Before Chu Yu could wait any longer, just a few minutes later, Ning Feng came out with a smile, carrying a bottle of wine and a set of carriage keys.
Blocking Chu Yu's view, Ning Feng quickly closed the door and, without saying a word, led them directly to the back door of the inn, where they found the carriage that was far too luxurious for an innkeeper.
He whispered a few words in Rod's ear, transforming him into a completely ruthless driver as he drove...
Without avoiding the oncoming soldiers, the carriage walked right past them in a blatant manner.
The entire process was not hindered by any soldiers, nor was it even discovered!
It was as if they were walking in another dimension, with the chariot carrying demons silently passing by the soldiers.
Chu Yu wasn't some naive girl who hadn't seen much of the world; she and Margaret had completed many missions together. But she had never seen a scene as strange as this before.
The whole process took less than ten minutes, and they swaggered out of the dead end they were about to face.
Incredible.
What happened in those few short minutes?
Why did Ning Feng allow that stingy and greedy boss to contribute his carriage as requested?
Outright robbery?
Ning Feng noticed Chu Yu's furrowed brows and smiled.
"Are you curious? Want to know why the innkeeper 'lent' us the carriage?"
Ning Feng swirled the most expensive red wine he had taken from the hotel owner, but did not taste it. He simply brought his nose to the rim of the glass and sniffed it lightly.
"This technique is a waste of such good raw materials."
Looking disappointed, Ning Feng had absolutely no interest in trying it.
Even the most expensive red wine in the hotel couldn't compare to the cheap products produced by modern industrial assembly lines in Ning Feng's eyes.
There are huge differences between the two in terms of craftsmanship, technology, hygiene, etc.
Even if it's popular, the "traditional" method isn't necessarily better.
The world of the past was the same; it's not worth longing for.
With a meaningful look, Ning Feng shifted his gaze, staring at the reflection of his eyes in the red wine, and said:
"I only guessed some of his little secrets and then tentatively made some negotiations. I never expected it to be so generous."
secret?
Understanding Chu Yu's gaze, Ning Feng smiled and nodded, patiently explaining:
"Well, it's a secret that's neither too big nor too small, though perhaps it's something he can't let others know."
"On the surface, he's just a hotel owner. Even if he has connections with some local thugs, his real background isn't that strong."
Chu Yu frowned even deeper as he began to ponder Ning Feng's words.
This is a very reasonable speculation.
If the hotel owner truly had the ability and connections, he wouldn't be content to run a small, run-down hotel in such a remote area bordering a slum and a working-class neighborhood.
However, if we have to assume this as a premise... it seems that such a thing is not impossible.
The matter is still feasible to some extent.
For example...
Guiding Chu Yu's train of thought, Ning Feng patiently explained:
"Yes, if he wasn't here, or if he had a reason to stay here."
"And why does he get so angry when we see the strange beggar? Is it really because he doesn't like seeing this person?"
I don't think so.
His tone was humble, but everything Ning Feng revealed indicated one thing...
He was very certain of his judgment.
Unwavering.
"What's the big deal if a beggar sneaks into the hotel? This isn't some fancy place, what's there to be afraid of?"
It's just a run-down little hotel in the slums, so we can't be worried about hygiene and safety, can we?
"His strong reaction was simply an attempt to cover up other secrets with his angry outburst."
Actions like "Because I'm afraid of ending my student life by taking my clothes off during class, I'll cover it up with a louder voice!"
The attempt to cover it up only makes it more obvious.
"Let's make a bold assumption... For example, he's worried that the strange man will reveal his secret."
Without keeping everyone in suspense, Ning Feng directly revealed his "guess":
"In the slave trade, the innkeeper might be a subordinate of a nobleman or a slave trader."
"They are responsible for finding or even arresting homeless people in the slums here and then secretly sending them to certain people."
The so-called middlemen who make a profit from the price difference.
And that strange man was the lucky one who secretly slipped out.
It's just a pity that he was a madman and didn't run away immediately.
"And someone like him, with a guilty conscience, would definitely be worried about having his secrets discovered."
Ning Feng shrugged easily and said somewhat embarrassedly:
“And once I have this leverage, I can make someone like him do one of my small requests.”
"Oh, another reason he agreed so easily was because the soldiers were approaching. He knew very well that those soldiers were not the kind of lowlifes who could be bribed by them."
Ning Feng didn't let Chu Yu speak throughout the entire process. He quickly explained the whole procedure and then gave her time to think, while he continued to smell the red wine.
The carriage moved forward smoothly. After thinking for a while, Chu Yu spoke softly:
Are these all just your speculations?
Chu Yu remained skeptical.
"Or is there something I'm not allowed to know?"
