Ever since the tabby cat made Feng'er its good friend in the main house, every day as soon as it opened its eyes, it would climb over the wall of the side hall and then jump into the courtyard of the main house.
Feng'er also missed it. She would pet it a couple of times before going to school, and play with it when she came home from school. When she got tired of playing, she would give the cat a storybook. The key was that the cat loved listening to it, its ears sometimes perking up and sometimes relaxing in sync with the dramatic storyline.
Tang Yun knew that her cat was disloyal and couldn't be kept, so she stopped coming to look for him. Sometimes, he wouldn't come back until it was too late, and Tang Yun had no choice but to come over with a dark expression.
For example, right now.
When Feng'er got to the important part of his story, Lin Qingwan and the cat sat on either side of him, one putting down the melon seeds in her hand and the other putting down the dried fish in her mouth, listening attentively as Feng'er continued.
Feng'er read with great enthusiasm, her intonation and rhythm much more expressive than when she read aloud at the Imperial College.
"Wait, Your Majesty!" Feng'er cried out, "I don't want to fight you, I've taken a liking to you!"
Feng'er looked on with admiration, every pore on her body trembling. "The Demon Lord is so cool! If Daddy were as brave as him, Mother Consort might have given me a younger brother or sister by now."
Lin Qingwan choked, looking a little uncomfortable. "Why are you bringing me into this when you're reading a storybook?"
Feng'er chuckled, "Just saying what I felt."
He didn't forget to pat the cat's head, and the cat meowed in agreement, pawing at the storybook in his arms, signaling him to continue.
Lin Qingwan chuckled. This cat was also love-struck; what was so interesting about such a made-up story?
The two people and the cat continued reading their storybooks in the sun until Qiu Hong came over to call them for lunch. When she saw that Lin Qingwan and Feng'er both had red eyes, she noticed that they were both sitting there.
"Waaah, this Demon Lord is so touching. He reincarnated seven times to finally be by the side of his beloved, but he accidentally killed a righteous fairy because of his demonic energy. In order not to implicate the gods, he was willing to be killed by those people in the icy lake."
"I'm so sad."
Feng'er nestled into Lin Qingwan's arms and cried with such genuine emotion.
Lin Qingwan was also saddened, sniffing, "Alright, alright, it's all fake. The storybooks were just kidding you."
Feng'er retorted, "I'm willing to be deceived by it."
"Watching your relationship with your father progress is frustrating enough. I finally read a novel that was so enjoyable, but the author lied to me and wrote something so sad."
"If the Supreme God and the Demon Lord aren't allowed to be together, I'll go to the author's house and force him to write a happy ending."
Lin Qingwan trembled with fear for the author.
"Alright, how do you know they didn't end up together if you haven't even seen what happened next? I actually think that the Demon Lord's death this time will force the High God to confront his own feelings. Once they're together again, he'll definitely accept her instead of giving her up for the sake of righteousness."
Feng'er sobbed several times, "It seems like you know quite a bit about this."
Lin Qingwan's eye twitched, afraid that he would bring it up again, so she quickly explained, "I know the plot of storybooks."
The cat got impatient and started scratching at the storybook again.
"Okay, okay, I'll tell you, don't scratch it anymore." Feng'er's emotions came and went quickly; she wiped away her tears and threw herself back into the story.
Qiu Hong waited until the young prince's emotions had subsided before interrupting them, "Madam, Your Highness, let's eat first. We can watch it after we finish eating."
Lin Qingwan glanced at the time and realized it was indeed getting late, so she advised, "I'll read after I've eaten."
Feng'er's eyes lit up. When she read, she would ask him if she didn't know any words. Then she could show off when she wrote a letter to her father!
"good!"
Just as the two were about to enter the house, Tang Yun came in from outside, looking quite impolite, "So, did that Demon Lord actually come back to find the High God?"
"May I borrow your storybook?"
It turned out that Tang Yun had come looking for the cat, but he became engrossed in listening to Feng'er's story at the door.
Feng'er hugged the storybook tightly. "No, I haven't finished reading it yet."
"You eat now, what's wrong with me reading for a while?" Tang Yun glared at her cat. "You've been petting my cat all morning, so it's only natural that you let me read a storybook."
Lin Qingwan was also surprised by Tang Yun's request, but seeing her serious expression, she couldn't help but want to laugh.
Feng'er still refused, saying, "Your cat likes me and Mother Consort, but not you. It must be because you always have a long face and scold people all the time that it doesn't like you and that's why it keeps running out."
Lin Qingwan took a deep breath, "Your Highness, you must not be rude."
All the servants watched Tang Yun's expression with bated breath, after all, the young prince was the crown prince's precious darling.
Upon hearing this, Tang Yun's cold face suddenly brightened slightly. "Give me the storybook, or I'll lock it up and make sure you never see it again!"
“That won’t do!” Feng’er hugged the cat and the storybook to her arms, and bravely confronted Tang Yun.
Tang Yun didn't bother arguing with a child, and instead looked at Lin Qingwan.
Lin Qingwan smiled and said, "Your Highness hasn't had lunch yet, has she? Come in and have some with us."
Tang Yun raised his chin slightly, about to speak, when Lin Qingwan added, "We can discuss the story while we eat, and then finish reading the rest."
"After digesting her food, the Crown Princess can take the cat back."
Lin Qingwan understood that although Tang Yun cursed at everyone she met, she hadn't bothered her since the incident with the celadon jade cup. She used to think Tang Yun was foolish, but now she realized that Tang Yun was genuine.
This is a compromise, and Feng'er is willing to accept it.
Tang Yun's eyes were not as cold as before. Just when Lin Qingwan thought she would agree, she saw her stride forward and snatch the cat from Feng'er's arms.
Neither the child nor the cat reacted.
"Hmph, if you want to pet my cat, come to my yard this afternoon and finish telling the rest of the story."
"Otherwise, I'll lock the cat up."
After saying that, she walked away arrogantly.
Lin Qingwan was both amused and exasperated, and quickly checked Feng'er, "Did you get scratched?"
Feng'er shook her head, and after a long pause, said, "Mother, she threatened me!"
