Chapter 32 Leaving the City Overnight

He Jiuniang quietly slipped out and went to find an empty room. She found a room that was completely different from the others, with more luxurious decorations. If she wasn't mistaken, this was Qian Mama's room.

There was no one in the room, so He Jiuniang wasn't in a hurry. She went to the dressing table and rummaged around, finding quite a few treasures.

There were about ten silver notes worth a hundred taels each, as well as some gold and silver jewelry, which He Jiuniang unceremoniously put into her spatial storage.

The original intention of this trip was to teach Qian Mama a lesson so that she would not dare to cause trouble for the Lu family again, but now He Jiu Niang suddenly felt that there was no need to teach her a lesson.

The greatest lesson for a greedy person is to take away all their money!

He Jiuniang smiled, left the room, and prepared to return the way she came.

Just as he stepped outside, he heard someone next door shout, "Sir, something terrible has happened! Refugees are scaling the western city wall to enter the city. The west is in chaos, and the city gate might not be able to hold up!"

He Jiuniang was startled and thought that she might as well make a bigger scene. So she quickly went to the backyard, set a fire, and then ran away.

On the way back, He Jiuniang did see that the city was in chaos, with soldiers everywhere carrying torches and patrolling to find the refugees who had sneaked in.

Upon arriving at the Lu family camp, she disregarded everything else and immediately said to Lu the eldest, "Brother, wake everyone up quickly! Some refugees are starting to cause trouble. It's dangerous here. Let's head to the north gate first; it should open earlier. Let's leave as soon as possible!"

The refugees were not just one or two people causing trouble. To make such a commotion, they must have acted in groups. They climbed over the western city wall and were likely going to open the city gate in the south. Even if the Lu family survived, their possessions and food would surely be looted.

When Lu Laoda was about to take a break, he was instantly wide awake upon hearing this. Even though He Jiuniang hadn't explained it clearly, and no one knew how she knew, she trusted him completely and went to call the men.

He Jiuniang was responsible for waking up the women, waking up the older children to follow along, and carrying or holding the younger ones. The group hurriedly headed towards the north gate.

"What's going on? How did things suddenly turn into chaos?"

Old Lu, with his messy hair, didn't forget to ask He Jiuniang about the situation as he walked forward.

"I don't know the specifics. I just went out to relieve myself and saw people climbing over the city wall and stealing things from people's homes, so I quickly came back to warn everyone."

He Jiuniang had already prepared her excuse. She always used the excuse of needing to get up at night to go out, and it would work just as well now.

For once, Mrs. Sun remained silent, but in her heart she felt that her third son's wife was truly blessed. She had managed to detect the danger in the middle of the night and led her family to escape in advance, thus saving them from another disaster.

Ganzhou City is quite large. It took a group of people an hour and a half to rush from the south of the city to the north. Other refugees have not come here yet, so it is relatively safe for the time being.

Upon seeing this, the soldiers guarding the city gate assumed that some wild beast was chasing the family and stepped forward to ask, "What are you doing running around in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?"

"Sir, something terrible has happened!"

He Jiuniang spoke first, pretending to be very scared: "Refugees have broken into the south and west of the city and caused chaos. My family originally lived in the south of the city, but seeing those people rioting, we didn't want to get involved, so we came here to rest. We will leave the city early tomorrow morning. Please, sir, have mercy and do us a favor."

As she spoke, He Jiuniang took out a small silver ingot worth five taels and stuffed it into his hand. When the soldiers saw it, they realized that a family that could casually produce so much money was not an ordinary refugee, but rather some kind of local gentry, otherwise they wouldn't have fled with so many family members.

"A riot in the south of the city? What's going on?"

The soldiers immediately became anxious; if this escalated, it would be difficult to handle.

Another soldier said, "No matter how chaotic things get, we have to wait for someone to give us instructions. We can't afford to panic."

The man then said, "In that case, you can find somewhere else to go and don't bother us!"

The soldiers guarding the city had received the benefits and had other worries, so they didn't make things difficult for them, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Some sharp-eyed people saw that He Jiuniang spent five taels of silver at once, and knew that the Lu family had really prospered. They became even more determined to follow in the footsteps of the Lu family. They were quite satisfied if the Lu family could eat meat and they could drink some meat soup.

"Everyone, let's take a rest! We're all exhausted from staying up so late!"

Old Lu exhaled a breath of stale air and plopped down on the ground.

At his age, running like this is really a test of his physical fitness!

Even worse off than him were several injured people, such as Lu Daping and Zhang Song, who still managed to hitch a ride in the Lu family's carriage. Although the jostling and bumping made their wounds ache, it was still better than having to walk.

A large group of people sat on the ground, panting heavily. They were extremely thirsty but dared not drink water. This water had been bought by Boss Lu and his men during the day and was very expensive, so they had to drink it sparingly.

They still had some water left, and since the drought in Anzhou wasn't too severe and they should be able to find water along the way, just in case, Boss Lu decided to fill all the water tanks. Everyone was extremely grateful to Boss Lu.

Just when I thought I could finally get some rest, soldiers on horseback came to report: "A riot has broken out in the south of the city. Open the city gates and let the stranded people out of the city as soon as possible!"

Upon hearing this, He Jiu Niang's eyes lit up; this was exactly the moment she had been waiting for.

"Everyone, let's pack our things and leave quickly, or it'll be a real problem if things get chaotic here."

As soon as He Jiuniang gave the order, the Lu family got ready to leave again. As soon as the city gates opened, they rushed out of the city.

But they didn't stop and headed straight for Anzhou. There was a riot in Ganzhou City, and the surrounding area was not safe, so the farther they ran, the better.

As for Fengyunlou, they were too busy taking care of themselves to cause any more trouble for the Lu family.

Ganzhou City serves as a boundary. To the south, it's filled with refugees and in complete chaos, but the situation is relatively better to the north. Only refugees with some ability can escape, and as they head north, the drought becomes less severe, and the trees along the road have regained some of their original color.

That's why it's much safer in comparison; at least you won't be the kind of person who glares at you with greedy eyes when you encounter someone on the street.

The Lu family walked all night and encountered other refugees, but they all got along peacefully.

The moment the sun rose, Lei Zi plopped down on the ground, groaning, "I can't walk anymore! I really can't walk anymore! My goodness, my legs are going to break!"

He is the eldest child in the family. He didn't get a carriage the whole way and had to walk all night with the adults. He's only started to whimper now, which is already quite good.

Youya followed closely behind, sitting on the ground and refusing to get up.

Although Lianhua had also come a long way and felt that her legs were almost not her own, she knew that she was not a child of the Lu family. It was already very difficult for the Lu family to take her in, and she did not want to cause any more trouble for the Lu family, so she did not utter a single word of complaint.
