After all their belongings were moved into the house, Zhang Cuihua didn't say much. She just quietly took out all the little food they had left and cooked it, thinking that she could rely on Liu Yansong's salary to keep her family from going hungry.
Seeing how generous Zhang Cuihua was, Liu Yansong and Lu Rou were even less convinced that the Liu family elders' money had been stolen, and they ate without any restraint.
So at noon that day, the four of them ate the food that the elderly couple had planned to eat for three to five days in one meal.
After lunch, the elderly couple rested for a while before getting ready to go to work.
Before leaving, while Liu Dafu went to the toilet, Zhang Cuihua reminded Liu Yansong to buy some grain at the black market when he came back from get off work.
When Liu Yansong heard her arrange for him to buy grain, he stared at her in surprise. After all, his mother had never entrusted such matters to anyone before; she always did it herself.
However, Liu Yansong thought that Zhang Cuihua was willing to let him go, and he was quite happy, since only he knew how much the grain cost.
So he quickly and readily accepted the arrangement, extending his hand to Zhang Cuihua.
At first, Zhang Cuihua thought he disagreed, but when she saw him nod, she felt relieved. However, the next second, Liu Yansong blocked her way again.
"If you ask me to buy grain, you have to give me money. It doesn't have to be much, just 10 yuan will do."
Zhang Cuihua then realized why he had reached out his hand, and was completely shocked when she heard the amount he wanted.
"What? 10 yuan?! How much grain would cost 10 yuan?"
"Oh, Mother, I have another use for that, don't I? Look, Rou'er is pregnant now, carrying your grandson in her belly."
The doctor said pregnant women get hungry easily, so I need to buy her some snacks and keep them at home so she has something to eat when she gets hungry. She was hospitalized a couple of days ago because she fainted from hunger!
Zhang Cuihua, having been through similar experiences, knew that Liu Yansong's words actually made sense, but she was still unhappy.
She survived such a hard life after having two children, didn't she? Besides, right now the family not only has no money but is also in debt.
So she straightened her face and turned her head away.
"Where would I get the money? Your dad and I haven't received our salaries yet; we won't get them until the end of the month. Don't you get your salary in the middle of the month? You can pay us first, and we'll give it to you when we get our salaries, okay?"
Liu Yansong didn't have much money left to begin with, and he always remembered what Lu Rou had said: the old couple were saving money behind their backs, so he wasn't willing to give up even a penny.
Hearing Zhang Cuihua's words now, he felt even more that Lu Rou was right; the old couple simply didn't want to spend money on him.
"Oh dear, Mother, how much is my salary? And I've already told you, Rou'er has been to the hospital several times, I simply don't have any money left."
"Hurry up and give me the money, or you two will be late for work. Stop dawdling."
As he spoke, he stretched out his hand towards Zhang Cuihua again, making it seem as if he had no intention of letting her leave if he couldn't get the money.
Zhang Cuihua nearly made him vomit blood. He clutched his chest, took several deep breaths, and then spoke in a low voice.
“Song, your parents really have no money left. Your sister is still in the hospital these days. We need to save the money at home first and can’t afford to spend it recklessly. Please understand your mother’s situation.”
Hearing Zhang Cuihua's pleading words, Liu Yansong not only didn't soften, but instead became even angrier.
"Mother! Can you please stop being so stubborn? What's the point of saving all that money at home? Can you take it with you when you die?"
"I really don't understand. Now that I've brought Rou'er back, and you're pregnant with our grandson, why are you acting like we're thieves, guarding against us instead?"
