Chapter 31 Shadow

Luo Chi fell asleep on Ming Weiting's lap.

His breathing was light, even and weak. His thin back with clear lines rose and fell slowly, and half of his face was buried in his arms.

Ming Weiting placed his arms behind his back, and after making sure that the force was stable enough, he continued to carefully pick him up and put him back on the bed.

"Sir." Ming Lu waited for him to cover Luo Chi with the quilt, and then spoke at the right time, "The expert group has almost reached a conclusion."

Ming Weiting nodded: "I'll go right away."

He tucked up the last bit of the quilt, stood up and walked to the door, but was stopped by Minglu: "Sir, please leave your coat behind."

Ming Weiting stopped, unbuttoned his suit, handed his coat to Ming Lu, and asked, "Why?"

"It's the custom of the people on the shore." Minglu said, "The clothes are still here, which means you will come back."

There will be no such problem on board.

No matter how big a cruise ship is, the space is limited. Without considering various emergency measures, anyone's activities will always have a relatively fixed range.

But it’s different on land. The land stretches vastly, with roads leading to countless places farther than the distance. Anyone can come and anyone can leave at any time.

Ming Weiting nodded and remembered this. He watched Minglu hang his coat on the hanger, took a closer look, and pointed out that the location was not conspicuous enough: "You can put it in a more obvious place."

Minglu held the suit and smiled when he heard it: "Yes."

Ming Weiting said to Luo Chi that he would see him later, left the ward and went to the consultation office.

He slowly clenched his hands on the road, and there seemed to be a chill between his knuckles.

Luo Chi's hands were powerless, cold and soft in his palms. Apart from rushing to find something to protect himself, he did not move on his own at all.

That day, he recognized Luo Chi again in the rain, bought Luo Chi's paintings, and sent Luo Chi to the hotel. Although the conversation that night was a bit laborious, they were both very happy.

Although I now know that Luo Chi was definitely not truly happy at that time, but at least at that time, the smile in his eyes was still pure and bright. He looked at Luo Chi who was talking excitedly. He looked into Luo Chi's eyes and recalled the clearest night sky dotted with stars that he had ever seen on the route approaching the North Pole.

He didn't notice anything, and was relieved to see Luo Chi regained his energy.

After settling Luo Chi, he temporarily left the hotel to discuss a business deal that was actually not that important. He had actually decided to come back.

Luo Chi didn't know about this.

It turned out that Luo Chi really thought he was going to leave, so he called him when he reached the door.

Luo Chi called him and stared at him intently. At one point, a thought suddenly occurred to him that Luo Chi seemed to be very uncomfortable, but Luo Chi was only in a daze for a moment, then slowly narrowed his eyes.

Luo Chi narrowed his eyes, and then just like today, he could no longer tell whether Luo Chi was feeling uncomfortable or not.

After a few minutes, Luo Chi suddenly regained his previous liveliness and generously kept stuffing the script into his hands.

Luo Chi stuffed the script into his hand, but his right hand didn't have enough strength and he dropped the script several times, so he used his left hand to stuff the script into his arms. Luo Chi's right hand hung at his side and trembled, as if he had never said such words or done such things before, but he bravely raised his eyes and looked at him regardless of everything.

Luo Chi looked at him and assured him again and again that this script must be worth a lot of money, perhaps even more valuable than the business deal he was about to negotiate.

He is too stupid.

He didn't understand what Huo Miao said. He took the happy Luo Zhi outside as real.

He did not see the dim fire that was trapped in the thick fog far away, and because he had almost completely lost the ability to communicate, he could only ask him in this way laboriously and clumsily, using up his last bit of strength and courage, "Can you stay a little longer?"

He should have gone earlier to learn the habits of the people on shore, and even if he really had to leave for a while, he should have left his coat in the room.

From then on, when Luo Chi was alone in the room, he never wore a coat again.

There was already someone waiting for Ming Weiting at the office door. When they saw him coming, someone immediately came to greet him and led him in.

