Chapter 426 Don't go, you know it hurts now.
She was testing him to see if he had seen through her disguise.
Zhao Mingyan lifted her chin with his left hand and looked at her face.
The gaze was so oppressive that Ji Qingwu lowered her eyes and bit her lower lip. Zhao Mingyan noticed the bite mark on her lip again, and his expression slowly turned cold.
He coldly uttered, "So, you've been married before."
Upon hearing this, Ji Qingwu's eyelashes trembled twice. Could it be that she really didn't recognize her? Or was she mistaken?
He even brought a strange woman into the military tent in public and ordered Li Yuzong to prepare water.
Ji Qingwu felt more bitter than eating bitter herbs, and his throat felt like it was filled with sand.
His fingers tightened, lifting her face higher, and he said meaningfully, "What are you going to do by taking off your clothes? Do I need to teach you that?"
Ji Qingwu was so angry at these words that she choked. Her eyes widened as she glared at him angrily.
Zhao Mingyan had been gripping her chin, but he loosened his grip when he saw the tears welling up in her eyes.
"I thought you were very capable, and you've become angry because of that?"
Ji Qingwu suddenly bit him on the tiger's mouth, but instead of leaving a tooth mark, it made his gums ache, and his mouth was filled with sweat mixed with the salty taste of horsehide.
After biting the person, she lowered her head and angrily bit her lip.
Caught off guard by the "attack," Zhao Mingyan withdrew his hand, raised his eyebrows, and chuckled softly.
"Stop biting, or you'll bite your lips raw."
He untied his cloak with one hand and wrapped it around her soaked coarse cloth dress.
"You think just anyone can enter my tent? Since you're unwilling to take off your wet clothes, then wear this for now."
The reason for taking off her clothes was to prevent her from catching a cold and getting sick while wearing wet clothes that had been soaked by the rain.
Ji Qingwu clutched the wolf fur trim, ripped off the cloak and threw it aside, staring at him with shining eyes.
Seeing that she didn't appreciate his efforts, Zhao Mingyan's breathing became heavy.
It's been a while since I last saw him, and his temper has gotten even worse.
"You'll be the one who suffers from the cold," he said coldly, then turned to leave.
Ji Qingwu hurriedly knelt up, her knees aching so much that her face scrunched up, but she still managed to grab his wrist bone accurately.
"Don't go."
Ji Qingwu's voice trembled slightly due to the pain in his knee.
Zhao Mingyan's forearm, which she was holding, twitched slightly, and he could feel the strength with which she gripped his wrist.
He looked down at her swollen fingers, and Ji Qingwu followed his gaze to look at her own hands.
Because of his work fighting fires and saving lives, his hands were anything but fair and clean; there was dirt and grime under his rounded fingernails, which looked quite jarring against his jade-like wrists.
But Ji Qingwu still didn't let go; she gripped it even tighter.
Zhao Mingyan's Adam's apple bobbed, and Ji Qingwu, worried that he was really going to leave, quickly spoke again.
"I want Your Majesty to hold me."
She didn't want his cloak; she wanted him by her side, to be held tightly in his arms.
Ji Qingwu rarely spoke so bluntly, and her face flushed pink.
A dark light flashed in Zhao Mingyan's eyes. He turned around and, under Ji Qingwu's longing gaze, first looked at her knees.
Then, without saying a word, he walked out of the tent.
As Ji Qingwu watched his tall figure disappear from sight, her eyes reddened, and a mix of emotions welled up inside her. She wondered why he had become so cold again.
It's nothing like what she imagined; it seems she's messed up again...
Ji Qingwu forced back the tears that were about to spill from her eyes. She looked around at the furnishings in the tent, where a map was spread out on a sandalwood table.
She stared blankly at the sheepskin map marked with circles by a vermilion pen.
Today's battle is urgent, but fortunately, Emperor Wusu's men returned unharmed, or rather, appeared before her with minor injuries.
She had no other requests.
After reflecting on her awkward behavior, Ji Qingwu encouraged herself and decided to behave well later and never argue with him again.
When will Zhao Mingyan return? Wasn't he supposed to have a meeting in the military tent in half an hour?
Ji Qingwu was muttering to himself when he turned his head slightly and caught a glimpse of someone standing at the door.
It was Emperor Wusu who had returned. It was unknown how long he had stood there or whether he had heard her mutterings.
Zhao Mingyan held a medicine box in his hand, staring at her with deep eyes, which made Ji Qingwu feel a little uneasy.
Thinking of her resolve, she immediately smiled and called out, "Your Majesty."
Zhao Mingyan's brow twitched, and he said in a cold voice, "Don't laugh, this face doesn't look good when you smile."
Ji Qingwu shut his mouth.
Why is he even angrier than when he left?
But what she said is true; her current appearance is indeed not as pleasing to the eye as her original face.
Ji Qingwu said, "How about I switch it back now?"
As she spoke, she forced herself to get down despite the pain in her knees.
Zhao Mingyan strode forward and grabbed her waist to stop her from moving.
Then, he knelt on one knee, the sound of his medicine box hitting the blue bricks making a loud noise that startled the crows on the tent roof.
Ji Qingwu was startled by the emperor's condescending gesture and blocked his hand, saying, "I can do it myself."
Zhao Mingyan grabbed her sleeve, carefully pushed her hand away, looked up at her, and his expression was sharp.
"You can? You can hurt yourself like this?"
Ji Qingwu immediately fell silent.
Zhao Mingyan took out medicine bottles and gauze from the medicine box, grabbed her ankle without saying a word, and pushed up her trouser leg.
Above her slender, strong calves were large patches of bruised and purple marks on her knees, creating a stark contrast with her fair skin.
Ji Qingwu had expected the injuries to be severe, but he hadn't anticipated them to be this serious; the wounds looked rather gruesome.
She shrank back, only to be caught by his iron-like hand.
"Don't move."
His palms were warm, but his movements were surprisingly gentle. When the powder was sprinkled on the wound, Ji Qingwu couldn't help but flinch.
"Does it hurt?" Zhao Mingyan looked up at her expression.
Ji Qingwu first shook his head, then nodded.
She whispered, "It hurts so much."
"The sand on the training ground was so hard. I was running so fast that I tripped over an arrow, fell down, and it hurt so much."
Zhao Mingyan paused, his expression softened considerably, and a hint of helplessness flashed in his eyes.
"Awu has really improved; he knows how to cry out in pain now."
Ji Qingwu's eyes flickered. Seeing that this "plea" method was effective, he continued, "I thought the bugle call for the general to return to camp meant that you had returned, which is why I was in such a hurry."
Zhao Mingyan nodded, a slight smile playing on his lips, and said, "So it was Wei Ting who came back. You went to greet him?"
Ji Qingwu said softly, "...I should have known better than to go. I even tripped and fell for nothing."
Zhao Mingyan applied the medicine with increasingly gentle movements.
Ji Qingwu secretly placed her hand on his shoulder, just in case he left.
"Later, the grain and fodder caught fire, and we went to put it out. Some people were trapped under the red-hot bluestone. The stone was so heavy that I couldn't move it, and it was so hot that it burned my fingers."
Ji Qingwu also showed him her bright red fingertips, with her right index finger being the most severely affected, and it was covered in blisters.
