosen.

He seized the opportunity to deliver a flying kick, hitting the man squarely in the groin. A pig-like scream rang out behind him. Yu Qingzhou then delivered a few more kicks before finally getting up and staggering towards the door. Just as he was about to rush out, something golden suddenly caught his attention.

It was a thin metal chain peeking out of the coat pocket, and a gentle pull revealed a heart-shaped pendant hanging at the bottom... It was my mother's necklace, a token of love given to her by my deceased father, something she never took off.

But Mom... has been missing for two days.
