Chapter 4. How could someone who isn't insane do such a thing? ...

No one but a madman could do such a thing.

Thinking this, Shen An suddenly smiled. Yes, this was the Gu Sheng he knew.

He took a deep breath and then clicked start.

On the screen, the image started moving again.

Shen An had another question: how did Gu Sheng leave?

When the explosion occurred, the entire headquarters became an iron barrel with no escape space. What method did Gu Sheng use to successfully evacuate safely?

Shen An continued reading.

The subsequent surveillance video became intermittent, showing Gu Sheng repeatedly appearing in various corners of the headquarters planting bombs.

During this time, Gu Sheng swiftly and decisively dealt with several groups of people who came to deal with him.

Then, the explosions began.

The entire headquarters instantly descended into chaos, and no one had time to deal with Gu Sheng anymore.

After that, anyone who encountered Gu Sheng would run back as fast as they could, for fear of getting involved with this jinx.

The crowd scattered and fled, everyone searching for an exit.

Gu Sheng's bomb placement was meticulously calculated to ensure that each bomb would explode at the exact time, without a second's delay.

Shen An's attention was not on the people who were fleeing in all directions.

All his attention was on Gu Sheng.

Shen An rewound the video to recall when he placed the first bomb.

He watched the process of Gu Sheng planting the bomb again.

Gu Sheng placed the bombs in a strange order, but Shen An couldn't quite put her finger on what was wrong.

After a moment of thought, Shen An realized that he seemed to have forgotten some important information.

However, he believes that watching the video will definitely provide the answer.

He continued looking ahead.

After the explosion began, Gu Sheng did not rush to leave, but instead began to wander around the headquarters.

Gu Sheng's leisurely demeanor contrasted sharply with the chaotic crowd around him.

The more Gu Sheng acted this way, the more people around him distanced themselves from him.

In their eyes, Gu Sheng had become just like that underling back then, a madman who wanted to take the headquarters down with him.

The surveillance cameras behind were severely damaged, and Gu Sheng in the footage seemed to be able to teleport, appearing here one moment and there the next.

The whole house shook more and more violently, as if it would collapse at any moment.

The chaotic crowd continued to move in the direction they perceived as safe.

Even at this point, they still hadn't found a way out.

The surveillance videos are getting shorter and shorter, and the images inside are becoming increasingly chaotic.

The surveillance footage shows ruins left behind by the explosion everywhere.

Only Gu Sheng was walking in the opposite direction of the crowd.

Soon, Gu Sheng was all alone.

As he watched, Shen An suddenly understood why Gu Sheng had set the explosion sequence that way.

He was driving the crowd away.

Shen An recalled the investigation report he had read. According to the investigation, most of the people in the headquarters died in the northeast corner of the building, which was also the direction in which the building collapsed. Anyone who ran there was almost certain to die.

Shen An had never understood why those people were gathered there.

The police department concluded that there was an emergency exit there, and when the explosion occurred, people instinctively rushed towards it in order to escape the house as quickly as possible.

Shen An now understands that the conclusion given by the Public Security Bureau is correct, but not entirely correct.

The crowd gathered in that direction because there was a safety exit there.

But there is more than one emergency exit, so why did everyone choose the most dangerous one?

Because they had no other choice, explosions were occurring in other directions as they fled.

Gu Sheng planted the bomb. He knew where it would explode and where it wouldn't. He even knew where a secondary explosion would occur.

Gu Sheng wasn't just wandering around the headquarters; he was consciously avoiding the impending explosion.

He successfully bypassed all the explosions, passed through the ruins, and walked in the opposite direction from the crowd.

The explosion caused the house to tilt, and the stress generated by the tilt was enough to tear apart any solid wall.

In the final segment of surveillance footage filled with interfering horizontal lines, Gu Sheng stands at the gap in the wall that has been torn open by stress.

Gu Sheng's method of leaving was very simple, or rather, too simple. In the scene, he only needed to take one more step forward to leave this place that had become a living hell.

