Chapter 189 A Day Trip to Gengyang

Chapter 189 A Day Trip to Gengyang

The staff members, who had been out all night drunk and had no idea where they were, woke up to find themselves sitting on bus seats.

The scene before them kept moving, and the people in their seats swayed from time to time with the movement of the vehicle, confirming that they were indeed on the bus.

The clerks opened their eyes one after another and nudged their colleagues awake, all of them looking out the window in surprise.

It was a completely dark world, but unlike the base's nighttime conditions, there wasn't a single light here.

People can even see the sky and the lonely moon when they look up.

Where is this?

"This is outside the base! Oh my god, we're on the ground!"

Am I dreaming?

"What happened?"

"Waking up from a team-building activity and being sold to northern Myanmar, has this really happened?"

"Damn it, stop talking! It's dangerous on the ground. What happened? Third Sister... oh no, Zhang San, where's Dean Zhang?"

Lin Xi's voice came faintly from the front of the car: "That's right, we've arrived outside the base now, and there are still 20 kilometers to go before entering Gengyang."

Gengyang City is the county-level city closest to the Dawn Base. It is famous throughout the country for its high GDP and a 5A-level ancient town scenic area.

Some people couldn't sit still any longer: "What's going on? Why are we coming to the ground?"

"Exactly, weren't they saying that entry and exit from the base are strictly controlled? How did we get out?"

Some people whispered conspiracy theories, while others were puzzled as to how they had woken up on the ground.

Lin Xi, sitting at the very front, pinched her arm to force herself to wake up when she heard everyone's voices.

They got the people into the car and drove them out overnight. Lin Xi had only just dozed off for a while, and Liang Hui was keeping an eye on things for her.

At this point, Liang Hui chimed in, "Team building trip, huh?"

"Going to Gengyang for tourism?"

"Oh my god, I thought it was just a joke, at most we could play in the amusement park at the base."

"This is insane! That moving black shadow in front is a zombie."

"I don't want to participate in the team building activities anymore, I want to go back to the base!"

The lights inside the carriage suddenly came on, and everyone squinted to adjust to the light.

It was the cargo compartment of a freight truck, with seats arranged very close together in all directions, making everyone uncomfortable. Everyone was strapped in with seatbelts, but they could be unbuckled manually.

There were four armed guards at the front and back of the carriage, and their "Dean Zhang" stood at the very front of the carriage with dark circles under his eyes.

A lieutenant colonel stood beside her.

One of the more alert individuals glanced out the window and was the first to realize something was wrong: "We're in the wilderness! If we turn on the lights inside the car, we'll become sitting ducks!"

Lin Xi's voice was very calm: "We are currently conducting our second day of team building activities. We will arrive at our destination, Gengyang, in about 30 minutes. Everyone is required to participate in the team activities and no one is allowed to leave early."

The tone of his voice trailed off at the end, carrying a hint of lightness and playfulness.

But the staff members in the car were terrified upon hearing this, and either pleaded or demanded that they return to the base immediately.

But once the headlights were turned off, the interior of the carriage returned to darkness, and Lin Xi ignored it.

Within minutes, the first rays of dawn dispelled the darkness, the sky gradually turned deep blue, and a few golden rays appeared.

The sunrise was beautiful, but the clerks who knew about zombies knew that dawn meant the zombies were more active, and the truck had already entered Gengyang city, where the densely packed buildings might be hiding some kind of danger.

"Can we draw the curtains? The zombies will see us."

Lin Xi nodded and gave Lieutenant Colonel Liang a look. Lieutenant Colonel Liang understood and pressed a switch to open the blinds on the carriage wall to the open.

The entire carriage is made of bulletproof glass. When the curtain is pulled back, the carriage becomes almost transparent, revealing the scenery outside and, of course, the interior as well.

"Ah! What's going on?"

Lin Xi, acting as a tour guide, earnestly introduced, "What we are seeing now is the central street of Gengyang City. The ancient town of Gengyang next to it has a history of nearly a thousand years. The scenery here is charming and the culture is captivating..."

