Chapter 146 Isolation Room
When Lin Xi held a knife in her left hand and a fire extinguisher in her right, everyone moved a step away from her, including Cheng Ling.
The zombies outside had just mutated and were still fresh and warm, their blood hadn't completely stopped flowing, so Lin Xi was covered in mottled bloodstains after the fight.
It not only reeks of blood, but it's also quite eerie.
But Lin Xi didn't care about her image; she looked around.
The isolation room is a buffer zone before leaving the laboratory, with a disinfection room and a changing room, followed by the isolation rest area where everyone is now staying.
For security and confidentiality reasons, the password for the door between the isolation room and the laboratory is changed every hour, so everyone here is waiting to receive the new password on the hour, which is why they are trapped here.
The colleague named Li Jun had mutated into the appearance of a zombie. Two male colleagues were dealing with them, but the two were unarmed and had no fighting experience. To say they were dealing with them was actually just the two of them struggling with a zombie.
Lin Xi stepped forward and swiftly plunged her knife into the back of the zombie's head.
Li Jun collapsed to the ground, convulsing. Lin Xi did not stop immediately, but instead pulled someone out of the crowd.
The man was initially stunned as he stared at Lin Xiza's zombie head, but was suddenly pulled out and was startled: "W-what are you doing?!"
Lin Xi brandished the dagger in his hand.
The man wasn't afraid; instead, he looked completely bewildered: "What do you mean!?"
The infected person seized the opportunity to question Lin Xi, who hesitated for a second. But Lin Xi hesitated for only a second before stabbing down with her knife, and bright red blood spurted out.
The person who fell to the ground twitched twice, staring at Lin Xi with terrified eyes, before his gaze gradually became unfocused.
"Ah!" someone screamed.
The zombies outside the frosted glass felt their blood boil at the sound of human voices, and the shadowy figures danced even more wildly.
Lin Xi said in a serious voice, "If you don't want to attract zombies, keep your voice down."
She glanced at the overhead light and decided to turn it off to make the zombies outside lose their target and leave. But there was one more important thing.
Lin Xi glanced around at the crowd. They had witnessed Lin Xi's actions earlier and were now huddled together against the wall in fear.
"You killed someone..." Cheng Ling stated a fact in an incredulous tone.
These people had just come into close contact with zombies and were all panicked and somewhat abnormal. Lin Xi could not immediately see anything wrong with them.
Lin Xi pointed to the infected person who had been killed on the ground: "She was already infected. Look at her neck."
The veins on the neck have bulged out and turned green, and in some places they have turned black, clearly indicating that it is undergoing a mutation process.
"Even so, you can't just kill her! She's still alive!" someone questioned.
Lin Xi knew that the person she killed was a colleague she worked with day and night. Before witnessing the terrifying scene of a zombie killing someone, everyone's understanding of zombies was still very shallow.
Just like the 001-003 in the laboratory who haven't been declared dead yet, the research institute still treats them as patients, trying to analyze the virus and find a way to save them.
But she didn't have time to explain, and directly waved the knife in her hand, demanding, "The person who just drank the milk, please step forward."
Upon hearing this, some people were puzzled, some were afraid, and some were disdainful; everyone's expression changed for a moment.
"What do you mean? Drinking milk will turn you into a zombie?"
Lin Xi: "The virus can be transmitted orally and is not resistant to high temperatures."
She pointed to the glass door: "The mutated ones outside are all our colleagues, while the people inside are fine. The sandwiches and eggs are all cooked and baked by the cafeteria itself. If we were poisoned, the most likely food to be affected would be the chilled fresh milk."
Lin Xi glanced at her watch: "I wasted another minute talking. Mutation waits for no one. Those who have drunk the milk, step forward now."
Everyone looked at each other, and no one stepped forward; instead, they took a step back.
Some people even whispered, "Did you just drink milk?"
"I didn't! You're the one who drank it!"
"I am allergic to dairy products, and I never drink milk."
Lin Xi glanced at the person, who lowered their head to avoid her gaze: "Why should whatever she says be the truth! Maybe there are other reasons for the infection!"
Another person hiding in the crowd jumped out: "That's right! To be killed for drinking milk is such an injustice!"
When someone cheers, others will follow suit; those who have drunk the milk are all arguing for their rights.
Those who didn't drink milk have gradually distanced themselves from Lin Xi and split into two factions, but even so, those who didn't drink fresh milk haven't completely sided with Lin Xi.
Cheng Ling asked, "What you say makes sense, but it hasn't been tested by the virus, there's no concrete evidence. You can't just kill them like that."
Lin Xi: "The lab door won't open for another 30 minutes. By the time we go in to take samples and test the virus, the mutation will have already occurred. We don't have that much time."
She felt the questioning and resentful looks from everyone, and coughed lightly: "I can't see any signs of infection in them yet, so I won't kill them immediately. Since you don't believe me, how about we tie up the people who drank the milk and observe them until the lab door opens, then send them in for testing?"
This is a compromise.
Humans are social animals after all. We have all lived together in a society governed by the rule of law for so many years, so it is impossible for us to accept the fact that someone committed murder all at once.
Although those who had drunk the milk had their opinions, they understood everyone's thoughts and accepted being bound by the rules.
Many hands make light work; in just a few minutes, the hands of the five people were tied. Since everyone was wearing masks, they didn't need to add an extra layer of protection to their mouths.
One of the girls who helped Lin Xi tie up the person hesitated and whispered, "Junior sister...actually, I...I have a stomachache today and can't drink anything cold. I only took a small sip. It should be fine, right?"
"I can't guarantee that." Lin Xi, being fair and impartial, also tied up the girl's hands.
Lin Xi added, "Everyone, quickly take out the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs and give them to them; it might help."
The concentration of the virus in the milk must be quite high, to the point that many of my colleagues outside have already turned into zombies. But if someone drinks less, they might not ingest much virus and could still be saved. If they take some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs before the mutation begins, they might be able to survive.
In just a few minutes, Lin Xi won everyone over with her strength and her analysis. As soon as she said that, everyone started to do as she said.
After doing all this, Lin Xi turned off the lights in the isolation room, and everyone anxiously awaited the results in the darkness.
"Huang Jiawei, have you mutated?"
"I didn't."
"Neither do I."
"I feel a little hot..."
Gunfire shattered the whispers; reinforcements had arrived.