Just then, Gu Sheng seemed to realize something and turned to look in the direction of the surveillance camera.

The gun he had snatched from the guard had been thrown away by Gu Sheng to who-knows-where, and his black backpack was also gone. Now he was just like when he first entered headquarters, penniless.

Gu Sheng walked up to the monitor and stared straight at the camera.

Shen An's gaze met Gu Sheng's in the picture.

He had a strange feeling that Gu Sheng was looking at him through the surveillance camera.

Gu Sheng's expression remained calm, as if the house, which was about to become ruins, had nothing to do with him.

Looking at the footage on the monitor, Shen An recalled Gu Sheng's expression in the living room earlier.

At that time, Gu Sheng's expression was just like in the surveillance footage: calm, quiet, and seemingly posed no threat.

Thinking of this, for some reason, cold sweat broke out on Shen An's forehead.

Before this, Shen An had a very good impression of Gu Sheng, and although it was still good now, he felt that he seemed to have seen another side of Gu Sheng.

When the organization was established, Shen An and Gu Sheng were not familiar with each other.

Gu Sheng is basically stationed at headquarters, while Shen An belongs to a branch.

As luck would have it, the branch where Shen An was located was the same stronghold that Gu Sheng later dealt with.

When Shen An discovered that the stronghold had started a human trafficking business, he assumed it was the organization's leader's idea.

At the time, he was unaware that this was a decision made privately by the branch's management.

Shen An didn't want to get involved in these things, so he chose to leave the organization.

Later, the stronghold was cleared out by Gu Sheng.

Although Shen An did not do anything that violated the organization's rules, it was a fact that he had defected from the organization, so the boss asked Gu Sheng to deal with him.

Shen An first met Gu Sheng in his own safe house. He was often glad that he hadn't chosen to attack directly, but instead calmly sat down and chatted with Gu Sheng after discovering that Gu Sheng wasn't carrying a weapon.

Shen An had long been tired of this precarious life, so when Gu Sheng said he could stop living like this, he chose to become a witness voluntarily.

Later, Shen An was protected by the Public Security Bureau as a witness, and Gu Sheng faked Shen An's death scene to deceive the organization.

Later, Shen An learned that Gu Sheng was not as cold-blooded and cruel as the rumors within the organization suggested; the real Gu Sheng was even somewhat old-fashioned.

Gu Sheng doesn't kill people easily. He always comes to the police station to ask questions before killing someone, and he will only carry out the killing after the police officer nods in approval.

For those he couldn't kill, he would try to persuade them, just like he did with Shen An. If he couldn't persuade them, he would have the police temporarily detain them.

He never hesitated to kill those who deserved it.

However, Shen An had never seen Gu Sheng kill anyone.

Now, he has seen it.

The rumors aren't entirely wrong; at least for those who deserved to die, Gu Sheng was indeed cruel enough.

In the surveillance footage, Gu Sheng raised his foot and stepped on the monitor, causing the screen to go completely black.

Although there was no footage, Shen An could imagine that after destroying the surveillance cameras, Gu Sheng left the building through the gap, and then the building collapsed, leaving no one alive inside.

What Gu Sheng did was actually part of the Public Security Bureau's plan, but that wasn't their original intention.

The Public Security Bureau originally only instructed Gu Sheng to cause some damage inside the headquarters to force the people inside out. They had arranged for people outside to surround the entire building, and anyone who ran out of the building was to be shot dead on the spot.

However, Gu Sheng executed the first step of the plan too well; he didn't let anyone escape from the building at all.

After reading it, Shen An first cleared the traces on the computer, then he unplugged the USB drive and broke it in half.

But that wasn't enough. He would put the broken USB drive in his pocket and then find a place to burn it, leaving not a trace.

Shen An got into the driver's seat and turned the key to start the car.

Before leaving, he turned to look at the house where Gu Sheng lived, and then his eyes met those of Gu Sheng, who was standing by the window on the second floor.

