Chapter 1016: Hanging the Red Lanterns High
The matter of the An family did not affect the New Year atmosphere in the Weiyuan Palace.
On the 22nd day of the 12th lunar month, the servants in the palace began to hang up lanterns and decorations. Daozi and Xiao Moleng were on their way back to the main courtyard after practicing boxing when they saw someone hanging red lanterns. Out of curiosity, they went over to take a look.
Seeing the red lanterns hanging under the eaves, Daozi became interested and said to the servant, "Give me the lantern, I want to try it too."
The servants didn't dare to give the lantern to Daozi: "Young prince, it is very dangerous to hang a lantern. We dare not let you take the risk." If anything happened to the young prince, they couldn't afford to pay for it even if they had ten brains.
Daozi looked unhappy: "You lied to me, I just saw you guys die, it was obviously very simple."
The servant smiled wryly and replied, "My young prince, it looks easy to you because I am a servant who does this job and I am already very skilled at it. But you are still young. If you don't hold the ladder firmly, you will fall down."
Daozi was most displeased when others said he was too young. Seeing that the servants did not listen to him, he became very angry and said, "Just wait, I will tell my mother that you did not listen to me."
Having said that, he pulled Xiao Morong to the main courtyard.
On the way, Xiao Morong saw Daozi pouting and said with a smile, "Those servants were doing this for your own good. Not to mention you're so young, even I wouldn't allow you to do such dangerous things at home."
Daozi frowned, with a look of deep displeasure on his face: "But I just want to try it."
As they were talking, they arrived at the main courtyard.
Daozi ran into the house quickly and saw Daohua sitting on the couch beside the bed looking at the gift list. He ran to her side and said aggrievedly, "Mother, the servants in the mansion don't listen to me, the little prince."
Daohua shifted her gaze from the gift list to Daozi and asked calmly, "What do you want to do now?"
The servants in the mansion dared not treat their son badly unless he was going to do something "bad" again.
Daozi pouted and said, "Mom, I want to hang red lanterns, but they won't let me."
Rice Flower looked at Rice: "Then why do you think they didn't let you hang it?"
Rice snorted and said, "They say hanging lanterns is dangerous, but I clearly watched them hang the process, it's very simple." As he said that, he shook Rice Flower's arm.
"Mom, I want to hang lanterns."
Daohua knows that children’s curiosity cannot be suppressed blindly. Otherwise, the more you forbid them to do something, the more they will want to do it. If you refuse them this time, they may secretly try it next time when they encounter something they are curious about.
After thinking for a while, Daohua said, "The eaves of our house are several times higher than you. If you fall from it, it will be very painful. Do you still want to try it?"
Daozi hesitated for a moment, then nodded affirmatively: "I want to hang lanterns for my mother, and also for my ancestors, my grandmother, and Grandpa Chu."
Daohua smiled and rubbed Daozi's head: "Okay, mother promises you, but you have to wait until your father comes back."
Xiao Morong was a little surprised to see that his aunt actually agreed to his younger cousin's request.
He still remembered that when he was seven or eight years old, his royal grandfather sent several palace lanterns to the Fourth Prince's Mansion. At that time, he also wanted to hang them for his father and mother himself, but was unfortunately sternly rejected by his mother.
He knew that his mother was doing this for his own good, but he still felt a little regretful.
Because of his own good, there are many things he cannot do since he was a child, and he doesn't even know the reasons for many of these things.
Watching his aunt talking in a low voice to his little cousin, Xiao Morong suddenly felt a little envious.
His mother was very busy and rarely spent time with him like his aunt spent time with Daozi.
Rice was a little impatient. After getting permission from Rice Flower, he couldn't sit still and kept asking when his father would come back so that he could hang lanterns.
Daohua took out a storybook and gave it to him, asking him to be quiet. When she looked up, she noticed that Xiao Morong looked a little lonely, so she smiled and walked over to him: "Do you miss home?"
Xiao Morong came back to his senses and looked up into a pair of eyes full of concern: "Aunt, I don't have any."
Daohua smiled and pulled Xiao Morong to sit down: "It's not shameful to miss home. Are you afraid that your aunt will laugh at you? If I were you, I would miss home too."
Xiao Morong looked embarrassed.
Daohua laughed: "When your uncle Wang comes back later, ask him to take you and Daozi to hang lanterns. Winter is so boring, you should exercise."
Seeing Daozi looking at him with burning eyes, Xiao Morong smiled and nodded: "Okay."
As the year was coming to an end, there was not much to do in the government office, so Xiao Yeyang came back early. As soon as he came back, Daozi hugged his legs.
"Dad, Mom asked you to take me and my fourth brother to hang lanterns."
Xiao Yeyang looked at Daohua, who smiled and explained to him, "The little fellow is curious. If you don't satisfy him, he'll probably keep thinking about it. Just treat it as a way to keep him company and entertain him."
Xiao Yeyang looked at Daozi and said, "I can take you to hang lanterns, but we have to make three rules. You are not allowed to try dangerous things like this on your own. You must get permission from adults before you can do this. Understand?"
Daozi nodded hurriedly.
Xiao Yeyang went back to the house and changed into casual clothes, then took Daozi and Xiao Moleng to hang lanterns all over the house.
Don't be fooled by Daozi's small size. Because he is well cared for, he is as tall as six-year-old Xiao Mobao. He is also strong. He practiced boxing and kicking with Chu Lang for a period of time. When he climbed the ladder, his lower body was very stable and his hands holding the ladder were strong.
He personally hung the lanterns in the main courtyard, and his curiosity was satisfied, so Daozi was extremely happy.
"Fourth brother, let's go hang red lanterns in our ancestors' yard."
After hanging all the red lanterns in Gu Jian's yard, the two men moved to Guo Ruomei and Chu Lang's yards.
After half a day, looking at the red lanterns hanging high in the yard, Daozi and Xiao Morong both felt a sense of accomplishment.
In the blink of an eye, it was New Year's Eve. Early in the morning, Xiao Morong followed Xiao Yeyang and his family of three to Nanshan Hall to pay New Year's greetings to Gu Jian.
Daozi and Xiao Morong were very happy after receiving the red envelopes from their elders.
"Fourth brother, you have to keep your red envelopes. These are your wife's money."
Listening to Daozi's words, Xiao Morong looked a little embarrassed. He knew what his wife Ben meant, but weren't these all prepared by his father and mother?
Also, Daozi is only four years old. Isn’t it too early for her to think about such things at such a young age?
Daozi had already swiftly put the red envelope into his pocket, muttering, "Wife, the more money you save, the more choices you will have."
Xiao Morong laughed: "Are you still afraid that Uncle Wang and Aunt Wang will ignore you?"
Daozi thought for a moment and said, "What belongs to them is theirs. If I use their things, should I choose what I like or what they like? So, it's better to keep it for myself."
Xiao Morong was stunned by what he said. After a while, he asked, "Why do you think so?"
Daozi shrugged and spread his hands, his face full of sorrow: "My mother said so." Then he straightened his back and imitated Daohua's way of lecturing him, raising his little orchid finger: "Eat my food, drink my drinks, and you have to listen to me."
Xiao Morong looked at Daozi in amazement and gave him a thumbs-up: "You've learned it quite well."
Daozi raised his eyebrows proudly: "Of course not, I am my mother's son."
