Chapter 37 Invasion

Chapter 37 Invasion

The glaring sunlight shone through the privacy glass, casting an intense heat over the sunroom, making it feel like a sauna.

But there were living people both inside and outside the steamer.

Yang Xin and his wife were lying on the roof. They had lost a lot of weight in the few days they hadn't seen each other. Their once sallow and haggard faces were now flushed red from the sun, which also made them feel dizzy.

They were bound to faint. Lin Xi calculated the time, estimating that although they had plundered other people's supplies, they still had a large family to support, and their resources were limited. They would soon run out of money by the time they had finished living off their savings.

Moreover, with the water and electricity cut off, survival has become even more difficult.

Lin Xi was watering the vegetables with the water that they had contaminated a few days ago. Even if the water had been filtered, Lin Xi would not have used it, since there was plenty of water stored at home anyway.

Looking up at the two people on the roof, she worried that they might faint from heatstroke due to weakness, which would look a bit creepy. Moreover, even if they were extremely thin, they would still block some of the solar panels from receiving sunlight.

She couldn't help but wonder what kind of mischievous prank the couple had come up with this time, that they would come to her house in broad daylight despite the scorching sun and the risk of being targeted by zombies.

Then, under Lin Xi's gaze, the two slowly took out a wad of black plastic film and unfolded it.

Suddenly, everything went dark. The sunlight was blocked by the black plastic sheeting that covered the entire sunroom. The burning sensation on my skin suddenly eased, and the whole sunroom was shrouded in shadow.

They were even afraid that the plastic sheeting wouldn't cover everything on the roof, so they tied the black sheeting tightly to the security bars, making sure it was completely sealed so that not a single ray of sunlight could get in.

Lin Xi rubbed her forehead, speechless for a long time.

In the post-apocalyptic world, when survival is impossible, people will not only kill each other to seize resources, but also do things that harm others without benefiting themselves.

If you can't eat or drink, you can't expect others to live well either.

If everyone did this, humans would be wiped out by killing each other without even having to wait for zombies to exterminate them.

This is outrageous!

Although Lin Xi couldn't go out to take revenge on those villains, it was still easy to prevent them from succeeding since someone had come to her door.

She rushed to the kitchen, grabbed a lighter, opened the skylight, and lit the black film.

Anyway, since this black film is stuck to the security bars, it won't affect her solar panels if it burns. There are no flammable materials on the roof, so it won't develop into a big fire.

A tiny spark shone on the thin black plastic film, and the small hole it left behind instantly blossomed like a flower, gradually spreading into a wildfire, and sunlight once again assaulted the eyes.

As the flames reached Yang Xin's trouser leg, he was bowing his head and tying the last knot.

His intention was to firmly cover the security bars with the black film, but he was caught off guard and burned his calf. Looking down, he saw that the flames were burning all the way up from his trouser leg.

"Ah!! Help!!!" Yang Xin sprang up suddenly, raising his leg high and jumping up, almost slipping off the roof.

He kicked off a few tiles from the roof of Fu Minjun's house, and the sound of tiles breaking came from downstairs. Instantly, several convulsing figures emerged.

Yang Xin screamed and cried out as he was burned, his voice amplified by fear and pain: "Xiaoyue, Xiaoyue, help me!"

The zombie, its already stiff neck raised, saw the figure above and its eyes turned bloodshot as it bared its teeth and claws.

Xiaoyue glanced at Yang Xin, who was on fire, then looked down at the building below, and turned and ran.

Lin Xi followed "Xiao Yue's" gaze downwards. The zombie downstairs looked back and forth a few times, then reached out and grabbed the security window on the first floor. It climbed up the security window and even knew to move and adjust its angle to reach the security window on the second floor.

Like humans, they can think, and even if their bodies are uncoordinated, they will try their best to overcome it to achieve their goals.

Lin Xi stared wide-eyed at the zombie, while Yang Xin, who had been jumping and shouting beside her, slapped out the fire on his pants, came to his senses, and glared at Lin Xi, who had finally opened the window and appeared, his eyes filled with resentment and anger.

Lin Xi glared back without fear and slowly raised her middle finger.

The climbing sounds outside grew closer, so Lin Xi closed the skylight and shrank back inside. Through the one-way privacy glass of her apartment, she saw a zombie clinging to her security bars and crawling away.

Yang Xin had already climbed back onto the roof of Fu Minjun's house and was anxiously banging on the skylight. But just now, "Xiaoyue" saw the zombies climbing up and ran away in fright, closing the skylight and cutting off his escape route.

Yang Xin gritted his teeth and cursed, "You bitch!"

Seeing that the zombies were about to crawl over, he raised his hand, clenched his fist, and slammed it into the glass. The glass was ordinary glass, but it shattered instantly under the force of the blow.

Ignoring the shards of glass scattered on the ground, Yang Xin jumped down before the zombie could grab his ankle, and blood immediately gushed from the broken glass.

Because Lin Xi's house was well soundproofed, she couldn't hear the screams outside, so she locked the skylight and went downstairs to the monitor screen.

The security camera outside her house was focused on the Minjun family's house, and they saw Xiaoyue burst out of the door and head straight downstairs.

Gu Lanjuan's voice followed: "Xiaoyue, why are you running? Old man, go upstairs and see what happened to the broken window upstairs."

Xiaoyue went down a few steps, then suddenly remembered something, ran back up, slammed Gu Lanjuan's door shut, and went downstairs again.

Lin Xi saw Xiao Yue banging on the door of 202 where her parents lived on the second floor and pulling them into Gu Lanjuan's house. It seemed that she thought she could not stop the zombies and pulled her parents into 201 where there were supplies, intending to spend the end of the world with her flesh and blood relatives.

On the monitor, the door to room 302 remained motionless, but there were sounds coming from inside. Since the door was closed, Lin Xi couldn't hear the sounds inside clearly, only vaguely hearing the sounds of banging, crying, and hurried, chaotic footsteps.

Suddenly the door opened, and Yang Xin, covered in blood, rushed out, ran to the second floor, and used his key to open the door to room 201.

The zombie that had climbed up the security window from the first floor to the roof and then entered through the skylight appeared at the door. Its green eyes and rotting face were covered with blood.

The source of that bright red blood was the zombie's mouth.

It seems someone perished in 302.

Lin Xi felt a tightness in her chest.

First, she discovered that the zombies had evolved, transforming from their original dull and rigid state into beings with observational and cognitive abilities—a devastating blow to her and everyone else. Even more pressing was the emergence of zombies within the sealed-off building.

The zombie followed the trail of blood to the second floor.

On the screen, the door opposite swayed slightly, and a trembling hand gripped the door frame. Only two fingers remained intact; the other three had been bitten off to varying lengths, and dark red blood trickled down the edge of the door frame from the gap.

The owner of the fingers gradually revealed her entire body—Gu Lanjuan, with half of her intestines hanging from her. She was convulsing, rolling her eyes, and uncontrollably flicking her tongue wildly. Her eyes were sometimes clear and sometimes cloudy, and she was turning into a zombie.