In fact, with the current lighting, Shen An could only see a silhouette of Gu Sheng, but because of the video he had just watched, the image of Gu Sheng staring at the monitor at the last moment flashed through his mind.

With an unusually calm gaze, Gu Sheng herded the crowd into a corner like sheep, leaving them to face their inevitable death.

Although Shen An wouldn't sympathize with those executioners whose hands were stained with blood, he couldn't help but compare himself to Gu Sheng. If he had been in that building, would he have been able to see through Gu Sheng's intentions? Would he have had a chance to escape?

The answer is probably no.

At this point, Shen An's evaluation of Gu Sheng changed from "a good person" to "a good person with extremely deep cunning".

Fortunately, he has now sided with Gu Sheng.

After everything was over, the police learned that Shen An used to be in the organization, specializing in investigating hostile forces, and was sometimes assigned to be an undercover agent.

They recognized Shen An's abilities and recruited him to their side.

Shen An is now an unofficial staff member of the Public Security Bureau, just like Gu Sheng.

Shen An snapped out of his thoughts, waved to Gu Sheng, and then drove away.

At this moment, Gu Sheng had no idea what Shen An was thinking, nor did he know what "he" had done.

Gu Sheng just looked at the car downstairs that he had never seen before and guessed that it was the car that group of people had driven when they came.

The fact that the car didn't leave means that Shen An didn't leave either.

Gu Sheng looked at the car and just wanted him to leave as soon as possible.

However, Gu Sheng thought about it again and realized that staying wasn't a bad idea either. He had already called the police station, and when the police arrived, they could arrest Shen An as well, thus catching them all in one fell swoop.

In Gu Sheng's eyes, Shen An was not a good person either; at most, his relationship with those people was one of double-crossing.

Gu Sheng saw Shen An wave at him, and he felt that Shen An was provoking him.

If you're going to leave, then leave. Why are you waving your hand? That's too arrogant.

Watching Shen An drive away, Gu Sheng felt a little regretful.

The sheriff was very efficient and arrived quickly.

During questioning by the sheriff, Gu Sheng recounted the entire incident.

In Gu Sheng's account, he is portrayed as a perfect victim, while the dead villains are depicted as madmen.

They burst in out of nowhere, said something Gu Sheng couldn't understand, and then pointed a gun at him, intending to kill him.

Fortunately, the group suddenly started fighting amongst themselves, and one of them killed the others and left, which allowed Gu Sheng to barely escape with his life.

Of course, he glossed over some less important details when he spoke, such as his sudden ability to disarm someone with his bare hands.

The sheriff took down Gu Sheng's words, then said with a suspicious look, "You mean those people suddenly broke in to kill you, and you've never seen them before?"

Gu Sheng nodded firmly. Yes, that's right, that's exactly it.

The sheriff frowned slightly. He recognized a few of the dead; they were all people on the city's wanted list.

The reason they were wanted had nothing to do with burglary; what they did was far worse.

Given their status as wanted criminals, it's unlikely they would risk being caught to kill a complete stranger.

The sheriff did not believe Gu Sheng's explanation.

He glanced at his busy colleagues and suddenly asked, "Isn't there a security camera in the living room?"

Gu Sheng was about to say no when he suddenly remembered that when the housekeeper showed him the house first, he mentioned that hidden cameras were installed in all the rooms except the master bedroom, mainly to ensure the safety of the people living there.

Gu Sheng was still in a daze from his time travel, as if he were in a dream. He couldn't even fully understand what the butler was saying.

He just instinctively asked if these surveillance videos would be seen by others.

The housekeeper said that the surveillance cameras were not connected to the internet, so there was no need to worry about them being transmitted.

The monitoring room is on the third floor. The housekeeper even took Gu Sheng to see it. The housekeeper told Gu Sheng that he could turn off the cameras if needed.

After that, Gu Sheng put the matter out of his mind and hasn't been to the third floor since.

Gu Sheng swallowed back the words that were about to come out.

To speak or not to speak?
