Chapter 38 Ming Qingyuan waved at the monitor, and soon…
Ming Qingyuan waved at the monitor, and soon the platform descended.
Gu Sheng casually glanced at the surveillance cameras before walking towards the platform.
Ming Qingyuan nudged Teacher Ye, who hadn't moved for a while, with his gun.
Teacher Ye looked at Gu Sheng with disapproval and said, "You shouldn't have come." His game was already doomed; if he wanted to come, he should have waited until it was over.
Gu Sheng looked at the chessboard.
The chess pieces looked strange, completely unlike any board game he had ever seen. As he looked at them, the term "Mystic War Flag" appeared in his mind, along with the rules of this type of war flag.
It's useless; it just adds up again.
This is a very old game, and very few people play it nowadays, let alone play it well.
However, "I" am clearly an outlier. With just one glance, a way to break the deadlock appeared in Gu Sheng's mind.
Gu Sheng smiled at Teacher Ye and said, "Teacher, why don't you go and rest for a while?"
Teacher Ye sighed, knowing that nothing he said now would make a difference.
He stepped off the platform, while Gu Sheng stepped onto it.
Everyone watched as the platform slowly rose again.
Gu Sheng looked at the ground getting further and further away, still a little scared. The platform wasn't very stable either; if you moved it even slightly, the whole platform would start to shake.
Once Gu Sheng was seated, he stopped moving.
The view from above is much better than from below; you can see the entire courtyard from here.
Gu Sheng had seen photos of the Obelisk Courtyard online before, but this was the first time he had seen it from this angle.
Looking at the scenery before him, Gu Sheng couldn't help but admire the aesthetic sense of the ancients; this courtyard was truly beautiful.
As he looked around, Gu Sheng noticed something unusual: three of the twelve statues at the edge of the courtyard seemed to have been disturbed.
These statues are so tall that Gu Sheng wouldn't have noticed them if they weren't on the platform.
The statues were not completely disturbed; only some inconspicuous parts were touched.
For example, the finger of a statue was moved to the opposite direction.
Even more strangely, the statue was not damaged after being disturbed.
In other words, these statues themselves can move.
Gu Sheng recalled the legend about the first Patriarch and the secret chamber.
Could it be...?
Ming Qingyuan had no idea what Gu Sheng was thinking. He looked at the absent-minded Gu Sheng and said, "It's your turn." He chuckled and said, "I need to remind you that, thanks to Teacher Ye's efforts, you're about to lose."
Gu Sheng didn't say anything, but simply moved the chess piece seemingly casually.
Teacher Ye, who had been watching closely, couldn't help but frown. Although he couldn't see exactly what move Gu Sheng had made, Gu Sheng's expression didn't seem to indicate that he had thought it through carefully.
However, he could understand why Gu Sheng did this, since the outcome of the game was already decided.
Teacher Ye clasped her hands together in front of her chest and prayed, hoping for a miracle, hoping someone would find this place, and hoping Gu Sheng could hold on a little longer.
After Gu Sheng made that move, Ming Qingyuan raised an eyebrow. He glanced at the chessboard but couldn't see the significance of Gu Sheng's move at all.
In his view, Gu Sheng had given up the struggle.
After a moment's thought, Ming Qingyuan moved the chess piece.
To his surprise, Gu Sheng didn't even look at it, picked up the chess piece, put it down, and made his next move.
Ming Qingyuan frowned slightly.
Gu Sheng turned his gaze away from the statue and looked at the surrounding surveillance cameras. He casually toyed with the discarded chess pieces and said, "Are those surveillance cameras watching us?" "We" here refers to Gu Sheng and Ming Qingyuan.
Ming Qingyuan played chess a little slowly. He didn't understand the intention behind Gu Sheng's move; it seemed like he just placed it randomly in the corner.
Ming Qingyuan focused his mind on the chessboard, made his next move, and captured one of Gu Sheng's pieces.
He smiled, certain that Gu Sheng had no chance of turning the tables.
Gu Sheng didn't care about losing that piece. He quickly moved the piece again and made his next move.
Ming Qingyuan's smile froze on his face. He looked down at the chessboard, still unable to discern Gu Sheng's intention in making that move, but he felt inexplicably irritated, as if something was spiraling out of control.
Ming Qingyuan rarely spoke up, asking, "Are you sure you want to get off here?"
Gu Sheng nodded. He wasn't interested in the chess game, but said, "You've arranged for a few snipers on the roof."
Ming Qingyuan looked at the chessboard and said, "You should focus on the game; you're about to lose."
He looked at Gu Sheng and said, "I've changed my mind."
He suddenly stood up, and the entire platform began to shake violently with his movement: "I don't want you to go to heaven with me, I want to send you to hell. If you lose, I'll kill you." As he spoke, he pressed the gun against Gu Sheng's forehead.
Gu Sheng's gaze didn't spare even a fraction of it for the pistol between his eyebrows; he was looking at the surrounding rooftops.
The view from the platform is much better than from below, allowing Gu Sheng to see many things that are not visible from below.
Gu Sheng glanced at the inconspicuous, fleeting black shadows within the walled enclosure on the roof and said, "Three. There are three snipers in total." He looked at Ming Qingyuan, "Am I right?"
Gu Sheng's casual attitude angered Ming Qingyuan.
A slight "click" sound was heard.
Ming Qingyuan released the safety of his pistol.
Gu Sheng remained remarkably calm. Facing Ming Qingyuan's expression, which suggested he was about to fire a shot at any moment, he said, "It's your turn."
