Chapter 68 Testing
The night was deep and quiet.
Dozens of eyes were fixed on Lin Xi's house, or more precisely, on the top of the "birdcage".
Even Lin Xi himself put down his binoculars and looked up to observe the top of his birdcage up close—
A figure was crawling in the shadows outside the railing. If Lin Xi hadn't seen Lin Jie and a group of villagers walking towards her house through her binoculars, she might have mistaken this strangely moving and uncoordinated figure for a zombie.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone, Lin Jie clumsily climbed the security bars surrounding Lin Xi's house, almost reaching the height of the glass wall to explore the inside of the courtyard.
interesting.
Lin Jie is both funny and smart.
The villagers urged him to come and find out what was going on, and he actually came.
Little did they know that Lin Jie and Zhang Xiulan had a different plan:
As the saying goes, "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down."
Another saying goes, first come, first served.
Lin Jie thought that if he seized the opportunity to find a loophole in Lin Xi's house and broke in, Lin Xi, a girl who was powerless, would definitely not be able to beat him. He would then drive Lin Xi away or kill her, and bring his own family in to seize the house.
This land originally belonged to the Lin family, but it was occupied by him, the eldest grandson of the Lin family's eldest branch. This is justifiable both in terms of name and reason.
Even with Zhuang Changdong's silver tongue, there was nothing he could do.
They will use this big house to defend against outsiders and zombies.
Little did they know... Little did they know...
Lin Jie had just climbed to the top and crossed the glass wall when he was splashed with water as he was about to peek into the courtyard below.
"Damn it!!!" Lin Jie was caught off guard and was splashed with water. He was so startled that his hand trembled and he almost fell from the height.
His angry shout, tinged with fear, came from instinct and was so loud that it almost echoed across the quiet field.
Upon seeing this, the surrounding villagers, fearing that the shouts would attract zombies, quietly dispersed and ran home.
Lin Jie realized this as well and nervously looked around.
He's now perched on the railing, high up, with a wider field of vision.
With one hand firmly gripping the railing and the other shielding his face from the splashing water, Lin Jie turned his head slightly and saw a shadowy figure moving in the darkness.
After gradually getting used to the feel of the water spraying on his body, Lin Jie looked down to check the source of the water—
Lin Xi was standing below, holding a water hose and spraying water.
This water pipe comes from the garage and was originally used for washing cars, but now it's also suitable for striking down malicious people through the fence.
Lin Xi only regretted that the water pressure wasn't high enough; by the time the water reached the top of the railing, it had already dispersed into sprays, only obstructing some of his view and not causing him any real harm.
If you use a high-pressure water gun instead, it would be better to aim it directly at the enemy and spray them away.
However, even though the splash didn't get Lin Jiezi out of the water, it made him panic at the top. No matter which direction he moved, Lin Xi could adjust the angle in time to continue to cause him trouble.
Lin Jie was caught in a dilemma. He couldn't jump down now because the commotion he had just witnessed likely meant that zombies were lurking around, and if he jumped down now, he would be caught red-handed by them.
But Lin Jie didn't sit idly by and wait to die. He waved his hands repeatedly to Lin Xi to indicate his surrender and begged for mercy in a low voice: "The zombies are coming, stop for a moment! I'll leave after the zombies are gone, I promise I won't do anything to hurt you!!"
Lin Xi put down the water pipe for the time being, looked up with a disdainful expression: "You were never going to do anything to hurt me anyway."
What a joke! This is her home, she's in a safe zone. Lin Jie should be the one worrying about her trying to kill him.
Although Lin Jie was greedy and foolish, he knew when to advance and when to retreat. Just like how he dealt with Lin Cheng before being unsure whether the injured Lin Cheng was infected with the zombie virus, he quickly made the choice to protect himself this time, disregarding his pride and begging for mercy in a low voice.
"Please, have mercy, stop making any more noise! I beg you, you're really my great-aunt..."
Lin Jie was spouting a bunch of things that gave people goosebumps, a stark contrast to the man who had just boasted to the villagers that he would drive Lin Xi out to avenge the theft of her house.
Anyway, the villagers have all gone home now, and he doesn't speak loudly, so no one knows how pathetic he looks.
Lin Xi narrowed her eyes, picked up the hose, and went back.
Having lived through several lifetimes, she knew that if she always stayed at home, she would only be bullied. She knew that one should fight back against those who had ill intentions towards her.
But Lin Jie hadn't actually killed her yet, and he didn't have the ability to do so, so she created some crises for Lin Jie and then let go.
Whether the zombies outside will spare Lin Jie is up to fate.
People will climb the security bars around her house, and so will zombies.
In her previous life, she had witnessed a zombie climb from the first floor to the top floor along the security window of a residential building.
Going back one lifetime, after the sunroom in her attic was smashed, Fu Minjun, who had turned into a zombie, also climbed over the stairs.
Just because Lin Xi let Lin Jie go doesn't mean he can go home safely.
She put away her water gun and went home. Like the other villagers who had already arrived home, everyone's eyes were fixed on the top of Lin Xi's "birdcage".
Three dark figures were drawn to the vicinity of the "birdcage" by the commotion. Since no new sounds were heard, the zombies temporarily lost their target in the darkness and wandered around the area.
One of them was Lin Cheng.
The corpse, with its internal organs exposed, decomposed beyond recognition under the scorching heat of midsummer, with wriggling maggots clinging to the blackened, rotting flesh.
If Lin Xi were still in the courtyard, she would definitely be able to smell that overwhelming stench.
Lin Jie looked at Lin Cheng tremblingly, hugging the railing tightly to stop shaking and avoid making a sound.
After a while, the zombies, unable to track their target, wandered aimlessly into the vicinity.
Lin Jie was lucky to survive.
Seeing that the crisis had passed, Lin Xi went to the bathroom to take a shower. After she finished drying her hair and looked outside, Lin Jie was still hanging on the railing.
"..."
It must be said that Lin Jie and she, as a Taurus who dislikes adventure, have some similarities; they only dare to go out after confirming that the environment is completely safe.
Lin Jie waited until dawn, making sure the zombies were far away, before rushing home.
-
The following night, a group of people gathered again in Zhang Xiulan's yard to plot their scheme.
Lin Jie stared wide-eyed, his voice not loud but his gestures exaggerated: "That brat is alive and well, and the vegetables in the yard are growing so tall!"
Villager: Really?
Lin Jie: "I saw it with my own eyes, how could it be fake?"
Zhuang Changdong: "Did that girl say anything when she saw you yesterday?"
Lin Jie's gaze shifted, and after a pause, he raised an eyebrow and said, "Her? She was terrified when she saw me. If she hadn't splashed water and startled me, attracting the zombies, I would have opened her door long ago."
"..."
The villagers thought that Lin Jie's shout yesterday didn't seem like he had startled Lin Xi, but rather Lin Xi had startled him.
But Zhuang Changdong didn't care and continued to ask, "Is the top also full of railings? Are there any loopholes to exploit?"
This scene, along with the visuals and audio, was transmitted to Lin Xi via drone.
Seeing the villagers eager to try their luck at Lin Jie's urging, Lin Xi clenched his fists.
Even if you don't go out and confront them directly, you have to do something to let everyone know that you're not someone to mess with.
