Chapter 19: River of Elements

Ash packed some clothes, put his old wooden harmonica in his pocket, and left Duogu Village silently under the cover of Yelena.

Left through the flag at the entrance of the village.

Yelena said that the flag was a fixed-point teleportation array. As for what a teleportation array is, I will learn it systematically when I go to the wizard academy.

The fixed point on the other side of the teleportation array is at the edge of the Broken River Plain.

Ash stood below the flagpole and looked far away at the high ground where only a wooden house was left. He then let the bright silver light surround him. When he opened his eyes again, the familiar scenery at the entrance of the village had disappeared from his sight. What appeared before him was an extremely desolate and bleak natural scene:

There was no green anywhere, only bare rock layers exposed to the scorching sun, some rising from the ground to form sharp peaks, and some cracking into huge gaps to form dark and deep ravines.

Dry, hot, lifeless.

This was the first impression Ash had of this place. Even the air he breathed into his nose had a burning, dry smell.

He moved his feet, and immediately heard the sound of cracking rocks under his feet. The weathered rocks were shattered by the external force, and the broken stones rolled everywhere.

There was hot wind blowing from a distance, also dry, as if it would take away the moisture on his face. Ash licked his lips. After standing here for a while, his lips became dry and flaky.

"Don't look at it like this now." Yelena crossed her arms and said beside him, "At least you can still stand here intact now. If you were standing here a month ago, I guarantee that not even a bone residue would be found."

Ash tilted his head to look at her, "The River of Elements?"

"Oh, you know a lot?" Yelena raised her eyebrows happily. "You can call it the River of Elements, but I prefer to call it the Elemental Tide, Elemental Storm, or Elemental Scourge. It sounds more impressive, doesn't it?"

She signaled Ash to follow her with her eyes, and while leading the way, she casually said, "In Iluv, the elements are abundant and balanced, so there are wizards and magic."

"At the junction of Iluf and Broken River Plain, this place, the elements were once tens of thousands times more abundant than Iluf, but it was chaotic and disorderly, and no one could get close to it. We used to call this area the River of Elements, but now that the river is gone, we call it the Cradle of Death."

"And in your Broken River Plain, there were no elements for a long time, as if they were all absorbed by the River of Elements. Until recently, the River of Elements gradually dried up, and the element density in the Broken River Plain gradually increased, with a trend of being on par with Iluf."

"After being ravaged by violent elemental disasters for several epochs, this place has become a dead land." Yelena shook her head. "I'm afraid it won't be able to recover in a few thousand years."

As she spoke, she glanced at Ash and said, "I heard from that drunk uncle that even if I hadn't done this, you would have found a way to leave?"

Without waiting for Ash to answer, she raised her chin and said, "Take another good look at this place. This dangerous environment is far more than what you see. Even if we travel day and night without any obstacles, it will take us half a year to walk."

"But how could there be no obstacles?" She enumerated. "High temperature, lack of water, scarcity of food, and occasional residual tails of elemental storms. There is no smooth road, and the direction of progress is either blocked by mountains or blocked by deep valleys... How can you people of Broken River Plain leave on your own?"

She spoke very bluntly: "Many wizards outside are saying that it is the River of Elements that protects you, otherwise the Broken River Plain would have become their backyard long ago. But do you really think the River of Elements is protecting you? Before it disappeared, it prevented you from contacting magic, cut off your way to touch the rules of the world and strengthen yourself. After it disappeared, it left behind a natural chasm that is difficult for ordinary people to cross, trapping you firmly in it and letting others slaughter you. Even the constitution of your 'magic material' that brought disaster to you is probably because of the River of Elements, right?"

Why are you telling me this? Ash blinked in confusion, feeling that Yelena's attitude towards him was a little strange once he left the village.

Seems like you're trying to send out friendly signals?

The appearance of knowing everything and saying it all.

In order to test whether this was the case, he chose the most confusing question: "Can you tell me, what is magic material?"

Yelena shrugged and answered him without hesitation: "The people of Iluf divide all races into two categories. One is humans, and the rest are all magical materials, such as elves, vampires, orcs, undead, demons, monsters... these are the most common."

"Magic materials do not require study or meditation. They are born with their own abilities. They are racial talents and bloodline power. Every part of the flesh and blood contains a certain law of nature. Therefore, they can be used as spellcasting materials and potion primers." Yelena said, "But humans can't do that. We are born ignorant. Only through continuous learning can we master the rules and possess power."

"This is the first time in history that you are both human and made of magic."

"Our flesh and blood also contain the laws of nature?" Ash was puzzled, "But we don't have any innate abilities..." He paused for a moment, because he suddenly thought of himself. He has a keen sense of perception, is this considered a natural ability?

"You don't have any innate abilities." Yelena's assertion stopped Ash from thinking, "After all, you are still human."

It's human, but also magical material.

Meaning, it is coveted like magical materials, but like a human being, it is born ignorant and has no special powers.

"Come to think of it, you are really unlucky." Yelena sighed sympathetically.

Ash blinked and didn't reply.

He wondered, was it really all bad luck?

According to Yelena, the way wizards increase their power is through learning and constantly mastering the laws of nature. But the people of Broken River Plains are born with certain laws in their bodies.

So will they learn better and faster than the wizards?

Just like picking fruits from a tree, wizards need to climb up the tree to pick them, but they only need to spread out their hands and the fruits will be in their palms.

The old people in the village often say that there is no such thing as absolute badness.

Ash was convinced of this.

"Okay, we're almost there." Yelena raised her hand and pointed to the distance. It was a huge black flag with a pale, dry hand with five fingers spread wide. At first glance, the hand seemed to break through the restraint of the flag and grab at the human soul, which made people feel cold.

"Here, this is the teleportation point of the Pale Throne." Yelena quickened her pace, "We will use their teleportation point to go back."

"The Pale Throne?"

"We can also go from our Radiant Throne, but - well, for various reasons, let's take a detour!" Yelena didn't know what she was thinking of, and she was flustered and guilty for a moment. She subconsciously explained things that didn't need to be explained in detail to Ash, "Don't worry, I borrowed the pass from the Pale Throne in advance, so I can use their teleportation array."

Ash: “…” Does it feel like Yelena is deliberately avoiding someone?

He didn't ask, but followed Yelena to the banner of the Pale Throne.

"Are you ready?" Yelena raised her red lips, "For the strange and magical world you are about to enter?"

Ash touched the wooden harmonica in his pocket and nodded without hesitation.

The flag burst into a dark light, covering the two people. After a few seconds, the two people were no longer there.

Only a dry, spicy wind blew, making the flags rustle violently.

At this time, Duogu Village——

"What? She took the boy away?!" Ivan looked at Fann in shock, "How long has she been gone?!"

Fan En was also shocked: "Isn't that girl from the Brilliant Throne?!"

Ivan rubbed his aching stomach and waved his hand dryly: "No, she is not. She is from the Brilliant Throne and is also my sister... Well, it's nothing, don't worry, she has no ill intentions and will not do anything to that boy... I will send him back to you as soon as possible!"

After hearing what he said, Fan En calmed down a little. He thought expressionlessly, Oh, I'm afraid that kid won't agree to come back with you by then.
