"Go straight to the right of Emergency Ward 3, the third room is there, um, don't be shy."
After seeing off another group of anxious visiting relatives, Lin Shuang straightened the sash that read "Excellent Nurse" slung across her body and sighed quietly.
"Sigh, the night shift has only just begun, and I'm already starting to feel the strain."
Am I... really suited for this industry?
Lin Shuang was quite proud at first that she got a job at the largest private hospital in Bincheng right after graduating from college.
But less than two months later, Lin Shuang felt that she looked much more haggard than before and was almost suffering from neurasthenia.
The emergency room lobby at night was not as quiet as I had imagined; it didn't feel peaceful at all, contrary to the tranquility of the night.
The noisy cries, anxious pleas, and restless conflicts... it's so chaotic and clamorous that you just want to run away as soon as you see it.
Patients who come urgently for medical treatment often bring a large group of concerned family members who crowd around their bedside.
With so many people, it's inevitable that bumps and scrapes will occur when people are crowded together.
From verbal exchanges to physical conflicts, often all it takes is a single glance.
What are you looking at?
"What are you looking at?"
The anxiety and helplessness stemming from the patients' condition make it clear that a fight breaking out over a disagreement isn't just a joke.
Of course, it usually doesn't escalate to a full-blown fight. As soon as the doctor says, "If you keep hitting each other, I'm going to see other patients!", both sides will become incredibly docile again.
What's even more exhausting than friction between family members...
People always leave here.
The fragility of life is laid bare here.
The seemingly tenacious life can sometimes vanish in the blink of an eye.
The walls of hospitals have heard more devout prayers and confessions than the confessionals of churches.
Joy, sorrow, anger, and happiness are not shared between people.
Wailing, arguing, repentance...
This place is like a negative microcosm of society, and under such circumstances, one's inner restlessness is constantly stimulated.
Perhaps, in some ways, this is just like the restlessness of the night.
As maintainers of order, the nurses on duty at the lobby service desk could not keep up with the commotion and could only try their best to fight against the atmosphere, which left them feeling exhausted.
But after seeing so much, one inevitably becomes numb and loses some clarity about the concepts of life and death.
Coupled with her reversed day-night schedule and gradually decreasing social interactions with friends, Lin Shuang felt that she was about to lose touch with the world.
"I can't think about it anymore, or I'll have to see a psychologist."
As a large, comprehensive hospital, the doctors in its own psychology department are top-notch in the industry, and you can sometimes see them a few times in the cafeteria.
There's nothing mysterious about it; it's no different from doctors in other departments.
"Speaking of mystery, I vaguely remember a psychiatrist who was always busy with his own research and didn't see patients much. I was so envious! Speaking of which, what was his last name again..."
"Xiaoshuang! I'll take these patients to see Dr. Zhang first. You can take charge of the lobby for now!"
The head nurse's slightly stern voice jolted Lin Shuang, the young nurse, back to reality, and she reflexively replied:
"OK!"
Lin Shuang didn't know what Pavlov's dog was thinking about the scientists' experiments, but she knew that if she was caught skipping work, she would definitely be punished.
The head nurse is a magical figure; few nurses have escaped the loving beatings of their head nurse.
What's even more terrifying than the head nurse is the head nurse of the emergency department!
Watching the head nurse lead several injured patients quickly away, Lin Shuang patted her cheeks:
"Alright, alright! No more daydreaming! Let's finish the work first."
With her hands gently clasped under her lower abdomen, Lin Shuang tried her best to maintain her T-stance and friendly smile, waiting for inquiries from patients and relatives with a standard communication posture.
After looking around the hall, Lin Shuang suddenly sensed something unusual at the entrance and turned her gaze in that direction.
A tall man wearing a mask and a baseball cap to cover his face stood at the door, carrying a fruit basket and looking around inside, seemingly searching for something.
The shadow cast by the brim of his hat made it difficult for Lin Shuang to see his face clearly, but she could vaguely sense that his eyes were very bright.
Although it was a bit strange for him to be wearing a mask and looking around at the emergency room entrance in the middle of the night, there was nothing wrong with his clothing, and the fruit basket he was carrying added some justification to his behavior.
Most importantly, during her internship, Lin Shuang had seen all sorts of people at the hospital, including some with strange clothes or even strange behavior, so she had become somewhat used to it.
She didn't find it too strange and quickly came to a conclusion about the man's identity in her mind:
A relative visiting a patient in the hospital might still be one of those taciturn and reserved individuals, slightly eccentric but not worth paying attention to.
But it wouldn't do to let him stand blocking the door indefinitely, so Lin Shuang quickly walked up to the man, maintaining a smile as she softly asked him:
"Sir, is there anything I can help you with?"
As if he hadn't expected to be questioned, the man visibly tightened his grip on the fruit basket and abruptly turned to look at Lin Shuang in front of him.
If someone were to look at him from the side at this moment, they would notice that he seemed very nervous.
His limbs were somewhat uncoordinated, his body was tense, and he almost took off walking, like a timid person who had been frightened.
Strangely, as long as you can see his eyes, you can feel the ferocity within them that is completely inconsistent with his cowardly behavior.