The head of the affiliated family was also there, and he quickly pulled out a chair for him and let him sit across from the conference table.

Ming Weiting calmed his mind and listened attentively to the diagnosis of Luo Chi.

"It is indeed a tumor, and the location is not very good, but the imaging findings tend to be benign, and the prognosis will be very good after surgical resection."

After a long paragraph of professional terms, the attending doctor gave the answer as clearly as possible: "Mr. Luo's hearing abnormalities, dizziness, blurred vision, weakness on one side of his limbs, and a large number of memory fragments are all caused by compression of some brain areas."

Ming Weiting listened quietly for a while and said, "That is to say, after the operation, these abnormalities can be restored."

Ming Weiting said: "As long as he takes good care of himself, he will be as healthy as before."

"That's right." The doctor nodded and explained in detail, "The deafness caused by the tumor compression is in one ear. Mr. Luo's weakness in his right hand and right leg can be restored, and his original hearing level on the right side can also be restored."

Luo Chi's hearing loss on the left side is due to an old injury from childhood. If it had been treated promptly at the time of the injury, there would actually be no sequelae.

Even if due to some special reasons, treatment was delayed until three years later. If targeted remedial treatment had been given immediately after the child was brought home, most of his hearing could have been restored, and he would not have suffered from tinnitus until now.

The time window for treating this type of traumatic deafness is very narrow, and if you want to intervene now, you can only consider hearing aids or cochlear implants.

"However," the doctor hesitated, "the location of the tumor is not good. Memory impairment may occur after surgery. This is probably unavoidable."

Ming Weiting asked: "Don't you remember what happened in the past?"

"It's very likely... But the skills and life abilities you've already acquired won't be affected, as they're not in this location." The doctor showed him the scan results, "What will probably be lost is a lot of memory about people and events in the past."

Ming Weiting nodded: "Got it."

Seeing his calm reaction, the doctor breathed a sigh of relief: "It may not be a bad thing."

The reason why several departments need to jointly consult is that although these issues are important, they are not the most urgent at all.

Luo Chi's mental condition is very poor, and he has already shown obvious signs of stupor. This was not because of the tumor in his brain - or rather, Luo Chi had been trying his best to protect himself, but because of this sudden illness, which he himself was not aware of, he finally no longer had the ability to protect himself.

If it weren't for the frequent attacks of dizziness and nausea, Luo Chi might not have been stuck in the mall and had to hide in his car, and the car would not have been destroyed.

If his right leg had not become increasingly weak, making it difficult for him to even walk normally, Luo Chi could have simply turned around and left when he was blocked by Luo Cheng in the hotel.

Given Luo Chi's physical condition, he should have been able to retain some hearing on the left side and not be completely deaf. It was the pervasive malice that wrapped him tightly, and he really had no ability to process anything he heard, so he automatically blocked out those voices.

...If he hadn't been deaf, Luo Chi would have known that when he just offered a price for the painting, Mr. Shadow had already paid the bill without hesitation.

This disease created cracks in the armor that had always been strong, and the malice that had never weakened naturally poured in through these cracks.

Those people finally succeeded. Luo Chi was completely swallowed up and swept into the dark icy sea.

Because they wanted to discuss Luo Chi's mental state, the psychology department obtained some information obtained from the Ming family's investigation. When they read it, they realized the difficulty of the situation.

"Other problems are not difficult to solve, but Mr. Luo's own condition must be restored first."

The doctor said: "First take good care of your body. At least when all indicators meet the surgical standards, you can respond to the outside world and have the most basic desire to survive, then you can consider surgery."

Ming Weiting was silent for a moment: "How much time do we have to make adjustments?"

"It's not urgent. You can take conservative treatment first. If you are in a more familiar and relaxing place, you don't have to be hospitalized. You just need to monitor your physical condition strictly and come for a checkup every week."

