Greed resurfaces

Greed resurfaces

Lin Jiuyang didn't know about other places, but the director and deputy director of the Shenxian Revolutionary Committee were all people who valued money over life. After living well for a long time, prioritizing money became their life motto.

Whether or not superiors confess, whether or not face is at stake—those are things that only come into play when there are no tangible benefits to be gained.

With gold and silver treasures readily available, we can put aside anyone's words for now.

Lin Jiuyang was certainly not immune to corruption; he was in cahoots with the other directors.

The elderly couple, Song Baicao and Huang Qingxing, were practically drooling with anticipation.

When she pushed the door open, Huang Qingxing was still following behind Song Baicao. She only knew that her husband had gone out alone once before, saying that he had thought of a way to make their son give in, but she never expected that it would escalate to the Revolutionary Committee.

How dare he!

Have you forgotten how your family members, young and old, were forced to the ground and begged for mercy, and how they were driven out of the house as if they were born into poverty?

Song Baicao never gave up or accepted his fate. He knew that the current situation would not last forever, and even if it did, he would find a way to change his destiny.

He studied medicine, and he was quite outstanding at it. Countless lives of powerful and influential people were in his hands.

Even today, he was brought here, his face covered in dust, his body hunched over, standing in a clean and tidy office, the incandescent light shining on his tattered clothes with several holes.

His son sat at the table, silently looking back.

Song Baicao never imagined that he would be reported to the Revolutionary Committee. Weren't those leaders always kind to him in order to live longer? He had never heard them use words like "stinking intellectual" before.

Even if he's not presentable now, he might still be eating better than those ordinary people.

Wu Dong was one of those leaders.

Therefore, even after his treatment plummeted, Song Baicao wasn't too afraid. He thought that Wu Dong and he had a tacit understanding and could work together to control Meng Songying.

He could catch his breath, and Wu Dong could also deliver a heavy blow to his rival, factory director Sun Ming. He never thought that Wu Dong would betray him!

Song Baicao seemed to wake up from a dream, finally realizing that things were different now than before.

His spirits vanished instantly. He stood timidly in front of the table, awaiting judgment, but still remembered to deny it: "Leader, my surname is Song, and Meng Songying's surname is Meng. How could we be father and son?"

Wu Dong is not a good person, and although Meng Songying has already turned against him, they are still related by blood. Song Baicao is not so sure that she has chosen the wrong side.

Moreover, ultimately, he had no evidence that the jade pendant was not there.

Zhang Ping'an cursed and shoved him: "Old man, you still dare to argue even when you're about to die! You and Meng Songying both have half a jade pendant, don't you? That's the evidence that you two recognized each other as father and son!"

This story was told by Song Baicao to gain Wu Dong's trust. She described the jade pendant in great detail. Wu Dong happened to know that Meng Songying did indeed have such a thing, so he truly believed Song Baicao.

However, Song Baicao did not mention that his half was stolen and ended up in Meng Songying's hands.

Lin Jiuyang squinted: "Engineer Meng, then I have to ask you something: do you have half a piece of jade pendant?"

Sun Ming and Li Yuanhong both breathed a sigh of relief for him, while Meng Songying calmly replied, "Yes."

Lin Jiuyang leaned back in his chair: "What about the other half?"

Meng Songying: "They're with me too."

...

Lin Jiuyang had interrogated many people and developed an intuition for lies. Just by looking at Meng Songying's expressionless face, he knew she wasn't lying.

He didn't press the matter further, staring at Song Baicao: "Tell me about your background."

These were all familiar procedures, and even after several years, Song Baicao could still recite them off the cuff, detailing the Song family's businesses one by one.

The more Lin Jiuyang spoke, the brighter his eyes became, practically gleaming with greed. A cunning rabbit has three burrows; even though these properties have certainly been confiscated, the richer a person is, the more likely they are to hide things.

Song Baicao concluded by saying, "The Song family's affairs were handled by Shen Zhenfa, the director of the Jiangsu Provincial Revolutionary Committee."

Lin Jiuyang immediately became dejected again. He had heard of Director Shen's name before. He thought it would be better if he were surnamed Zhou, because he was a real skinflint. He even had a group of hunting dogs under his command. He didn't know how he managed to gather them up one by one.

Even if not all of the Song family's belongings were found, what's left would be pitifully small, probably not even worth the attention of the directors in Shen County.

Lin Jiuyang rolled his eyes and ordered his men to take Song Baicao and Huang Qingxing out for a look. Even a small mosquito is still meat. The director-level officials have no interest in leftovers, but he does.

With money waiting for him, he planned to resolve the sugar factory dispute as soon as possible: "Zhang Ping'an, I think you're tired of living. You dare to play fake reports and mess with our Revolutionary Committee, right?"

Zhang Ping'an was covered in cold sweat and kept looking in Wu Dong's direction: "No, no, leader, I'm sure I'm not lying."

Lin Jiuyang slammed his fist on the table and shouted, "You still dare to lie!"

Wu Dong stopped trying to hide it. No matter how well he pretended, everyone knew that he was the initiator of this whistleblowing incident. If Sun Ming and his gang escaped, he would definitely suffer a terrible fate.

"Team Leader Lin, Comrade Zhang Ping'an reported more than just this one thing. Director Sun's abuse of power and Meng Songying's affair with Wang Shuitao have not yet been explained."

This isn't Wu Dong speaking, this is gold bars speaking. This isn't Wu Dong speaking, this is gold bars speaking. This isn't Wu Dong speaking, this is gold bars speaking.

After silently repeating it three times in his mind, Lin Jiuyang finally managed to control his anxiety: "Alright, then I'll explain."

Li Yuanhong snorted: "Wu Dong, didn't you hear what I just said? The burden of proof lies with the person making the accusation. Zhang Ping'an can't even produce any evidence, so what are we supposed to explain? Just because someone accuses you of embezzlement and bribery, does that mean you have to lay out your entire fortune for everyone to see?"

Lin Jiuyang clicked his tongue: "Sister Li is really joking. Is there really someone reporting Wu Dong for accepting bribes?"

He tentatively suggested that if Wu Dong were reported, his home would definitely be searched, regardless of any evidence; they would deal with it after the search was completed.

This guy owns gold bars; his house must have countless valuable possessions.

Most importantly, he has no connections.

Wu Dong's face turned ashen. He grabbed a notebook from the table and threw it at Zhang Ping'an, yelling, "Where's the witness?! Bring him up right now!"

Damn that Revolutionary Committee! They took the gold bars and did nothing, yet they dared to covet his property! Those sons of bitches! Damn Lin Jiuyang!

So, Zhang Ping'an's younger brother and sister-in-law, Zhang Pingkang and Zhu Qiuguo, were brought here. They were witnesses to Sun Ming's abuse of power, but they remained silent. When Lin Jiuyang asked them a couple of questions, Zhang Pingkang just hung his head and sighed, while Zhu Qiuguo cried and said that she and her husband had always married willingly and were truly in love.

Lin Jiuyang was so embarrassed by the sweet talk that he almost lost his balance.

Sun Jiadu and Zhao Bu were also brought here. They were witnesses to Meng Songying and Wang Shuitao's illicit affair, and they didn't change their story, continuing to talk loudly and incessantly.

Just then, Wang Xingye, also known as Old Wang, from the factory office, barged in. He wanted to report Wu Dong for embezzling sugar factory resources, undermining socialism, suppressing subordinates, slandering colleagues, and falsely accusing leaders!
