Chapter 13 Grandpa
After dinner, Lin Changcan was about to clean up the dishes, but Zhao Xiu snatched them away.
Lin Changcan did not insist and smiled.
"Da Wu, you and your wife can live in the west house, in the side rooms on both sides of Lin Qian and Lin Shuo. There are beds in each room, so you can use them after you tidy them up." Lin Changcan said, and took Lin Wu to see the room.
Lin Changcan lived in the main room to the east of the main hall, while Lin Wu and his wife lived in the main room to the west. Lin Qian lived in the west, and Lin Shuo lived in the east.
There was only one bed in the room where Lin Qian lived, but it was quite clean, obviously someone cleaned it regularly.
"There is only a bed in this room, no furniture or anything. Tomorrow, grandpa will go to your mahjong uncle's house at the village entrance and ask him to make cabinets and tables for you." Lin Changcan said to Lin Qian and Lin Shuo.
Lin Mahjiang is the carpenter in the village. Usually, when villagers need furniture or something, they go to his house to have it custom-made.
"Thank you, Grandpa!" The brother and sister thanked Lin Changcan.
Lin Changcan patted the two of them on the head happily.
Lin Qian and Lin Shuo liked their new grandfather very much. Lin Wu and Zhao Xiu went to tidy up the room and make the bed, and the siblings followed Lin Changcan.
"Come on, grandpa will take you to feed the cows." Lin Changcan called out and went out with his hands behind his back.
There is a jujube tree to the east of Lin Changcan's house, and under the tree is a big yellow cow.
"Grandpa, shall we go herd cattle?" Lin Qian and Lin Shuo had only seen cows when they were children, so it still felt quite strange to see them now.
"Well, the grass on the east mountain is lush, so we can take the cow there and feed it." Lin Changcan said as he untied the rope that tied the cow.
The old ox seemed to know that he was being taken to dinner. He stood up and followed Lin Changcan, walking slowly.
Lin Qian and Lin Shuo hurried to catch up.
After finding a place with plenty of grass, Lin Changcan tied the cow to a tree. Then he watched Lin Qian and Lin Shuo go to the mountains to play, and he lay down under a big tree to take a nap.
"Sister, our new grandpa is so nice, I like him." Lin Shuo said.
Lin Changcan is quite similar to their grandfather, both of them are cheerful old men every day.
"Well, since he is so good to us, we should be filial to him in the future."
Lin Qian and Lin Shuo looked at each other, then went to look for mushrooms since they had nothing to do.
In the evening, Zhao Xiu cooked and the family of five ate it. After tasting the food cooked by Zhao Xiu, Lin Changcan kept praising it and said that Zhao Xiu’s cooking was really delicious.
"Dad, we are going to town tomorrow to sell the mushrooms and wild boars." Lin Wu said.
Lin Changcan nodded and said, "Okay, then feed the cows tomorrow morning, and you can go and drive them, so it will be easier for you."
"Okay, thank you, Dad."
"We're all family, no need to be so polite."
After dinner, it was already dark, so Lin Wu and Zhao Xiu went back to their rooms to sleep. Lin Shuo sneaked into Lin Qian's room, and the two of them entered the space together.
The next morning, Lin Wu drove an ox cart and took Lin Qian and Lin Shuo to the town, while Zhao Xiu stayed at home.
"Dad, this new grandpa is such a nice guy." Lin Qian said while sitting on the ox cart.
Lin Wu nodded and said, "The village chief told me that your grandfather has always wanted to adopt a son, and there are many people in the village who want to be his heir.
He was the only child in his family, and they owned three acres of land. He also knew some handicrafts, so he was quite wealthy in the village. But he never said who he would adopt, and who knew he would choose me.
Lin Shuo continued, "That must be because you are filial, Dad. You are so filial to the old lady. As Grandpa's son, you must be even more filial to him.
He wants to adopt a son, isn't it because he wants to have a better life in his later years?"
"You're right. He treats us with sincerity, so we have to return the favor. From now on, he'll be your real grandfather."
"Yeah." The brother and sister agreed.
Seeing that there was no one on the way, Lin Qian took out the other wild boar, pheasant and rabbit that were placed in the space, and the cart was almost full.
When the mushrooms were brought out again, there was almost no room for Lin Qian and Lin Shuo to sit. They could only squeeze together and sit on the wild boar carcass.
Seeing that the car full of prey was too eye-catching, Lin Qian took a rag to cover the wild boar.
Lin Wu entered the town and drove directly to the previous reception building.
"Boss, it's me. I'm here again. This time I have a half wild boar. Do you want it?" Lin Wu said to the shopkeeper as he entered the door.
The shopkeeper came out, looked at the wild boar, and said he would buy it. The one and a half wild boars plus all the prey were sold for a total of five taels of silver.
Mushrooms made a buck or two.
"Next time you catch prey, please send it back to me. I want all of them." The shopkeeper said this before leaving.
Lin Wu nodded in agreement, then took Lin Qian and Lin Shuo to Renhe Hall.
Lin Qian still has a ginseng to sell.
The shopkeeper took a look at the ginseng, said it was good, and paid twenty-four taels of silver for it.
"I made thirty taels of silver today. I'm really rich. If you want to buy something later, dad will pay for it!" Lin Wu said proudly, patting his purse.
"OK."
"Wait, wait." Suddenly, a voice came from behind the three of them.
The three of them turned around and saw the mother and son who had been in front of Renhe Hall standing behind them.
Lin Qian looked at the young man and found that his illness should have been cured. He looked much more energetic and the sores on his face had scarred, but he still looked scary.
At this moment, the young man was looking at her, with a pair of gentle and beautiful eyes flashing with tiny lights.
Lin Qian smiled at him. The boy was stunned for a moment, lowered his head embarrassedly, and hid behind his mother as if he was afraid of scaring Lin Qian.
"Little girl, thank you so much for last time. I wonder if the medicine that the old monk you mentioned is still available?" The woman asked embarrassedly while standing in front of Lin Qian.
Lin Qian shook her head: "No more, he gave me two, and I ate the other one myself."
The woman lowered her head in disappointment, then bowed to Lin Qian, and the young man behind her did the same.
"Thank you for your help that day, little girl. If it weren't for your elixir, my son would have died of illness."
Although this mother and son are in poverty, it can be seen that they are well-educated.
Lin Wu quickly helped her up and said, "Don't be polite, sister-in-law. Get up quickly. She is too small to handle your thanks."
The woman stood up and said to Lin Wu, "My last name is Zhang Yufang. If you don't mind, you can call me Sister Zhang."
Lin Wu shouted.
Lin Qian and Lin Shuo also called out "Auntie Zhang".
Zhang Yufang patted the brother and sister's heads and said with a gentle smile, "Good boy, this is my son, Wei Jing."
Wei Jing nodded to the two of them, and the brother and sister called Wei Jing "Brother".
"Sister Zhang, I think Wei Jing is almost recovered now. What are your plans for the future?"
Zhang Yufang said, "I even sold my house and land to treat Xiao Jing. Now I have nowhere to go. Let's wait and see. Thank you, now we'll take our leave."
With that, Zhang Yufang took Wei Jing and was about to leave. Wei Jing turned his head slightly to glance at Lin Qian, then followed his mother.