The doctors have discussed the answer: "Three months to six months is enough time. If the condition is still not good by then, we can only force surgery."

Ming Weiting had asked all the questions he wanted to know and stopped talking.

He flipped through the prepared treatment plan page by page until he read the last page carefully, and then closed the entire plan.

"Sir," said the man who was with him, "it's not all bad."

He looked at Ming Weiting's expression and spoke carefully: "If everything goes well, after you recover, Mr. Luo's life will be completely new."

"It will go smoothly." Ming Weiting put away the treatment plan, stood up and thanked the doctor, and then looked at him after leaving the meeting room, "You are from the Xun family."

Ming Weiting thought for a moment: "Xun Zhen?"

The man followed him out, and when his name was called, he quickly stopped and said, "Yes."

Ming Weiting lowered his head and looked at the treatment plan again.

He knew what the other party meant. This illness made Luo Chi lose the ability to protect himself and was completely swallowed up by the malice. However, by chance, it gave him a chance to start over.

Luo Chi has recovered from his illness and can completely put the past behind him. He can do whatever he wants, go wherever he wants, and be whoever he wants to be, without being bound by anything.

But that fire doesn't need to be restrained by anything.

That is the freest soul, which should chase the wind in the mountains and play with the moon in the stream. He could have encountered that fire on some long and pleasant flight. It would have been the most dazzling one in the crowd and could have been seen at a glance anywhere.

He didn't know what a good thing this was. How good a thing must it be to make someone get sick and almost lose his life, and it could be considered a rare relief and salvation.

"Your family's specialty is medical treatment," Ming Weiting asked, "Are you an authority in psychology?"

"Authoritative, I studied this myself." Xun Zhen said, "We will arrange the most reasonable treatment and counseling process and send the most suitable consultant to talk to Mr. Luo."

Ming Weiting nodded.

These arrangements were discussed in the conference room, and Ming Weiting had heard them clearly. What he wanted to say was something else: "I want you to treat another patient."

Xun Zhen was stunned: "Who? Someone related to Mr. Luo?"

"A madman." Ming Weiting didn't say yes or no, "He has been crazy for a few years."

It was impossible for him to allow this person to have any relationship with Luo Chi, but if we talk about blood relationship, the answer to this question is indeed obvious.

"He is mentally ill and is recuperating at home." Ming Weiting spoke slowly, "He told everyone that his son was willful and lost his sister..."

Xun Zhen reacted instantly: "Mrs. Luo?"

Perhaps he realized the matter too quickly. As he blurted it out, he also noticed the coldness that instantly overflowed from Ming Weiting's eyes.

Xun Zhen wiped the cold sweat from his palms and lowered his head.

Mrs. Luo does not have attacks all the time. When she was in good condition, in order to comfort her and let her relax, Luo Chengxiu would let the adopted son accompany her to some less formal gatherings.

...How many people has Mrs. Luo told this matter to, and how many times?

How many people actually know this about Luo Zhi?

Xun Zhen didn't know either. He only knew that his wife had heard it no less than ten times and her ears were almost callused.

One time when his wife came back, she couldn't help complaining to him.

——What is there to say? No matter how willful a seven-year-old child is, can he steal his sister and sell her? If a child is lost due to failure to watch over him/her, shouldn't the parent be the one reflecting on this?

No matter how dissatisfied they are, this is the Luo family's family affair after all, and it is not appropriate for outsiders like them to comment. The wife could only try not to talk, and later gradually distanced herself from the neurotic Mrs. Luo.

"I've seen her a few times. Typical hysterical psychosis, but it shouldn't be that serious."

Xun Zhen spoke cautiously: "She seems to be... intentionally indulging herself in an attack."

Was Mrs. Luo mentally normal when she fell ill? It is impossible for nature to be normal. Whether it is disordered behavior or performative movements, it is almost impossible for normal people to imitate it.

But whether this kind of illness is caused by the strong stimulation that she cannot bear, or whether she deliberately let her mind fall into this chaos, and would rather live in a daze and madness to avoid some more severe punishment...only she herself knows it clearly.

