Chapter 5: The Literary Master Who Gave Up Literature and Turned to Martial Arts

Tanizaki Junichiro's expression reminded Atsushi of the way he looked when he found out that cats could talk.

Probably exactly the same, Nakajima Atsushi thought.

Naomi Tanizaki accepted it well, and after digesting the initial surprise, she resumed her daily life as a detective. Yosano Akiko, who was following behind the two, poked her head out a little later and accurately locked onto Oda Neko, who was once again lowering her head to read the documents.

"Ah." Yoseno Akiko smiled, "What a magical cat! Can I study it?"

Nakajima Atsushi's pupils trembled: "Please calm down, Miss Yosano!!"

Oda:?

Because of this, Oda looked towards the center of the quarrel, and saw a machete with its tip looming, and Nakajima Atsushi who was panicking and trying to stop him.

It was Miss Yosano. Oda realized belatedly that this person had the same personality as the doctor in the cat world.

Although he was helping to process the documents, Dazai unreservedly combined his pile with the pile allocated to Oda, and the man and the cat occupied a table to themselves.

The detective agency hasn't had any important commissions lately, most of them are just ordinary trivia that can be categorized with a quick glance. This also gives Oda time to think about what the mission is.

A whole day had passed since he came to this world's detective agency, and Oda still had nothing to show for it - except for reading documents all afternoon.

As time passed, the last bit of dusk light was gradually swallowed up by the inky night.

"Then, where will Mr. Oda live?" Nakajima Atsushi faced the challenge, his voice trembling slightly under the gazes of those around him.

Dazai blinked and said, "Odasaku is of course with me."

Oda: “…………”

He felt like he was trapped in some strange Shura field.

"I think I can live alone." Relying on the fact that he is a cat, Oda said calmly. He doesn't take up any space now and he would be very comfortable even if he sleeps on the sofa in the detective agency.

In the end, due to Oda's serious refusal, both proposals failed, and the others packed up their things and left.

An inaudible reminder tone rang in his mind, and the big cat glanced outside, as if he suddenly saw something. He hurriedly said goodbye, "See you tomorrow," and went out through the half-open window.

"..." Nakajima Atsushi was silent for a while, then slowly said, "Then Mr. Dazai, do we still need to close the windows?"

Dazai Osamu's gaze fell to the window, and a hint of dark red quickly disappeared from his sight.

"Turn it off," he said, turning around and walking out the door, waving goodbye to Dun: "Remember to lock the door, Dunjun."

“So noisy…”

There were constant alarm sounds in Oda's mind, guiding him all the way to the bench where he had stopped this morning.

Just now he saw a young girl downstairs of the detective agency, which was why the system, which should have been silent, suddenly issued a prompt.

Strange, why is there such a big reaction? And why let him leave the detective agency temporarily?

The shrill sound didn't stop until one minute after he arrived at the destination. Oda's mind was full of questions and the sound gave him a headache. He simply lay down on the bench and used his mind to open the flashing task interface.

The task bar that originally only had "Armed Detective Agency" written on it trembled, and a new box appeared.

"Drive out illegal intruders"

Oda's movements were slightly delayed.

When he was first hired, the system explained to him very seriously that they had a formal cooperative relationship with the world consciousness, and that the tasks that could be taken by the taskers were also issued autonomously by these consciousnesses.

The illegal invaders can be more simply understood as "travelers who bring illegal systems into the world."

Illegal systems need energy to survive, but because they are abandoned by the System Management Bureau, they cannot obtain regular energy, so they need to sign a contract with the "host" and enter various worlds to seize their origins.

The deceived travelers thought they could only enter the second dimension and have a love affair with their favorite characters, and they had no idea about the twists and turns. Whenever the strategy failed, the travelers' souls would be destroyed by the illegal system and turned into energy.

Oda read the relevant information twice carefully and memorized it in his mind. The first page explained how to drive away the invaders.

“Do we need to destroy the illegal system first…” Oda sighed. He was just a novice in the mission, but he encountered something that even high-level players might not encounter. Should he say that he was lucky enough to draw the lowest-level N card in the novice mission?

The system probably made him leave the detective agency because of that girl, but Oda was not sure about the specific reason.

"Well, let's take it one step at a time."

It was a rare opportunity for him to arrive early, and when Dazai Osamu pushed open the door of the detective agency, most of the people in the house were already there. Lying quietly on the sofa was a familiar big cat - Oda Sakunosuke.

He walked over briskly and woke up Oda, who was in a sleepy state due to the influence of cat habits, and then his hand jumped up to touch the cat's head.

“It has absolutely no effect.”

Dazai Osamu withdrew his hand and fell back on the sofa. Oda still remained in the cat state, sitting next to him.

In order to test the probability of "disqualification from being human" triggering Oda Saku's helper cat to turn into a human, Dazai Osamu was not tired of it and, with Oda's voluntary cooperation, had physical contact with it every few minutes.

In simple terms, it means petting cats.

Half an hour later, the 'probability' that was clearly triggered the first time yesterday seemed to be invalid today, and it didn't succeed even once.

——It’s like the non-N cards in the card drawing game, Dazai.

Oda complained silently in his heart, but he felt as if he had been stabbed in the back. After all, he had been encountering strange things since he came to this world.

"Dazai, there's a commission for you here." Kunikida opened the notebook filled with the itinerary, but the person who was called lay lazily on the sofa, not moving, as if he didn't hear him.

"Oda also needs to go on this commission." Edogawa Ranpo suddenly said, "Maybe you'll encounter an unexpected surprise."

The detective's words were meaningful.

Oda nodded in agreement, not realizing why he, as a cat, should handle the commission here.

When Dazai heard that Oda was also going, he immediately sat up and said, "Yoshi, let me take a look at the details of the commission."

Oda followed Dazai closely, with her limbs spread out. She was close enough that Dazai could see her if she lowered her head. She also turned her head to say goodbye to the detectives: "We are leaving."

At this hour, the streets were crowded with people, so it was not convenient for Oda to speak, so Dazai was the only one who spoke occasionally along the way.

The man and the cat walked slowly until they passed a river that looked very familiar to Oda. Then Dazai jumped in.

Oda: “…………”

After thinking for two seconds whether he, as a cat, could pull Dazai Osamu to shore, he gave up all his chaotic thoughts and jumped in quickly. He was soon submerged in the deep water, with only his head barely visible.

Oda bit Dazai's windbreaker collar and tried to drag him to the shore, but he fell down instead.

In the end, Dazai turned over in the river, laid on his back, held the cat in his arms to prevent it from choking on water, and then floated away with the current.

Oda shook his tail, which had become heavy from the water, and said, "Dazai, you're going to hit a rock later."

There was a huge rock blocking the direction in which Dazai Osamu was sailing, but he was not worried at all.

"Odasaku," he said calmly, "Are you not angry?"

What he was referring to was, of course, the incident in which he suddenly fell into the water while on his way to complete a commission.

Oda: "It's okay. After all, you in the other world often do this."

Dazai: “…………”

"I'm a little jealous." He said this softly, but Oda, who was lying on top of him, didn't hear it clearly at all. Only a few vague syllables fell into his ears.

Odasaku did not die, and he successfully led his children out of the darkness of Hong Kong and into the bright world - I want to know more.

The sunlight was not too glaring, and the azure sky dotted with clouds fell into Dazai's eyes.

"Has Oda Saku written any novels?" he asked.

Oda didn't know why the topic suddenly turned to this, but he continued: "Ah, I'm already preparing to write the second book."

"Really?" Dazai perked up a little, looked into the sun's eyes for a long time, and began to say: "If there is a chance, can I read the novel written by Oda?"
