Chapter 5: We've struck it rich!

When he was young, Old Man Lu also worked as a镖局 (bodyguard agency), traveling all over the country with the镖局, so he had some experience.

Lu Laoda panicked a little: "Why would the Nantai people come to Beiyan at this time? The border has been in chaos for so many years, are they planning to take advantage of our drought to wage war?"

Whether they can successfully reach Anzhou and settle down is another matter. Now that they've discovered the Nantai people, the Lu family members are all sighing and lamenting.

“No,” Old Man Lu pondered for a moment, then said, “They’re not from Nantai. I think I can understand what they just said.”

Between countries, there are certainly people who specialize in studying each other's languages, but it is very difficult for ordinary people to learn them.

Although Old Man Lu was well-traveled and knowledgeable, he had never understood the Nantai dialect before. But just now, he seemed to hear them saying something about being poisoned and not being able to run far.

The Lu family didn't understand, so Old Man Lu explained it again, but everyone still seemed to understand only vaguely. However, He Jiu Niang understood.

In other words, those people spoke the language of Beiyan using the accent of Nantai, and some of them were actually Beiyan people in disguise. So what was their purpose?

Could it be related to Qin Jian?

He Jiuniang suddenly remembered Qin Jian's poisoning.

Whatever their motives, it's none of the Lu family's business. All they want now is for the whole family to live together in harmony.

Finally, Old Man Lu, with a stern face, told everyone to take another detour.

"Could it be that these people were the ones who did it to the villagers?"

Lu Lao Er suddenly spoke up, saying that this place was not far from that bloody place, and it might really have been done by these beasts.

Although he didn't want to cause trouble, he still had his pride, especially since these people from other countries harbored ulterior motives.

"Won't."

He Jiuniang spoke up, "Those people seem to be on private business; they wouldn't commit such a large-scale killing spree. Besides, they don't lack food, drink, or money."

Upon hearing He Jiuniang's words, the group realized that they had just seen that the other party had horses and was now able to eat roasted meat, so they seemed to indeed disdain to deal with them, a group of refugees fleeing famine.

"Then let's hurry up and leave, we can't let them find out!"

Yu walked ahead with her mother-in-law and several of her children, urging everyone to hurry up. However, when she turned around, she saw the men in black who had been eating and drinking standing behind them, carrying gleaming long swords.

These people were assassins with a high level of awareness. They noticed the Lu family members before they even got close, and even took a step back after them.

He Jiuniang knew they had discovered it all along, but she couldn't say anything. If she said too much, it would be difficult for her to explain. So she could only pretend to be ignorant and guess along with the Lu family.

Seeing this, Old Man Lu's heart sank. Thinking of his large family, he forced a smile and said, "We're just a bunch of refugees, we don't know anything..."

The assassin on the other side made a series of incoherent sounds, but the Lu family members all understood what he was saying: Anyone who runs into us will die!

What they did was something that shouldn't be exposed, let alone being caught by this family. Even if they knew nothing, they'd still lose their lives here today.

When the children from the first and second wives saw the menacing looks of those people, they immediately burst into tears. Gou'er pursed his lips and lay silently on He Jiu Niang's back, knowing that his mother would protect him.

Seeing the men in black rushing towards them, the eldest and second eldest sons of the Lu family swallowed hard, raised the sticks they used as canes, and went to meet them. They were the pillars of the family, and even if they knew they had no chance of winning, they should still stand at the forefront.

Old Man Lu, not to be outdone, charged forward.

He Jiuniang pulled a group of women and children behind a tree, telling them to cover their heads and turn away so they wouldn't look. She took the opportunity to hide in the crowd, took out a pair of poisoned silver needles from her spatial storage, and with a flick of her wrist, stabbed them into the vital points of those people.

The silver needles were thin and short, and once they pierced the skin, they were completely embedded. As a result, those people suddenly collapsed and died, and the three men from the Lu family who were blindfolded and waving their arms around were unaware of it.

When they realized they hadn't hit anyone, they opened their eyes and saw that everyone was lying on the ground, unable to get up.

The three of them were stunned. When did they become so powerful?

"Mother, wife, it's alright, come out quickly!"

The leader shouted, and only then did the group of sobbing women and children dare to raise their heads. All three of their own were unharmed, while the other group had all fallen to the ground.

Old Lu mustered his courage and stepped forward to check, then breathed a sigh of relief: "They're all dead."

Only then did Madam Sun dare to lead the group out, first checking on her old man, and then looking at her two sons.

The second son smiled broadly: "Mom, we're all fine!"

"What... what exactly is going on?"

Qin was so flustered that she could hardly believe how easily these people could be defeated.

It's somewhat unbelievable.

"We don't know either..."

The second brother scratched his head, thinking that tonight was likely to be a bad night.

"Dad, eldest brother, second brother, they must have money and food on them. Let's search for them quickly."

He Jiuniang spoke up, stopping them from continuing the discussion, otherwise they would attract other people over.

"Yes, yes, hurry up and look for it!"

Old Man Lu led his two sons forward and found a total of over eighty taels of silver on the assassins. They also looted all the dry rations they had on them.

"Big brother, second brother, they still have horses, and there must be more supplies over there. It's like they've delivered something to our doorstep, so let's not refuse it."

He Jiuniang continued to remind them, and the eldest and second eldest brothers suddenly realized and ran in that direction.

Unbeknownst to them, He Jiuniang seemed to have become the backbone of the family.

Sun also began to re-evaluate her daughter-in-law. After dying once, this daughter-in-law seemed to have become a different person, becoming bold, meticulous, courageous, and resourceful. If it weren't for her leading the way just now, they didn't know how panicked they would have been.

Old Man Lu's limbs were still weak, so Sun helped him sit down to rest. He Jiu Niang, however, went forward and put away the longswords and small daggers of the assassins.

During the visit, I took the opportunity to check a few people and found that they all had a wolf fang tattoo on their chests.

When the family saw her tearing off someone's clothes, they all stared at her with wide eyes. She pretended not to see them, raised the sword and dagger in her hand, and said, "Keep them on the road just in case."

“Ah, yes, yes, yes!” Madam Yu nodded repeatedly. Thinking of how her husband had rushed up with a wooden stick, she stepped forward and said, “Third sister-in-law is so clever. You carry the dog, and I’ll put these things in my basket.”

She meant well, so He Jiuniang didn't refuse. She put the longsword in her basket, but kept one of the daggers for herself and gave the rest to Old Man Lu, telling him to give one to each of her eldest and second brothers later, so that they would be safe.

The eldest and second eldest sons returned quickly, leading four horses and five bundles, which indeed contained silver, dry rations, water, and even dried meat.

Old Lu sniffed it: "It's pork."

The whole family's eyes lit up.

We've struck it rich!

The Lu family was overjoyed, but dared not linger. They put all the children on horseback, and the adults led the horses as they continued on their way.

Before long, they found a sheltered clearing, and the Lu family decided to spend the night there.

The family ate the dry food and water they had just received, and the children shared some dried meat to taste, their eyes crinkling with happiness.

The surroundings were quiet. Suddenly, He Jiuniang made a "shh" gesture and said, "Someone is watching us."