Ming Weiting didn't care about that: "Can it be cured?"

"It's very easy. The course of a single attack of this disease is not long." Xun Zhen answered quickly, but couldn't help frowning, "But...will the head of the Luo family agree?"

Although it is not difficult to treat, the problem is not the difficulty of treatment.

They are just a hospital. If the Luo family has no active intention to treat Mrs. Luo, they can't bring people into the Luo family, tie her up and force her to receive treatment...

"Master Luo?" Ming Weiting seemed to have just remembered this person, "Oh, right."

Xun Zhen looked at his expression and felt a chill rising in his back for no reason. He swallowed hard.

...He suddenly remembered that before rushing to the hospital, he heard people say that the Luo family's business seemed to have suddenly encountered serious problems overnight.

The commotion was so big that even those who were not involved vaguely heard about it. It seemed that of the entire ship's cargo, only the Luo family's container was detained at the port.

The Luo family has been making great strides recently. Taking advantage of the birthday party they held for their adopted son, they have established connections with several multinational companies and are competing for several big projects.

A lot of money was spent in the early stages of the project, and the Luo family's working capital was transferred back and forth between the main company and several subsidiaries, with the time being precisely timed to half a day. The money for the goods had already been paid in advance, but suddenly a hole appeared on the other side, and the penalty for breach of contract was soaring every second.

Unfortunately, the Luo family has been in a mess these days and there is no one they can rely on.

Luo Jun is quite capable and should have been the most capable right-hand man of the Luo family head. I don't know what's wrong with him these days. He has abandoned the company that is surrounded by enemies and just keeps looking for people to inquire about Luo Zhi's affairs.

The film and television company that the adopted son of the Luo family had just taken over collapsed, and the little star who was the mainstay of the company had completely lost his chance of recovery. There was chaos everywhere, and the front desk was filled with lawyers' letters from the implicated endorsement companies and crews.

The head of the Luo family was so anxious about this mess that he tried every possible solution and called people for help overnight. However, given the current momentum of the Luo family, families with average relations have long avoided them, for fear of being involved in some gossip.

The current head of the Ren family is Ren Chenbai, and this person can't be found anywhere. Ren's father was originally a son-in-law who lived with the wife's family. He just drank tea and practiced calligraphy every day. He didn't take care of any serious matters. He could only apologize to Luo Chengxiu.

Until two or three o'clock in the middle of the night, some of them received calls from Luo Chengxiu, but after that, everything quieted down and there was no more movement from the Luo family.

As time goes by, the penalty for breach of contract has reached a figure that even they are shocked by. Many people couldn't help but discuss privately that such a bottomless pit would be filled by even the Luo family having to sell assets.

...When they talked about this this morning, they still found it strange.

With such a big thing happening, would Luo Chengxiu just be busy until two or three in the morning and then just throw up his hands and go to sleep?

"He seemed to be drinking tea at my house."

Ming Weiting lowered his eyes: "I forgot to ask someone to let him go back."

Xun Zhen was speechless and stunned for a long while.

He had seen the scene of "drinking tea" at the Ming family, and now he finally connected everything. He couldn't help but lower his head and sighed silently in his heart that it was all his own fault.

If Patriarch Luo still can't figure it out, it won't be long before he has to admit another patient.

"Let him go back." Ming Weiting said, "Go and take his wife away in front of him."

Ming Weiting thought for a moment and said, "If he wants to protect his wife so much, he can disagree. If he wants the goods, I will let you take them away."

Xun Zhen shuddered unconsciously: "Yes."

"Tell him to give him half a day to take care of the household chores." Ming Weiting looked at his watch. "Come for tea in the evening."

Xun Zhen lowered his head and responded, then took out his phone to make arrangements one by one.

After Ming Weiting finished speaking, he didn't stay any longer and turned back to Luo Chi's ward.

