Chapter 30: Want to retaliate?
When Mu Yan woke up, his brother was by his side.
He seemed to have slept for a long time.
Although he seemed quite comfortable, for some reason, Mu Yan felt inexplicably uneasy, like waking up in a high school math exam room, having slept soundly but then realizing there were only twenty minutes left before the exam was over.
There's a bloody taste in my throat, it's very uncomfortable.
"Would you like some water?" Lin Yi promptly poured him some hot water and handed it to him.
Mu Yan took a sip of water and asked her brother, "Where's Mom?"
"They've been sent back to their ward."
Mu Yan felt a little relieved, but he quickly remembered that he had sent a message this morning asking Shang Qiyue if he wanted to come over for dinner while he went to buy groceries.
Hopefully it's not too late yet.
He felt a little flustered. Shang Qiyue didn't seem like an unreasonable person, but he stood him up the first time he invited him to dinner. If he were Shang Qiyue, he would also think that this person was almost completely untrustworthy.
Mu Yan silently thought of words of apology in his heart, praying that he could still go to buy groceries in time. He reached his hand to the headboard, wanting to find his phone, but it wasn't there. He checked his pockets, but it wasn't there either.
"It's here with me." Lin Yi handed him the phone.
Mu Yan checked the time, then glanced at his chat box with Shang Qiyue, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, he was probably busy and didn't reply, so he probably won't be coming.
"It's four o'clock, brother," Mu Yan asked casually, "Why aren't you going back to cook for Jiajia...?"
Lin Yi reached out to slap his arm, but Mu Yan dodged it with lightning speed.
"Are you sick? Do you think Xiang Zhuo will starve to death at home? How am I supposed to walk with you injured like this? I can't stop you even if I try to pull you. You're trying to be a hero. Mu Yan, I really want to beat you up."
“If it were someone else, I definitely wouldn’t care. But that’s Director Zhang after all,” Mu Yan said, her voice trailing off as she realized she was in the wrong, “Director Zhang has helped our family a lot. And I beat him up…”
When it comes to fighting, height and weight are secondary. A 1.8-meter-tall, 200-pound fat man might not be able to withstand a punch from a skinny thug.
Mu Yan attended the best high school in the county. Back then, the county was unsafe, and thugs often extorted protection money on the way home from school. Mu Yan wasn't good at fighting, but he knew those guys well. He figured that if he showed them his fearless side, they wouldn't have to fight a second time.
Fighting is nothing more than a contest of who is less likely to show fear. When that man boasted about how powerful his father was as a senator, and then deliberately made things difficult for that omega doctor, he actually revealed his fear.
“Mu Yan, Mom is right here, and you just rushed up there like that. If it weren’t for Mom and me, you would be a real worry for everyone. Can’t you take better care of yourself? Mom’s eyes are all swollen from crying today. You know she believes in all sorts of nonsense every day. She just kept nagging me about how she’s dragging you down.”
"Can't you just give me a break? If you don't rush in, who's going to blame you? When you're out in the world, you have to be a little selfish. You're not the kind of alpha who can take on ten people at once..."
Mu Yan actually wanted to say that he rarely did such things, but he felt that his brother seemed very angry, so he could only lower his head and obediently accept the scolding.
After Lin Yi finished cursing, Mu Yan sat up in bed and said, "I feel much better, brother. Let's go back early."
"Wait a minute." Lin Yi held his coat and handed it to Mu Yan so he could put it on first. "Your boss just came by and said he'll take you home in a bit."
Mu Yan paused briefly: "Ah, my boss?"
"Yes, he just called, and I answered. I told him you were injured and to call back later. He then asked where I was and said he would come to see me."
Sister Zhou? Mu Yan was a little confused. Sister Zhou didn't seem like the type to get involved in this kind of thing.
"Where has she gone now...?"
"After the security guards came over, someone called the police. The police came over, and he went over to talk to them. The police seemed to respect him. Don't worry, they started it, and there's CCTV footage. You'll be fine."
Mu Yan was even more confused. How could Sister Zhou know someone from the police station? She was quite introverted and didn't like socializing. Outside of work, Mu Yan hardly interacted with her.
Just as Mu Yan was wondering, someone pushed the door open and walked in.
The door opened, bringing with it a biting gust of cold wind. The man was very tall; Mu Yan, sitting on the bed, had to tilt her head up slightly to see his sharply defined features.
"President Shang," Mu Yan called out to him instinctively.
"Awake?" Shang Qiyue asked casually.
Mu Yan nodded, feeling somewhat uncomfortable.
Just like he said, why do I always look so pathetic every time I see Shang Qiyue?
Lin Yi also thanked Shang Qiyue: "Thank you so much for your help today. You've always taken good care of Xiaoyan at work. If you don't mind, let us treat you to a meal."
