The oath of the watchman.
Every Watcher makes an oath when they truly decide to join the Watch.
The original group of Watchers were almost all pure idealists.
They swore to protect humanity, to be loyal to the world, and only lastly to be loyal to themselves.
Such an oath may not guarantee that every Watcher will strictly adhere to it, but it will remind them of these bottom lines and constraints at crucial moments.
In recent centuries, some people have said that Watchmen is slowly changing and developing into the very thing it once despised.
This may be true; there is no organization in the world that remains unchanged forever.
Even organizations born from humanity's noblest ideals are not immune to minor changes over time.
However, it is undeniable that no matter how many subtle changes are made, the true essence of Overwatch will not change.
They are guardians of peace and dreamers who pursue their ideals.
Guh.
Augustus kept his head down, but he began to feel nervous involuntarily.
Even though he is a legendary mage, even with his current strength and status, there are few people in this world who can threaten him.
But at this moment, Augustus still felt unwell.
It wasn't because he was afraid of exposing what he had done, but simply because of the person in front of him.
The Stargazer
An ancient, powerful, and even great legendary Watcher.
The face was not deliberately concealed, yet it was difficult to see clearly; apart from the light-colored eyes, everything about the stargazer seemed impossible to observe.
This title, which has been passed down in the Watchers' Chronicles for nearly a thousand years, is not inherited from generation to generation, but belongs exclusively to her.
As time passed, even her name disappeared into the river of time, forgotten by all.
A legend who dedicated everything to the Watchers, even sacrificing his own existence.
From the moment everyone forgot her name, all that remained in the Sky City was a stargazer who would forever gaze upon the sea of clouds.
Despite being called a stargazer, he never looks up at the starry sky, but instead gazes down at the sea of clouds beneath his feet.
What is she looking at? And what does she hope to see?
Nobody knows.
Even Augustus, who was already a high-ranking member of the Watchers, would not normally have the opportunity to meet this mysterious being unless he was assigned to oversee the Observer Project.
With lightning speed in his mind, Augustus continuously analyzed the scene before him. Since entering the legendary realm, he hadn't thought this quickly in a long time.
What does she mean?
Why ask this question?
Is she questioning my loyalty to the Watchmen?
Or is it...?
She wasn't suspicious?
His mood became heavy, but Augustus calmed down after thinking things through.
Regardless of what the other party noticed, he had a clear conscience.
"…………"
Outside the window, the sea of clouds surged, and silence spread and diffused in the desolate and deserted space, finally coalescing into a deep stillness.
Just as Augustus was beginning to waver, the stargazer silently withdrew his gaze.
He turned around and walked to the chair next to the huge round table. He didn't sit in the largest seat, but sat down next to it.
Looking at the tall old man who was still standing there with his head bowed, the stargazer spoke softly:
What do you think the Observer Project means?
What does it mean?
This problem had actually troubled Augustus for a long time.
For more than 20 years since he took over the project, he has been pondering its deeper meaning.
What do these observed entities mean?
All that can be confirmed is that the stargazers are searching for someone, a very special person.
Gender, age, occupation, strength, faction... none of these are known; all sorts of people have been included.
But they all have some special features.
It's either amazing talent, incredible luck, or astonishing learning...
But why, even though their range has been locked, do you not intervene, but instead silently observe them, let them develop, and even... ignore their deaths?
He had considered many explanations for this problem, but ultimately he did not have a definite answer.
Even without a reply, Augustus knew the other party would offer an explanation.
Sure enough, the stargazer continued:
"We are... searching for hope."
"Just as prophesied."
Hope? Prophecy?
Augustus was bewildered; he hadn't expected to hear such unrealistic words from this lord.
To be honest, he found it all rather absurd and ridiculous.
When will the Watchers rely on such vague and ethereal prophecies?
The stargazer gave him a deep look and sensed his resentment, but offered no explanation.
She simply sighed silently, leaned back slowly in her chair, and said softly:
It's okay if you don't understand now; maybe you will understand later.
"Don't interfere too much, and don't push them onto a path opposite to ours."
"Let's go. I'm aware of what happened this time. Let's not let it happen again."
With a furrowed brow, Augustus raised his head, ready to retort.
"but……"
Before he could utter a word, he saw a blinding crimson drip from the stargazer's hood and onto his robes.
His pale, deep gaze remained unchanged as the stargazer slowly repeated:
"Let's go."
suck!
Taking a deep breath, Augustus's expression returned to normal. He straightened up, ignoring the blood at the corner of her mouth, and immediately turned and left without the slightest hesitation.
Clang.
After stepping out of the gate, Augustus paused for a moment, bowed slightly to the gate, and then turned and left.
As he walked slowly, without the stargazers watching, Augustus's composure quickly returned to normal.
As a legend who has been famous for over a century, he naturally possesses the corresponding composure and would not lose his composure due to such embarrassment and confusion.
So what does this mean? Is it a warning, or a reprimand?
"Hope? Are we to place our hopes on some vague and unfounded prophecy?"
absurd.
Returning to the stairs, Augustus paused briefly before slowly descending.
"Loyal to humanity, loyal to the world, loyal to oneself..."
He muttered to himself, then turned to look at the portraits of the first few leaders that were hanging on the wall of the hall.
Looking up at the masked figure, Augustus murmured to himself:
"But why? They never said they would pledge allegiance to the Watchers..."
As he spoke, he disappeared into the corridor.
Disappeared.
...
Clang.
"well……"
Shaking his head at the closed door, the stargazer slowly wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and chuckled softly:
"A vague and ethereal prophecy?"
"You'll laugh when you hear that, after all... that's what you most want to hear."
The stargazer closed his eyes, recalling the scene he had just witnessed: the intertwined figures of angels and demons.
Could it be you?
"[The Prophet]..."
