Chapter 240 Escape from the Watchtower

Chapter 240 Escape from the Watchtower

With a final roar, the earth trembled violently, and the original site of the Watchtower base caused the surrounding land to collapse into a huge depression.

Vehicles that arrived late couldn't find a smooth road surface and, as they swayed, fell into a crack in the ground.

Of the few pure-blooded humans remaining in the Watchtower, only a handful escaped; the rest were buried in the earth along with the zombies and semi-infected who had taken over almost the entire base.

Most of the base's high-ranking officers were successfully transferred by transportation under the escort of the military; most of these people were partially infected.

Although they were far enough away from the watchtower to avoid the blast wave, they were still in danger of encountering hardened zombies outside the base. This ordinary, unmodified car was no match for hardened zombies.

Xiang Xin calmed down from his excitement, reached out to take out his tools to investigate the situation and ensure the safe passage of the vehicle.

Unfortunately, there was nothing in the pockets of the prison uniform and the ita bag. Her brother Lu and San San only took a cooler with them when they escaped, so it didn't seem like they had any extra tools.

"Sigh... This time it was really too rushed, I didn't bring anything." Xiang Xin could only observe the situation with her naked eye.

Lin Xi was also a little unsure. In the past, she had always used her truck to escape, with Lu Wei's professional equipment and the abundant supplies she had prepared. Unlike now, this truck only had some tissues in it.

But she tried to reassure Dao Xin: "It's okay, I've already brought the most important things."

She glanced at the two of them in the rearview mirror.

Xiang Xin realized what was happening and stretched her hand forward, but not wanting to interfere with Lin Xi's driving, she could only agree verbally, "That's right! It's good that we're still together."

Lin Xi: "Have we forgotten something?"

Xiang Xin: "What?" Although she didn't say it aloud, she leaned closer to Lu Wei and asked.

Lin Xi also asked, "Have you made contact?"

Her voice trembled slightly, not from fear or panic, but because it was so cold; she was only wearing an undershirt.

Having lived underground for many years, Lin Xi had almost forgotten the temperature on the surface in February.

The temperature at the base is maintained at 15-20 degrees Celsius year-round, so people generally only need to wear a base layer and a jacket.

To make it easier to escape, Lin Xi had just dropped her lab coat. She had worked up a sweat climbing pipes and repairing the car, so she was more sensitive to the cold air than usual.

The whole escape had caused an adrenaline rush that made me temporarily ignore the cold. But once I was out of danger and calmed down, I suddenly felt a shiver.

The car has an air conditioning function.

Lu Wei, holding a miniature communication device, said, "One more hour."

Lin Xi felt a chill run down her spine as she looked at the meager amount of oil left—it could barely last an hour.

If they are lucky enough not to encounter complicated road conditions or hordes of zombies, they can safely reunite by steadily moving in the agreed direction.

Lu Wei watched as Lin Xi removed her finger from the air conditioner switch, then realized something and took off his coat to cover her.

Lin Xi froze for a moment: "It's blocking the seatbelt."

Lu Wei: "It's okay, there won't be a fine now."

Although it was just a thin spring/autumn jacket, it did ward off some of the chill.

Now Lu Wei was only wearing a shirt.

"you……"

"I'm not cold."

Lu Wei has been a semi-infected person for a year now, and his body temperature has dropped along with his vital signs, which is already lower than that of a normal person.

Lin Xi's research on semi-infected individuals in the laboratory revealed that more than half of the infected individuals were more adaptable to body temperature than humans.

Lin Xi drove silently, while Lu Weize fiddled with the instruments beside him, reporting what had just happened to the relevant departments.

Several cars that had escaped the base with Lin Xi were still heading in the same direction. They seemed to want to travel together to cope with the complex apocalyptic situation, and slowly formed a convoy with their hazard lights flashing.

Lin Xi's car was right in the middle of the group of cars. The narrow road with obstacles made it unsuitable for overtaking, so Lin Xi could only follow the convoy at a constant speed.

Fortunately, the direction they were heading was the same as their destination.

The city in the distance looked somewhat different from the one Lin Xi had seen last time. If it was a quiet, chaotic place before, it was now a war-torn, dilapidated city with traces of bombs everywhere.

The war was not large-scale and seemed to be taking place away from the roads, but looking at the city's dilapidated state, Lin Xi was still worried about the road conditions.

Just as I was thinking this, the convoy began to slow down until all the cars stopped. After everyone watched for a while, some people started getting out of the cars.

The road ahead is blocked by concrete slabs and stones; the obstructions must be cleared.

Military personnel often encounter this kind of situation when traveling. These individuals believed they were more capable than ordinary people and that they should be the first to get off the vehicle.

But Lin Xi recalled the scene of evacuating from the White Shield base. They encountered a horde of zombies while clearing roadblocks, and it was at that time that Lu Wei was infected.

If everyone waits for someone else to rescue them, they'll all be trapped here and die sooner or later.

Before getting out of the car, Lu Wei opened the car door and said to Lin Xi and Xiang Xin, who were also preparing to get out, "Don't move here."

He glanced meaningfully at the refrigerator and then gave Xiang Xin a look.

Xiang Xin nodded firmly.

Lin Xi didn't understand their cryptic conversation.

With one person taking the lead, people from other vehicles gradually got out to help, since everyone knows that parking in the wild can easily lead to danger.

"In my opinion, we should run alongside the military vehicles; that would ensure our safety."

"Stop talking! Aren't the half-infected and zombies their creation? Following them will probably only be more dangerous!"

"Exactly, who knows if they'll capture us and experiment on us? I'm still a pure human."

"Speaking of conducting experiments, when I escaped, I heard that the scientist who created the half-infected also ran away, and the base is looking for him."

"That damned old man, it's all because he created these half-infected people."

"It's not an old man. I heard that scientist is a woman."

"Never mind that, where should we go now?"

"..."

There weren't many roadblocks, and after a quick clearing, the convoy continued its journey.

Everyone was wandering aimlessly through the wasteland, except for Lin Xi's vehicle; no one else knew where to go.

Fifty minutes later, Lin Xi's car sounded the fuel tank warning light.

Suddenly, a whooshing sound came from above.

Xiang Xin: "Three helicopters are coming."

Some cars in the convoy thought they were there to help everyone and excitedly turned on their hazard lights.

The helicopters came to a steady stop above the convoy. One of the helicopters slowly descended at the front of the convoy, opened its door, and it seemed that soldiers were about to disembark.

The noise from the propeller attracted the zombies lurking nearby.

Lin Xi frowned: "They're definitely not here to rescue people, they're here to arrest us."

Xiang Xin nodded, then shook her head: "They're not arresting us, they're arresting you."

Lin Xi glared at her but ignored her: "The helicopter followed us all the way here. I suspect there's a tracking device in the car."

Perhaps these vehicles were all equipped with GPS trackers after entering the base, making it easier for the base to monitor their movements.

The soldiers were slowly descending, and military trucks were chasing after them.

Lin Xi's car ran out of gas, and Lin Xi turned to look at Lu Wei.

They reached a consensus: "Abandon the car, and we can meet up in about 2 kilometers."

They activated cruise control, moved their positions, opened the doors at an intersection, jumped out of the car, and quickly entered the bombed-out city ruins.
