Chapter 2 The Poor Female Supporting Character in the Mountains
Luo Shu heard the old lady, in a strong voice, tell Cao Zihao to go out and play by himself, as her granddaughter couldn't stand the wind and needed to rest in the room.
As she pushed the door open and came in, Cao Zihao tried to force his way in, but the old lady grabbed him and pulled him out.
"Jinbao'er, get up and eat. Your milk is here."
Luo Shu has a nickname, Jinbao'er, which means "precious treasure" to the old lady.
"Okay, milk."
Luo Shu got up and took the two bowls from the old lady's hands. One bowl was a bowl of golden egg custard and the other a small bowl of white porridge, topped with a few pickled radishes, which looked quite appetizing.
Grandma Luo looked at her little granddaughter and felt that the girl had become even more beautiful, more beautiful every day, and that the simple house seemed a little brighter.
The little girl, though only ten years old, possessed an air of elegance, like a lotus flower, standing tall and graceful, untainted by the mud, and pure and unpretentious.
With bright eyes and white teeth, she's as beautiful as a fairy!
If Luo Shu could hear the old lady's thoughts, she would definitely say, "She really is a fairy."
"My dear grandson, eat slowly. You can't stand the wind, so please don't go out, or your rash will flare up again."
Luo Shu slowly finished her steamed egg custard, then drank two mouthfuls of plain porridge, stopping when she was about 80% full.
"Grandma, I know. I'll just stay upstairs and read my textbooks. I won't come downstairs."
Grandma Luo gave the instructions again before taking the bowl outside.
Luo Shu heard another argument outside, and she guessed that Cao Zihao hadn't given up yet and was probably arguing with the old lady again.
"Boss, aren't we going out?"
5283 asked a question, assuming its host would take this opportunity to show off.
"No rush, it's not time yet."
Luo Shu slowly turned on the TV. The mountain village didn't have a wired internet connection; they used a satellite dish, but the signal was very weak, and they could only barely find a few channels.
One of the TV stations is rebroadcasting this variety show, an edited version of the previous season. Although it differs somewhat from the live broadcast, they dare not edit it maliciously precisely because of its popularity, even though the show itself is full of malice.
"Boss, look at this. Is it meant to 'know yourself and your enemy, and you will never be defeated'?"
5283. Not ashamed to ask questions.
Luo Shu smiled but didn't answer; she was indeed curious about the show's format.
At this point, the internet was in an uproar, mainly with Cao Zihao's fans and Zhou Xue's fans tearing into the production team.
Cao Fan #1: This production team is trash! They sent our little brother to suffer in the mountains without even finding a decent family for him. Look at the people they chose! The "Grandma Rong" and "Innocent Flower" duo is ruining his life. He can't eat or sleep properly, he fainted yesterday, and he can't complete his tasks today. Are they doing this on purpose? Are they just jealous of his online traffic?
Cao Fan #2: Yeah, they found a dead old woman and a sickly guy. The younger brother must have had a hard time. What a trashy production team.
Zhou Xue's fans were upset because she had injured herself while doing farm work, cutting her hand.
For the people in the mountains, this was a perfectly normal thing. The girl working with Zhou Xue was 15 years old, the same age as her. When Zhou Xue said she was fine, she thought she was really fine, so she put on a band-aid and pulled Zhou Xue to continue working.
The naive girl didn't understand that when a celebrity says she's fine, it's because she wants you to praise her strength, pity her vulnerability, and forcefully tell her to rest, not because she's really fine.
So when Zhou Xue was forced to continue working despite her hand injury, her fans erupted in outrage.
Zhou Fan #1: Ahhhhh, what is that country girl doing? Xiaoxue's hand is injured, can't she see it? Is she blind? Waaaaah, my poor baby Xuexue!
Zhou Fan #2: My beloved national sweetheart, whom I watched grow up, sob sob sob, why did she have to participate in this show? Her hand is bleeding, can't this country bumpkin see that? Is she just jealous that our Xue'er is pretty? How malicious.
Zhou Xue really didn't want to cut grass anymore; it was a bit hot, and the straw was itchy and painful against her skin. She thought the woman next to her would give her the task card if she saw she was injured, but instead, the woman just kept dragging her to cut grass, which infuriated her.
Since that's the case, why not
Zhou Xue swayed, seemingly exhausted. She bit her lip and gave a gentle smile, then swayed again.
Zhang Li noticed that the pretty girl next to her seemed to be about to faint, so she quickly helped her to sit on the edge of the field and poured her a cup of hot water.
Zhou Xue didn't answer, but just smiled gently and said:
"You drink it, I'm not thirsty. It's just my first time harvesting rice, I'm not used to it yet."
She then smiled sweetly.
Zhang Li waved her hand, telling her to sit there and wait for her. Then she ran to the pile of rice and grabbed a card.
"Little sister, is this what you want? You can take it. I'll get the rice myself. You go back and rest."
Zhou Xue was about to refuse, but then she thought that this was a naive girl, and what if she really thought that she didn't want the card? After thinking about it, she accepted it anyway.
"Sister Xiaoli, I'll go hand in my quest now. I'll come back and harvest the rice with you after I've finished."
Zhang Li waved her hand dismissively: "Why do you need to cut anything? You should go back and rest. I think you're about to faint."
Zhou Xue pursed her lips, gave an apologetic smile, then took the card and left without looking back.
Zhang Li was left alone, facing the rice paddy by herself.
There are also small harvesters here, which are needed for each village. However, the heavens won't wait for the harvesters to finish before it rains, so Zhang Li just hopes to finish harvesting the rice as soon as possible. She's a simple and somewhat naive girl.
