Chapter 98 I Won't Let You Run Away
Lin Xi quietly opened the door.
The long corridor was covered with bloody footprints, and most of the zombies were at the door of a cell at the end.
"Ahhh... Huff..." Xiang Xin screamed for a long time, then gasped for breath and continued to scream, "Ah..."
In order to prevent prisoners from escaping or harming themselves or others, there were no tools available to fight off the zombies in the cell. It would be too dangerous to fight so many zombies with bare hands when one arm was injured.
Lin Xi's gaze locked onto a police baton stained with blood.
Two zombies were still between Lin Xi and the police baton. They didn't head towards Xiang Xin's cell, but were still attracted by the living people in the other cells.
"Ping ping...bang bang..." There was also noise coming from that cell; they were arguing about whether or not to help Lin Xi.
Both ends...
Lin Xi held the key in her hand and quietly walked away.
The people in the cell saw a living person appear in their line of sight during the argument, and their eyes widened suddenly.
Before the zombie could turn around, Lin Xi slammed the sharp end of the key into the zombie's head.
The zombies writhed in pain, trying to turn around. Lin Xi quickly pulled out the key and stabbed each one three times, watching them fall to the ground before picking up the baton.
Xiang Xin was already out of breath, and her cries weakened as she tried her best to attract the zombies clinging to the railing.
There are nine zombies there. If Lin Xi were to face nine zombies head-on in this not-so-wide passage, his chances of winning would be very slim. Even if he could defeat them, he might still get scratched.
She crept stealthily toward Xiang Xin's cell, baton in hand.
The zombies all had their backs to them.
This was the first time Lin Xi had faced so many zombies head-on. It was different from the situation when he killed nine "people" at Hongwen Hospital. Some of those nine were infected, and they were more scattered and easier to take down.
If we can't kill this whole group at once, what if they get devoured alive?
Her heart was pounding.
Through the throng of zombie heads, Xiang Xin also saw Lin Xi.
Her eyes suddenly lit up, as if she had seen the dawn. Her previously intermittent cries suddenly rose in pitch, as if she were cheering someone on.
Lin Xi and she exchanged a glance, gripped the baton tightly, and with lightning speed, struck the zombie on the back of the head with each blow.
Some of the two ends were still struggling and moving, so Lin Xi quickly added two more blows.
Only after confirming that all the zombies had collapsed and lost their ability to move did Lin Xi dare to breathe heavily.
Xiang Xin jumped up excitedly in the cell: "Great, Coach Lin! I knew you could do it!"
Having survived a brief ordeal, Lin Xi smiled.
It feels so good to be recognized.
The lock on Xiang Xin's cell door clicked open, and Xiang Xin eagerly pushed the door open and went out.
However, the other three people in the cell remained huddled in the corner, motionless.
Xiang Xin asked them, "What are you waiting for? Come out quickly!"
The three looked at each other, then shook their heads in unison.
One of them said to Lin Xi, "Could you please lock the door again?"
In case any more zombies get in, the door can keep them out.
Xiang Xin was very puzzled: "The police officers here have all turned into zombies. No one has brought us food all day. If you don't run away, you will starve to death here!"
The person replied, "I'd rather starve to death in a safe place than be bitten to death by zombies."
The other two nodded in agreement.
Xiang Xin: "Why would you think that? If we don't run, we'll definitely die here. If we escape, we might survive!"
Lin Xi tugged at Xiang Xin: "Let's go quickly."
She could understand those three people's thoughts; she herself had once been someone who would rather starve to death at home than dare to step out of the house.
After running out of the women's cell, I found zombies roaming everywhere in the detention center lobby.
Several zombie corpses lay on the ground, indicating that a battle had taken place here.
Lin Xi and Xiang Xin crouched behind the cabinet, observing the situation.
Xiang Xin glanced at the zombies, made a knife gesture with his hand and made a cut across their necks, then looked at Lin Xi with his eyes and asked: "Have you done with them all?"
Lin Xi shook her head and gestured towards the door: Let's escape first.
Outnumbered and outgunned, Lin Xi's fighting strength was already weakened by having an injured arm in a sling.
The strength of Xiang Xin beside him is unknown. Three months ago, Xiang Xin was a student in the beginner class of the martial arts school. It is unknown what level he has reached now.
And they had no weapons.
Lin Xi glanced around the hall floor, trying to find a weapon.
There was also a police baton on the ground, which Xiang Xin could use for self-defense.
From their perspective, they could see some of the situation outside the door: there was blood on the ground, no one on the street, only one or two zombies occasionally wandering by; they didn't know where the other people and zombies were.
Lin Xi is assessing escape methods and planning what will happen after she escapes.
She practiced Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) diligently, and on her way to the hospital, she also considered what to do if the operation failed and the zombie outbreak still occurred.
She prepared an emergency suitcase and stored it in the coffee shop across from the hospital. If the operation failed and a large-scale zombie outbreak occurred, she would run away, prioritize survival, and then think of other solutions.
But in that situation, the streets were mostly filled with people running away, not with wandering zombies like they are now.
"Bang!"
Just as Lin Xi hesitated, a gunshot rang out.
A zombie fell to the ground with a thud.
Attracted by the gunshots, the other zombies rushed toward the source of the sound.
Lin Xi peeked out from under the cabinet and saw a group of people, mainly Uncle Hat, approaching with guns.
The zombies fell to the ground one after another.
Great! Reinforcements have arrived!
Lin Xi wanted to join the fight, but the police officers were already firing shots. Standing up and joining the fight at this time would not bring any benefit and would only make it more difficult for the police officers to aim.
Xiang Xin was very excited and whispered, "That's great! Uncle Hat is such a reassuring person!"
However, after dealing with the zombies in the hall, the uncles in hats went to the men's and women's cells respectively.
Before Xiang Xin could even feel a sense of relief, Uncle Hat caught her and Lin Xi together.
“S-002 and C-678 escaped without permission.” The officer reached down and touched his waist, finding no handcuffs he usually wore.
Lin Xi: "..."
"Shen Hua, go check on the other survivors first. I'll keep an eye on things here." A familiar voice rang out.
It was indeed Lu Wei; he was also carrying a gun.
Shen Hua glanced at Lu Wei with concern, then looked at the lookout in the distance, before finally going to do something more important—
Sweep away the zombies in the detention center and check the prisoners' conditions.
Lin Xi breathed a sigh of relief, wiped her sweat, and said, "Tai, do you know what I was thinking when the alarm went off just now? I was thinking, 'Why are you still a plague god? Every time you show up, it's going to kill me.'"
Lu Wei: "..." He simply held his gun and observed the situation just like the two police officers at the door.
Seeing that she had escaped being handcuffed, Xiang Xin said to Lu Weixin, "That's great, Lawyer Lu! Coach Lin and I were just wondering how to run away."
"Run away? We won't let you escape." Captain Shen finished inspecting the situation and overheard the two escapees mentioning "running away."
