Madam Lin felt a tightness in her chest, her eyes filled with anger and disappointment. This was the second time she had challenged her authority as a mother and the mistress of the Prime Minister's residence. Was she trying to accuse her of being unable to distinguish right from wrong?
Lin Qingwan seemed to know what she was thinking, softened her tone, but what she said almost made Lin vomit blood: "Mother respected Cheng as a benefactor, but when she learned of her passing, she did not allow Yanwan to offer condolences."
"Qingwan is so pleased that her mother raised Yanwan to be so outstanding. Madam Cheng must be happy in heaven. She longed to hear her own daughter call her 'Mother' before she died."
"Shut up!" Madam Lin closed her eyes. "You haven't taken a single word I've said to heart!"
"Do you really have to shout it so the whole world knows?"
Lin Qingwan asked in confusion, "Since Mother claims to the outside world that we are twins, why does she want me to remember the Cheng family's kindness for the rest of my life?"
"If you truly care about Madam Cheng, you should know that she sent the letter back because she wanted to reunite with her daughter."
Since Cheng is already dead, whatever Lin Qingwan says goes.
Mrs. Lin finally understood why her son had repeatedly lost his temper with her. "How dare you!"
"Mother Rong, drag her out and make her kneel down. She can only get up when she realizes she was wrong!"
Lin Qingwan's face turned pale, but she insisted on asking, "Please tell me, Mother, where did Qingwan go wrong?"
She was so stubborn, and her aura was even colder than that of Madam Lin. The servants dared not step forward for a moment. Madam Lin was so angry that she trembled and ordered her two trusted old women to take Lin Qingwan to the courtyard.
"Miss Qingwan, please forgive me."
The old woman kicked Lin Qingwan in the back of the knee, and the sound of her knee hitting the floor tile was clearly audible.
Lin Qingwan's eyes shone with an alarming intensity as she stared unblinkingly at Madam Lin. "Please, Mother, tell me clearly, where exactly did I go wrong!"
"Should I be grateful to the Cheng family for fulfilling her last wish, or should I have knelt down and apologized to Young Master Jiang when he smashed things?"
"You..." Madam Lin's head was throbbing with pain, and she was worried that the people in front would hear her, so she had no choice but to order the old woman, "Gag her."
The moment the cloth strip was stuffed into her mouth, Lin saw tears fall from Lin Qingwan's eyes. Her heart ached. How had Cheng Min endured this child's stubbornness all these years?
Lin left Lin Qingwan behind and went to the inner room to guard Jiang Yanwan.
The chill emanating from the floor tiles felt like a steel knife scraping through Lin Qingwan's body. The maids coming and going scrutinized her with various thoughts. Fortunately, the wind in the courtyard wasn't too harsh, as it wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.
Lin Qingwan's jaw clenched from the cold, and all the expectations and longings she had accumulated for her family over the past fifteen years vanished.
I won't cry anymore.
It took Jiang Yanwan two full hours to wake up.
Lin helped her out, and she was shocked to see Lin Qingwan. She immediately pleaded, "Mother, please help Qingwan up. It's cold outside."
Lin Qingwan's pupils constricted as she discovered that Lin Qingwan had wrapped the hot water bottle in a cloth she had embroidered for her birth mother!
They went through her things in the inner room!
Lin snorted coldly, "If she isn't punished once, she won't learn what she should and shouldn't say."
Jiang Yanwan looked anxious. "Qingwan didn't tell me anything. It's because I'm weak. It has nothing to do with her."