He really wanted to go back to Luo Chi as soon as possible.

He did something wrong last time. He shouldn't have gone for that deal. Although I only had to leave temporarily this time, I still felt anxious.

Ming Weiting walked quickly back to the front of the ward. He walked to the half-open door and reached out to push it open when he heard Ming Lu talking to Luo Chi inside.

Not long after Ming Weiting left, Luo Chi woke up.

After waking up, he was the only one in the ward. Mr. Shadow was not there, and Luo Chi did not have any special reaction.

When Ming Lu came back after arranging things, he found Luo Chi had woken up. He helped Luo Chi sit up, spoke to him slowly, and showed him the coat left by Ming Weiting.

Luo Chi leaned against a row of soft pillows at the head of the bed, slightly curved his eyes, and listened quietly to what Ming Lu said.

"It's true." Minglu looked at him as if he were his own grandchild, and his voice became softer unconsciously. He patiently and slowly made his mouth shape more clearly, "The master will be back in a moment."

Minglu took the suit jacket and put the sleeve in Luo Chi's hand: "Touch it, it's real."

Luo Chi's right hand was placed beside him, and when Minglu touched it with the crisp fabric of his suit, his eyes curved a little more, and then his eyelashes slowly fell quietly again.

Those pale fingers could not bear the weight of the cloth and were slightly bent.

Minglu took the sleeve away from his fingers, but Luo Chi did not react.

Minglu stopped talking and slowly put the suit over Luo Chi.

The current Luo Chi cannot process this sentence. Luo Chi has no memory related to "really coming back", so it cannot trigger any response.

Luo Chi's last memory related to this situation was that he wanted to use a script to leave behind a Mr. Shadow, a person he had never met before.

It was because he was not brave enough and did not say those words firmly.

That Mr. Shadow guy is very nice.

If he expressed his thoughts well and clearly, Mr. Shadow would stay with him for another five minutes.

Perhaps triggered by the same scene, Luo Chi suddenly opened his mouth and his throat moved with difficulty.

It seemed like he hadn't used this place to make sounds for a long time. The air flow blew through, causing a sharp burning pain. He didn't know if he succeeded or not: "Shadow..."

This was the first time Minglu saw him have a clear autonomous reaction, so he quickly stepped forward and asked, "What do you want?"

"Shadow." Luo Chi's throat hurt badly, and his head hurt too, as if something was stirring recklessly, and bright red molten iron was pouring into it, "Shadow, sir."

Luo Chi sat there in a daze. He was tortured by the long-lost intense pain and broke out in cold sweats. He vaguely sensed someone coming in and instinctively suppressed all reactions.

Since he was very young, Luo Chi would not let others see him feeling sad.

People who care about him feel sad because of his pain, but people who care about him shouldn't feel sad. He will not let those who hate him feel happy because of his suffering.

Luo Chi was in so much pain that his consciousness was blurred. He was not clear about anything and just slowly narrowed his eyes.

Then he saw a shadow in the fog.

The confused consciousness suddenly became a mess in the mind. The thinking gears that had not turned for too long had already rusted and could not move at all, just grinding the nerves back and forth.

He is a little liar, he is not generous, he is not kind, he wants to leave a shadow with a script.

He was so happy, he wanted to be happy for five more minutes. He was not brave enough. If he could do it again, he would definitely do the bravest thing.

He would grab Mr. Shadow, ask him to take a photo with him, and generously ask him to stay with him for another five minutes while he played guitar for him.

Mr. Shadow squeezed his hand.

...Luo Chi looked at his hands.

His mind was completely frozen, and it took him a long time to realize that there was another person's hand on his hand.

Luo Chi was a little puzzled. He moved his eyes blankly with difficulty, letting his sight focus little by little on the fog.

Ming Weiting held Luo Chi's hand tightly and gently rubbed his hair with his other hand.

Then he saw big tears suddenly flow out of those eyes which had always been bent and were dark and empty.