Ming Qingyuan's face was filled with malice: "I'm not playing anymore, it's not fun. I'm going to kill you, and then kill those two pieces of trash." The two pieces of trash he was referring to were the two remaining archbishops.
Gasps came from below, though no one felt that Ming Qingyuan would really keep his promise and let them go after they won.
But no one expected him to suddenly change his mind. They could have stalled for time, and there might still be hope. Now, if...
Gu Sheng gently grasped Ming Qingyuan's hand holding the gun, but Ming Qingyuan just looked at him coldly without saying a word.
Gu Sheng laughed and said, "Are you afraid of losing?"
Those below could hear the conversation above. Zhou Mingxin looked at Gu Sheng, wondering if he had also gone mad, saying such things to provoke the deranged Ming Qingyuan.
Upon hearing Gu Sheng's words, Ming Qingyuan's eyes widened instantly, and then, to Zhou Mingxin's surprise, he suddenly burst into laughter.
Ming Qingyuan laughed as he put away his gun, saying, "I'm afraid of losing? Do you know what kind of mess your beloved Teacher Ye left you? You think I'd lose?"
Teacher Ye's expression changed slightly below, then she closed her eyes and continued reciting the prayer.
Ming Qingyuan's expression suddenly changed, turning cold: "I'll let you live a few more minutes." After saying that, he moved his piece and captured another of Gu Sheng's pieces.
Without any hesitation, Gu Sheng moved the chess piece and said to Ming Qingyuan, "It's your turn."
Ming Qingyuan looked at Gu Sheng expressionlessly. Gu Sheng pointed to the chessboard and said again, "It's your turn."
Ming Qingyuan looked down at the chessboard, moved the pieces, and then looked at Gu Sheng again, saying, "Are you in such a hurry to die?"
Gu Sheng made his move in a second and said, "Of course not."
The chess piece in Gu Sheng's hand moved rapidly between his fingers, seemingly randomly, yet with an extremely regular rhythm.
He continued, "Those snipers are watching this area too. Are they waiting for your orders?"
Ming Qingyuan narrowed his eyes at Gu Sheng and said maliciously, "That's right, they're waiting for me to give the order to kill you."
Gu Sheng did not show any fear; he simply smiled noncommittally.
Ming Qingyuan did not immediately make his next move, because this seemingly clear game of chess seemed to conceal something he could not see through.
Ming Qingyuan frowned as he stared at the chessboard, deep in thought.
Gu Sheng didn't speak either. His eyes were vacant as he recalled everything he had experienced since arriving here.
As Gu Sheng recalled, some related knowledge about his experiences and observations began to appear in his mind.
The entire old city of P unfolded before him, and Gu Sheng felt as if he were looking at the whole city from God's perspective.
Gu Sheng deconstructs the city and then reassembles it.
Then he still felt there were still some things he couldn't understand.
Gu Sheng disassembled the city again, added some things to it, and then reassembled it. This time, he seemed to have figured everything out.
Statues, courtyards, secret chambers, legends, cities, pentagrams, squares, archbishops, patriarchs, ceremonies, death, heaven...
Everything began to connect in Gu Sheng's mind, and knowledge he had never encountered before unfolded in his mind.
After pondering for a while, Ming Qingyuan picked up the chess pieces several times and put them down again. After going back and forth several times, he finally made up his mind and moved the pieces.
"Smack!"
"Smack!"
The instant Ming Qingyuan moved the chess piece, Gu Sheng also moved towards the chess piece that had been played.
Gu Sheng released the object with great force, and the sound echoed in the courtyard.
The courtyard is specially designed so that no matter how loud the sound is on the ground, it cannot be heard, but it is different above ground. The sound made here will echo throughout the entire courtyard.
The three snipers rubbed their ears simultaneously; for some reason, the sound was so sharp it hurt their ears.
The moment Gu Sheng put down the chess piece, he said, "I've figured it out."
Ming Qingyuan looked at Gu Sheng, snorted coldly, and said, "Have you figured out that you're doomed?"
Gu Sheng said, “No,” he looked at Ming Qingyuan, “I’ve figured out why you did all this.”
Ming Qingyuan looked at Gu Sheng, seemingly deep in thought, his eyes filled with complex emotions and a strange tenderness.
Suddenly, Ming Qingyuan gave a somewhat dazed smile and said, "No, you don't know." Although he had once regarded Gu Sheng as his mentor, friend, and guide, he had once believed that Gu Sheng knew everything that he did not.
But things are different now; he is no longer the person he used to be.
Now, their roles are reversed.
He knows more, sees more, and experiences more; he will no longer be swayed by Gu Sheng's statement that "there is no God."
He will prove it to Gu Sheng, he will make Gu Sheng believe that God exists, and will always exist from the past to the future.
Gu Sheng didn't care about Ming Qingyuan's words. He suddenly stood up and leaned closer to Ming Qingyuan.
Their foreheads were almost touching.
Gu Sheng said, "It doesn't matter whether you know or not, you should get some sleep first." Before Ming Qingyuan could react, Gu Sheng knocked him unconscious with a chop to the neck.
Before losing consciousness, Ming Qingyuan opened his eyes wide and looked at Gu Sheng in disbelief. He tried to reach for his pistol, but Gu Sheng was faster than him.
Upon seeing what Gu Sheng had done, the people below held their breath instantly, and some hid in fear.
However, the explosion and hail of bullets they expected did not occur.