"No need, the company asked me to come. It's my job to care for the employees. I'm glad Mu Yan is feeling better." Shang Qiyue smiled gently at Lin Yi, but when he looked at Mu Yan, his smile became somewhat teasing.
Lin Yi felt that this CEO Shang was different from all the alphas he had known before. He was well-dressed, and the police officers treated him with great respect. He didn't seem like an ordinary person. However, he spoke politely and was not arrogant at all. He was very gentle with Xiao Yan and even controlled his pheromones very well.
Moreover, he looked quite familiar, even somewhat familiar, but Lin Yi was certain that he wouldn't know someone of this level.
It should just be a matter of being kind on the surface.
If Xiaoyan's boyfriend were like him, her mother might not necessarily dislike an alpha as Xiaoyan's partner. Lin Yi thought.
But he was quickly startled by his own thoughts. Yan Yan and Lu Chong hadn't broken up yet, how could he think like that?
Even if Lu Chong has his flaws, he's still Yan Yan's boyfriend. As long as they don't get to the point of marriage, it's all Yan Yan's business, and it's none of his place to interfere.
Mu Yan had no idea what her brother was thinking, but she felt that Shang Qiyue's gaze was a bit piercing, so she lowered her head awkwardly.
The actual relationship between him and Shang Qiyue was only separated by a thin veil from his superior-subordinate relationship. With just a slight tug from Shang Qiyue, the sordid relationship could be exposed to his brother.
Shang Qiyue's gaze was burning hot on him, as if his cheap sweater was about to be burned through.
"The one who assaulted him is the youngest son of a councilor in City A," Shang Qiyue said. "He's already been taken away by the police, and in a few days someone will invite his father for tea. The son of a mere councilor is really lawless. This time, they'll be in jail, and I won't let them out until they're both severely injured."
His tone was calm, as if he had just delivered an orange to someone rather than taken them to the police station.
Mu Yan was moved and grateful.
But he was also a little scared.
A person can easily crush an ant. The ant will instinctively be afraid of that person, even if that person is kind, even if he has just killed a spider several times its size.
He had no intention of angering Shang Qiyue, but Shang Qiyue was like a young monarch. Although he did not show tyranny or capriciousness, his power was enough to make people fearful.
"Thank you for your help," Mu Yan said softly.
"It's not a problem. It's the people who are allowed to continue to act arrogantly that are the real problem for society."
Shang Qiyue spoke as if he were some kind of righteous citizen, while his brother, oblivious to the situation, smiled and echoed his sentiments.
Shang Qiyue politely said to Lin Yi, "Mr. Lin, I drove here. Where do you live? I'll take you home with me."
"No need," Lin Yi quickly refused, picked up her bag and phone and stood up. "I can take the bus back, the number 17, it's very convenient. It's already too much trouble for you to take Xiaoyan back."
Shang Qiyue didn't insist, and smiled politely: "It's no trouble at all, it's on the way. I certainly wouldn't feel at ease if Mu Yan went back like this."
The door closed again.
Lin Yi's footsteps gradually faded into the distance.
"Could you please come over here for me?"
Shang Qiyue didn't answer, but reached out and gently touched the gauze wrapped around Mu Yan's head.
"How did you do that?"
Shang Qiyue's hand felt like it was burning him, and Mu Yan instinctively wanted to dodge it.
However, he restrained himself and did not dodge.
"It was from the thermos..." Mu Yan answered softly.
"Does it hurt?" Shang Qiyue asked.
"It hurts." Mu Yan hesitated for a moment before answering truthfully.
He looked down and could just see the bloodstains on the collar of his sweater. His neck and face were dry, probably because his brother had wiped them with a towel or wet wipes when he passed out.
"How pitiful," Shang Qiyue said.
If it were someone else, Mu Yan wouldn't like that tone and the content of their speech.
High and mighty, pitying, and somewhat mocking.
It's like treating a little dog that's been bullied terribly by others.
But the other party was Shang Qiyue, and Mu Yan had no right to dislike him. He simply addressed him as "Sir" in a dry tone, like an injured puppy running home and seeing its owner, which should have let out a few pitiful whimpers.
That way, the owner will cherish him and feel that the puppy can't live without him.
Shang Qiyue smiled as expected.
"Want to smash it back? Once you're feeling better, I'll take you to the police station to find that guy. Wouldn't it feel better to smash a beer bottle?"
His tone was casual and nonchalant, just as it was when he casually mentioned sending the father and son to prison.
Vigilante justice?
Wasn't vigilante justice strictly prohibited by law twenty years ago?
Mu Yan paused slightly, and after a moment, he hesitated before speaking, "No need... Thank you, President Shang. I just kicked him too... kicked him there."
Mu Yan found it hard to understand the concept of retaliation like "an eye for an eye" or "a tooth for a tooth." If he were to retaliate by relying on Shang Qiyue's power, wouldn't he become someone who abused his privileges just like that person?
He's not a real puppy, nor does he want to rely on his master's power.
