Chapter 35 Digging Kudzu Roots

Knowing that the rabbit meat today came from the third brother's wife/third aunt, everyone felt somewhat grateful to her.

The children remembered the good but not the bad. After eating meat with their third aunt a few times, everyone's opinion of her changed, and they addressed her with more affection.

If children remember good people this way, how much more so adults?

They've finally become a family again.

After they had eaten and drunk their fill, Old Zhou asked her husband how the work in the fields was going.

"The medicinal herb fields are all ready. The herbs are growing well lately, and almost none of them have died."

Grandpa Wu said proudly, "I thought growing medicinal herbs would be difficult, but I didn't expect it to be just like crops. As long as you take good care of them, they will grow well."

"That's good. Third brother's wife, you should also talk to your father about that thing you told your mother about, how to dig up this valuable stuff."

Hearing this, Old Zhou felt a little relieved and quickly gestured to her third son's wife to tell her about digging up the valuable stuff.

Upon hearing that it was a valuable item, everyone turned to look at Chiang Kai-shek.

Based on the other party's repeated changes, they were all willing to believe Chiang Kai-shek!

"Here's the thing, today I took Cao'er to the back mountain to dig for wild vegetables, and a lot of women from the village came along too. The area is only so big, so I went a little further in and found some wild vegetables like wood ear mushrooms. Also, right where that silly rabbit ran into the ground and died, I found a lot of kudzu vines..."

Jiang Yue felt a dark line appear on the back of her head as so many eyes stared at her.

Since things had come to this, she had no choice but to continue making up stories to deceive people.

"This thing looks like a tree root. When digging it, you need to dig along the root. It's okay if it breaks. Let's dig up as much as we can first. After we get it home, we can process and prepare it."

Jiang Yue was unsure whether Huichuntang would accept it, but kudzu root powder does have medicinal effects, including clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting body fluid production and quenching thirst, and tonifying the kidneys and spleen. It can also relieve muscle tension and fever, and promote body fluid production and stop coughing.

In addition to these benefits, kudzu root powder can also be used to sober up. When mixed with water, it forms a colloid and, when consumed, can regulate endocrine function, improve skin health, prevent cancer, and protect the heart.

At worst, she can exchange points for points in the system space!

"Hey, let's not delay. This afternoon, Da Lang, you take Da Shi, Da Niu, and Er Gou to dig up kudzu roots. Er Lang, Xiao Shi Tou, and I will go to work in the fields. We'll come help you when we're done."

Old Master Wu understood the situation and made a decision without hesitation.

No one else objected, and the decision was made amicably.

Old ginger is spicier, and remembering his third son's wife mentioning that many people had followed her to dig for wild vegetables that morning, Old Master Wu reminded her:

“Third son’s wife, you go and give directions. If anyone asks what you’re doing, just say you’re carrying the main beam and cutting wood for your family to make beds, tables, chairs and benches.”

"Hey, that's a good idea, let's listen to Dad."

Jiang Yue gave a thumbs up, praising her father-in-law without reservation.

Seeing this, the eldest Zhou and the youngest Zhou offered to help, saying that their mother-in-law would take care of the household while they did their part.

Carrying pole, bamboo basket, rope, cart, shovel, saw, axe, and drinking water, water bottle and water bag.

I brought everything that I could possibly need.

This display quickly attracted the attention of many people.

Sure enough, someone caught up with him and asked:

"Big brother, what are you all doing here in such a large group?"

“My third brother and sister-in-law are building a house, but they still don’t have the main beams, tables, chairs, cabinets, or beds. So I went to the mountains to cut timber today when I had some free time.”

Wu Dalang spoke frankly, and after explaining, he tentatively asked:

"Cuihua's dad, are you busy this afternoon? If not, come help us saw wood in the mountains."

"No, no, I have things to do in the fields this afternoon."

Upon hearing that it was sawing wood and doing hard labor, the man shook his head vigorously and ran away in a flash.

After hearing the conversation between the two, the other villagers dispersed in a huff.

Chopping wood is so tiring; it's much more comfortable to lie in your own yard and take a nap!

And so, no one followed them anymore, for fear of being pulled into the work.

Jiang Yue walked behind, holding her daughter's hand, with a little puppy running alongside them...

Well, animals are more alert than humans. Even though Little White is small, it's still somewhat useful.

The little girl followed her mother, occasionally stealing a glance at her third aunt.

I thought to myself, "Third Auntie treats Little Sister Grass so gently!"

And then there's little Grassie. She saw her mother make new clothes for her third aunt, and she really wants new clothes too!

The empty cart was quickly pushed up the mountain.

As Jiang Yueyue led the way, Wu Dalang and the others, who had never been to such a remote place before, became increasingly terrified.

My third sister-in-law is truly fearless!

That's incredibly audacious!

He actually ventured into such a deep forest all by himself!

"Alright, we've arrived."

Jiang Yue stood under the marked tree branch, then pointed to a spot and said:

"Brother, you take the children and start digging from here. No matter how thick the rootstock is, don't panic, just dig it up."

"Okay, third sister-in-law, take your sisters-in-law and Niu'er and don't go too far. It's too deep here, be careful of danger."

Wu Dalang nodded and gave a word of advice.

Then he parked the cart under the shade of a tree, took out hoes, shovels, and other tools, and distributed them to his sons and nephews...

While the men were digging, Jiang Yue, along with her two sisters-in-law, niece, and Cao'er, searched for wild vegetables and fruits in the vicinity.

Unfortunately, she arrived in a hurry and forgot to wear a straw hat and veil; otherwise, those beehives on her head would have been hers for the taking!

The eldest Zhou and the youngest Zhou picked up long sticks and branches and began to beat the surrounding grass.

Fortunately, there were no worms, so I felt safe to squat down and dig for wild vegetables.

As they dug, they also discovered some wild ginger, wild onions, edible mushrooms, and thorn berries...

Jiang Yue was ashamed; she really didn't recognize all of these things and had to rely on her older sisters-in-law, who were experienced in the ways of the world, to help her!

Suddenly, Xiao Zhou discovered a large, fresh animal dropping. This frightened them, and they dared not go any further. They quickly retreated to the cart.

It's safer in places with more men!

While they were digging for wild vegetables, Wu Dalang and the others were not idle either.

There were many dug-out roots piled up in the pit. Jiang Yue pulled one out, peeled off some dirt, pinched off a little bit of the outer skin, and white sap quickly oozed out.

Tsk tsk, this kudzu root has a good amount of moisture!

After putting down their baskets of wild vegetables, the eldest and youngest Zhou women gathered around.

However, they had never seen such clods of earth before. They were neither sweet potatoes nor yams. Could this really be sold for money?

"Sister-in-law, let's move these kudzu roots onto the cart first."

Jiang Yue suggested that it's not good to rely solely on the men to do the work; the women are just sitting around doing nothing.

"Okay, sure."

The eldest and youngest wives of the Zhou family had no objections; they could move these things themselves, and it would save the men some effort. They were happy to help, even to the point of...