Luo Shu had been watching the show for a while. This variety show pranks celebrities, making them look ridiculous, and is happy to take the villagers from the deep mountains to experience the charm of the bustling city, while maliciously creating some accidents to test the villagers' character.
They see themselves as the masters of God, but in reality, they are nothing more than tools for entertaining the audience.
"Hey boss, it's lunchtime. Shall we go out to eat?"
5283 indicates that it can't wait to cause trouble.
"Okay, let's eat out."
Luo Shu changed into a long-sleeved shirt and put on the gauze hat that the old lady had specially made. This hat was made from a small straw hat, with a gauze trim sewn around it to cover her neck.
Luo Shu has a weak constitution; spring pollen or autumn winds easily cause her to have allergies and rashes.
Since He became Luo Shu, this body could not withstand the power of the soul, so He needed to be more careful.
The little girl already possessed a beauty that could topple kingdoms; seen through a veil, she appeared like a flower veiled in mist, graceful and ethereal.
Outside the gate, on the solid yellow earth, Uncle Luo was doing carpentry.
"Dad (a term of endearment for an elder uncle), what are you doing?"
Luo Shu looked at the fairly robust man, who was limping and struggling to do woodworking. Judging from the general shape of the piece, it should be a small table.
"Little Jinbao, stay away."
Uncle Luo wouldn't let Luo Shu get close. He also loved this daughter very much. He was lame and unmarried, and this niece was just like his own daughter.
Moreover, his little niece looks just like a little fairy attendant under Guanyin Bodhisattva; she's so lovable.
He waited until his little niece was a bit further away before speaking.
"Make a small table for Jinbao'er, so that Jinbao'er won't have to do her homework at the dining table anymore."
He polished the table smooth, little by little, as if polishing his love for his youngest daughter into it. Luo Shu stood beside him, watching the table take shape bit by bit.
"Time to eat."
The old lady shouted in a strong voice, and Uncle Luo also finished his work first. The two of them went to the kitchen to eat together.
The kitchen was very small, and the dining table was right next to the stove. On the table, there was only a plate of green vegetables, a salted fish stir-fried with chili peppers, and a bowl of steamed egg custard.
The steamed egg custard was naturally for Luo Shu, who took off her veil while eating.
Uncle Luo, who was standing next to him, was stunned. My goodness, his own niece was getting more and more beautiful every day. In that moment, it was as if he was seeing a fairy.
The old lady looked at the pretty young girl, happy but also a little worried. She didn't know whether such a beautiful girl was a blessing or a curse.
Luo Shu finished her lunch amidst her uncle's dazed state and her grandmother's mixed feelings of joy and sorrow. After lunch, her grandmother urged her to take a nap and rest.
As they walked into the lobby, they encountered Cao Zihao and his group returning from outside. Several young men, about a dozen in number, were looking in their direction, accompanied by their live-streaming drones.
They were dressed in trendy brand clothes, fashionable and sophisticated, which seemed out of place in this gloomy little village.
Cao Zihao and his group also saw the little girl wearing a veil, and their eyes lit up.
Like a delicate lotus flower glistening with dew, it stands tall and graceful, possessing its own unique charm and beauty.
Luo Shu wore long sleeves, revealing only her small hands. Her skin was as white as ice and her bones as thin as jade, so frail that she could hardly bear the weight of her clothes. She was a hidden gem, unknown to the world.
Cao Zihao then realized that the little girl he saw was the child in the mission. She was indeed very young, probably around 10 years old. She was wearing a veil on her head, so her face could not be seen. However, she was not like an ordinary child. She had a grand demeanor, unlike the kind of child who could be raised in the countryside.
Luo Shu glanced at them, and seeing that they didn't say anything, she went into her room on her own. Her body was easily fatigued.
For some reason, no one called out to the girl. The group looked at each other for a long time before finally finding Old Lady Luo and telling her that they had a mission to complete.
The live streamer focused on celebrities, and when Luo Shu accidentally appeared in the frame, only a general outline was captured. Viewers didn't get a clearer view than Cao Zihao and the others who were watching live.
The comments section was also filled with complaints.
Why is a country girl acting so mysterious and causing trouble?
Maybe they're really ugly and embarrassed to show their face.
Yes, yes, this is a live broadcast. If someone is pretty, they'll definitely show their face and steal the spotlight!
The comments section was filled with speculation, with only a couple of guesses suggesting that Luo Shu was good-looking, but these were quickly overshadowed by the others.
"Hey bro, everyone on the online forums is saying you're really ugly and you're too scared to show your face."
5283 was furious. Its host was an absolute beauty, okay? It really wanted to throw the host's photo into Cao Zihao's fan supertopic and slap them in the face.
"Hmm, no need to rush. It's more interesting when a tall building collapses after it's built."
Cao Zihao's situation was rather unsuccessful. The task they received from Grandma Luo was to dig up the vegetable garden, which was right next to the Luo family's house.
Cao Zihao and his good brother Zhao Minglang quietly dug in the ground. Both of them were usually lively and outgoing, but they were unusually quiet at this moment. They were both lost in thought, still thinking about that fleeting glimpse of her face. They were itching to see what her face looked like under the veil.
The two weren't focused on their work, and they only dug a shallow layer of ground. It's estimated that Grandma Luo and Uncle Luo will have to redo it later.
Their fans, however, didn't think so. They argued that the younger brothers worked so hard, even condescending to dig in the ground, which made them role models and exemplars. What was there to complain about? They must just be jealous of the younger brothers' popularity.
Luo Shu woke up after an hour. Sleeping too long makes it hard to sleep well at night. She needs to take good care of her delicate body. She watched TV for a while in her room and finished her homework.
Just as I was getting bored, there was a noise at the door, followed by a boy's clear voice.
"Little sister, come out and I'll take you out to play."