She read aloud the content that didn't match the pictures, based on a tour guide script she had searched for in advance.

In reality, the streets of Gengyang are in disarray, with some of the buildings on both sides damaged and the walls stained with blackened and brownish old bloodstains.

The once beautiful ancient town and bustling streets have completely lost their charm; it is now a faded, wasteland city.

As the sun gradually rose and the dawn swept across the land, the land remained devoid of life, making the city appear even more quiet and desolate.

The passengers inside the carriage watched the scene outside in silence.

They had never left the base since entering it. Although they could imagine the devastation and decay on the ground, nothing was as shocking as seeing it with their own eyes.

Lin Xi described in the narration: "Gengyang is relatively close to our Dawn Base and is in a low-risk area. The city is well preserved, while the situation in other cities is much worse."

The moving, transparent carriage was full of people, which quickly attracted the attention of nearby zombies.

"Zombies! Zombies are coming!"

The staff were no strangers to zombies; there were several in the lab, though they were research subjects that were tightly bound.

Now, zombies with bared teeth and claws are chasing after the train carriages. People are panicked but not truly afraid, even through the glass.

Liang Hui gave the driver a wink, and the car gradually slowed down.

The zombies in the distance drew closer and closer to the carriage until they lay on the glass, licking it with contorted expressions.

People sitting close to the glass looked terrified and tried to unbuckle their seatbelts to get away.

Lin Xi quickly stopped him: "Don't unbuckle your seatbelt, you'll be easily injured when the truck accelerates and brakes suddenly."

"Damn it! Drive faster! There are several zombies coming over there." Zhou Yiheng cursed as he sat by the glass.

Lin Xi waved his hand, and the car slowed down even more. The zombies that appeared one after another were attracted by the living person inside the glass and surrounded the glass car. Some of the high-level zombies even climbed onto the roof of the car by stepping on the heads of the zombies.

Screams erupted inside the car; they were separated from the zombies only by a pane of glass.

But the car has bulletproof glass, so Lin Xi knows it's absolutely safe inside.

She waved her hand, and the truck sped off, shaking the helpless zombies off the roof of the truck.

The car began to accelerate, and after creating some distance between itself and the zombies, it maintained a certain speed. Everyone watched in horror as the zombies chased after the car.

"What exactly is the poisonous jellyfish trying to do?!" someone in the crowd discussed.

This was the first time Lin Xi had heard her other nickname, but she didn't care. Seeing that everyone was focused on looking out of the car, this was a good opportunity. Lin Xi said, "Two o'clock, one ordinary zombie."

Liang Hui walked towards the back of the carriage. A window slowly opened, letting in a draft of air. Liang Hui extended his gun. A shot to the head would kill an ordinary zombie, but Liang Hui's marksmanship was perfect.

Lin Xi: "Directly behind, a hardened skeleton zombie."

Liang Hui and two other combat team members fired at the same time, but the hardened bone zombie was only pierced by bullets. It paused for a moment and continued to chase. Several holes were pierced through the skin on its head, but the bullets could not penetrate its skull.

Around the seventh bullet, one hit the hardened zombie in the eye, finally blowing its head off through the eye and causing it to fall to the ground. But there was still a group of hardened zombies behind it.

Lin Xi spoke again: "The next zombie to appear is a hardened zombie."

The zombie's bones had hardened, and even its skin and eyelids had hardened. Where a shot into the eye socket would normally result in a headshot, now you had to avoid the eyelid and hit the eyeball itself, requiring even greater marksmanship; a headshot was extremely difficult.

Liang Hui directed the combat personnel to switch weapons and demonstrate their abilities, but they were unable to defeat the zombies.

The vehicles pulled even further apart. Liang Hui directed the combat vehicle next to him to fire its cannon. Explosions rang out, and several zombies were sent flying. However, their bodies hardened and they did not break apart. They got up and continued to chase the vehicles.

Everyone stared in disbelief at the stubborn, hardened zombie.

Only a small number of zombies engulfed in flames actually died because the virus was inactivated by the high temperature.
