Chapter 18 The Engagement with Prince Jing

Huaguang Institute.

"Is this really true?" Jiang Yanwan was restless day and night because of the red rash on her body, and several doses of medicine did not help.

Granny Lai nodded vigorously, "This servant saw with her own eyes that the old scars on Miss Qingwan's arm are almost invisible."

Jiang Yanwan was filled with intense hatred; that gift should have been given to her by the prince!

She couldn't bring herself to ask Lin Qingwan for anything, but if the rash didn't go away soon, it would be troublesome if it left scars on her body.

Granny Lai spoke up at the opportune moment, "Miss, Miss Qingwan is wary of this old servant, so it's inconvenient for this old servant to enter her room. As for those medicines... Muxue is keeping a close eye on them, otherwise this old servant would have stolen them long ago to relieve Miss's worries."

Jiang Yanwan narrowed her eyes. As expected of the old woman surnamed Lai, she was telling her that she could steal it, but it would take some effort. It all depended on whether she was worth the effort.

It's okay for servants to be cunning; what's important is that their abilities match their cunning.

Jiang Yanwan gave Xia Yan a look. Xia Yan took Granny Lai out and said a few words to her. When she returned, she reported, "Miss, Granny Lai has been trying to get her nephew into the kitchen to make money for half a year. I said that as long as she can get you the ointment as soon as possible, she can let her nephew work as a handyman in the purchasing room."

Jiang Yanwan nodded, "You've been with me for a long time, so you know what's important."

She pondered for a moment, "Stealing one is stealing, but doing something else on the side isn't out of the question."

Xia Yan's eyes flickered.

Ningsi Academy.

After seven days, Lin Qingwan had basically learned all the rules. Rong Ma praised her, saying, "Miss Qingwan is exceptionally intelligent and will surely have a bright future."

A woman's future is nothing more than marrying into a good family. The Prime Minister holds a high position. Even if there is some gossip about Lin Qingwan now, when the time is right, Lin Qingwan's appearance and demeanor alone will be enough to make some young men fall at her feet.

Rong's mother has high hopes for her.

This was the first time someone had spoken to her like that, and Lin Qingwan's nose felt a little sore. "There are still two books you gave me that I haven't finished reading. Can I keep them?"

Her love of reading is what makes Rong's mother happiest.

"Of course. This old servant has many more over there; Miss can take them and look at them if she likes."

This is much more practical than the praise just now. Lin Qingwan smiled and said, "Thank you."

She asked Muxue to bring out the medicated oil, "This medicated oil can be rubbed in the palm of your hand and warmed before being applied to the knee to relieve the pain."

Rong Ma's pupils dilated slightly. Every winter, her knees would ache, sometimes making it difficult for her to even walk. She had never mentioned it to anyone, but she hadn't expected Lin Qingwan to notice.

A warm feeling washed over Rong Ma, and she became even more certain that she hadn't misjudged her. "This servant thanks Miss."

"It's just a small token of my appreciation, you don't need to take it to heart." The biggest lesson Lin Qingwan learned from studying etiquette was that one must know how to pretend.

For example, right now she looks at me with a mixture of nostalgia and gratitude, saying, "I just want to thank you for letting me see the vastness of the world, for teaching me how to get along with others, and for teaching me how to conduct myself. I..."

This hesitant and ambiguous statement was so well done that it successfully aroused Rong Ma's pity.

When Rong Ma returned to Lan Courtyard, taking advantage of Lin Shi's good mood, she sighed, "Miss Cheng suffered and went blind back then. She had a hard life herself, so how could she calmly teach Miss Qingwan so many principles?"

"Thankfully, Miss Qingwan is back."

Lin rubbed her forehead, feeling little emotion. "I just hope she understands the principles and learns the rules, and will behave herself in the future."

After thinking for a moment, Rong Ma spoke up, "Madam, you have raised the eldest young lady well enough. Miss Qingwan has been living away from home for fifteen years. She needs more of your tolerance and love."

Lin frowned subconsciously. "If she doesn't learn respect for elders and how to be respectful of others, my tolerance and affection will be nothing but indulgence, and will become a sharp sword she uses to stab others and herself in the future."

Rong's mother's heart skipped a beat.

*

Lin Qingwan has been recuperating well these past few days, her mood is stable, and the toxins are under control. However, she has difficulty falling asleep at night and always has to read for a long time until she is tired and sleepy before going to bed.

The next day, Mu Xue asked the steward for a token, went out to buy some everyday necessities, and also went to the pharmacy. She didn't return until almost noon.

"Why the long face?" Lin Qingwan looked at her pouting lips, which were so pursed they could hang an oil bottle on them. "Who bullied you?"

Mu Xue said, "I heard many people talking about you outside, Miss."

Lin Qingwan raised an eyebrow. "Judging from your expression, it's definitely not something nice to say."

If Jiang Yanwan didn't intentionally spread the word, then it must be related to the two gifts Prince Jing bestowed upon her. Lin Qingwan didn't know about the engagement, but when Prince Jing came to the Prime Minister's residence that day, she could tell from the expression in Jiang Yanwan's eyes that Jiang Yanwan wanted to become Prince Jing's wife.

The King clearly didn't pay much attention to her.

Mu Xue stomped her foot in anger, "They're talking nonsense without knowing anything! You are the young lady of the Prime Minister's mansion!"

Lin Qingwan smiled wryly, too lazy to argue with the rumors. "Alright, hurry up and get the food from the kitchen, I'm hungry."

To be honest, the Prime Minister's residence has good meals three times a day, warm rooms, and soft bedding.

No wonder Madam Cheng was willing to suffer rather than reunite her daughter with the Jiang family.

Mu Xue thought that speaking out about those rumors would only upset Lin Qingwan, so she went to the kitchen with a belly full of anger. She happened to run into Chunyu, who was next to Jiang Yanwan. The two of them went in and out, neither of them giving way to the other.

"Are your eyes fogged up? Didn't you see I was about to leave?" Chunyu spoke first, hands on her hips, looking fierce. "You've followed some incompetent master, wasting all the years the Prime Minister's mansion has raised you."

Mu Xue wasn't intimidated either. "This door is so big, we can each go one way. You're the one who insisted on fighting me for it."

"Pah! Everyone knows who stole from whom. Don't think you can do anything just because you have something from a noble person. It's just that our young lady is being lenient and taking pity on her."

Mu Xue understood what he meant; he was jealous of the gift the prince had given to Miss Qing Wan.
