Chapter 301 Afraid of having money but not being alive to spend it
Huang Dehan sat down on a rock, took out bread from his backpack, and ate it with mineral water.
Halfway through the meal, the man came out carrying two plates of dark, unappetizing food.
The man saw him eating but didn't say anything. He invited him upstairs to sit down.
Huang Dehan had no choice but to put the bread and bottled water into his bag and follow the man upstairs.
The man placed the two dishes on the table and asked him if he wanted to eat together.
Huang Dehan quickly waved his hand and said, "No need, I've already eaten, thank you."
The man turned around, went downstairs, and brought back a bowl of rice.
The man ate loudly, making smacking noises, and wolfed down his food, finishing in no time.
Huang Dehan stared in disbelief.
The man smacked his lips and took out a toothpick to pick his teeth.
It was already dark, and the men didn't light any lamps. They sat on the veranda of the wooden stilt house, and a cool breeze blew by. Huang Dehan couldn't help but shiver and quickly zipped up his coat.
The man picked his teeth as he said, "I'll take you to the border in a bit. You'll go there by yourself. Once you get there, someone will meet you. After you get the goods, I'll take you to town. I won't worry about the rest."
"Aren't you coming with me?" Huang Dehan asked in surprise, assuming the two of them were going together.
The man said, "I'm just showing you the way."
Without their guidance, outsiders wouldn't know how to safely reach Myanmar.
Why don't you go?
The man gave a mocking smile and said, "I'm afraid I'll have money but not the life to enjoy it."
Huang Dehan remained noncommittal, saying, "You escorted me across the border, so you're considered my accomplice. If I get caught, you won't escape either."
The man said slowly, "I don't have any drugs on me. Even if they arrest me, they won't sentence me for many years. I won't be sentenced to death. I'll be out in a few years."
Huang Dehan was stunned for a moment before noticing that there seemed to be only the two of them in the wooden house. He then asked, "Why is no one home? Where are they?"
The man replied, "I bought a house in the city, and my wife and children live there. I stay here to make money, so even if I get arrested, it won't affect them."
Huang Dehan was overwhelmed with emotions and didn't know what to say.
The man took out a cigarette from his pocket, tossed one to Huang Dehan, then lit it for himself, took a deep drag, and exhaled a smoke ring.
Huang Dehan took the cigarette, lit it, took a deep drag, and slowly exhaled. He immediately felt his tense mood dissipate.
The man's face became blurred in the swirling smoke. After a long while, he said, "My eldest brother and third brother have both gone inside."
Huang Dehan was somewhat surprised and asked, "Then why are you still doing it?"
The man gave a wry smile: "Where will I get money if I don't work?"
Huang Dehan suddenly became uneasy and asked, "Are we alright?"
The man smiled and asked, "Is this your first time?"
Huang Dehan shook his head. "It's not the first time."
The man smiled and remained silent.
After finishing his cigarette, Huang Dehan asked, "When are we leaving?"
"Wait a little longer, there's still plenty of time."
Bored while sitting, Huang Dehan asked again, "Do you often help Brother Li bring people over?"
The man shook his head and said, "I'm not just helping him."
"Where will you wait for me later?"
"After I drop you off, I'll leave. Once you get the goods, head south until you reach the main road, and you'll see me. I'll be waiting for you there."
