Chapter Twenty-One: Assassination

Panic ensued.

The Crown Princess hurriedly summoned her guards.

The assassins, however, paid no attention and made no attempt to conceal that they had only one target—King Ye.

But the person involved was quite relaxed, unlike the Crown Princess and Yang Yurong who were in a panic.

Yang Yurong had never seen such a scene before, and in her panic, she tried to grab the person who seemed the safest in the room.

But her grabbing caused trouble, angering both groups at the same time.

The assassin, assuming she was trying to save Prince Ye, also lunged at her. Prince Ye, however, was disgusted by her touch and quickly flung his sleeve away.

This flick of the wrist allowed Yang Yurong to dodge the assassin's sword.

At that moment, a woman joined them from outside the door and quickly killed several assassins.

The Crown Princess exclaimed in delight, "An Shi Nu!"

Nan Xiangyue nodded slightly, but her hands kept moving.

After all, Nan Xiangrong is skilled in martial arts, so how could Nan Xiangyue be any less skilled?

Prince Ye suddenly looked at the woman. It was her! The woman on the second floor! Was it An Shi Nu?

The assassins were furious; the woman who suddenly appeared had ruined their plans.

And King Ye's men also arrived; they were the same elite troops we saw at the city gate yesterday.

The fighting raged on the scene, and the Crown Princess's people also joined in.

Finally, everything calmed down.

But the limbs and blood scattered all over the ground showed what had just happened.

The last few assassins also committed suicide, leaving no survivors.

"Search," Prince Ye said coldly.

"Yes." The men immediately went to search the corpse for something.

Upon seeing this, Yang Yurong finally couldn't help but turn her head and gag.

King Ye sneered, "So the women of your Northern Dynasty are nothing special. I thought they were so brave. They're no different from the ladies of our Southern Kingdom."

King Ye couldn't help but feel angry when he thought about the touch just now.

The Crown Princess's face darkened, and she glanced at Yang Yurong: "How can she represent all the women of our Great Wei? There are always exceptions. Just like in your Southern Dynasty, there are women with unparalleled talent and strategies, while the men are as timid as mice!"

Only the parties involved truly know who it refers to.

King Ye glanced at the Crown Princess meaningfully, then remained silent. He walked up to Nan Xiangyue and asked, "You are indeed different. What is your name?" King Ye naturally knew the name of the only daughter of the only non-royal prince of the Northern Dynasty, but he wanted to hear her say it herself.

"Nan Xiangyue".

"It sounds beautiful."

Hearing Ye Wang's deep voice, Nan Xiangyue inexplicably felt like she was being teased.

"My name is Nan Lin. Remember that."

"Your Highness, I found this on the assassin." He then handed over an ornament with a peculiar circular pattern.

"These assassins included both men and women, and given the presence of the witch clan's totem, it can be basically concluded that the witch clan was responsible."

"Is that so?" Nan Lin remained noncommittal.

Nan Xiangyue felt this was too conspicuous. Did the Wu Clan really send assassins carrying their own tribal totem? And such blatant actions only strengthened the alliance between the two countries. It seemed like a thankless task!

Nan Lin saw Nan Xiangyue's thoughtful expression and a hint of appreciation flashed in his eyes.

The Crown Princess didn't think much of it and said directly, "I will go to the palace to report to the Empress Dowager right away." With that, she hurriedly left.

Helpless, Nan Xiangyue could only order the people left behind by the Crown Princess to clean up the scene. They couldn't leave it for the guests to clean up.

However, the auction house will probably be unable to open for a long time, even though it has nothing to do with the auction house and is simply an innocent victim of this disaster.

He glanced at the listless Yang Yurong on the ground, shook his head, and left.

Ye Wang watched Nan Xiangyue walk away, lost in thought.

"withdraw."

The group left completely.

By the time Yang Yurong came to her senses, only the guards who had moved the corpse remained in the room. She was immediately filled with resentment; not only had she failed to get close to Prince Ye, but she had also gotten herself into a mess.

In the main hall, after listening to the Crown Princess's account, the Empress sighed and said, "I understand. You may leave."

"This Chang Si is honest enough but not smart enough!" the Empress said to someone.

"Your Majesty need not worry. The Crown Princess is capable enough to maintain the status quo."

The Queen changed the subject. "Who do you think did this?"

"The Southern Emperor," the man said with certainty.

"Have you found out the reason why the Southern Emperor suddenly wanted to form an alliance, which I asked you to investigate?"

"Your Majesty, I have discovered that when the Southern Emperor was traveling incognito, he took a fancy to a woman and wanted to bring her back to the palace. The woman refused, and it seems that the Southern Emperor used some underhanded means to anger that person. It was later found that this woman is a witch from the Wu tribe."

"Witch!" the Queen exclaimed. In each generation of the witch clan, there is a chieftain and a witch. The two must remain virgins until the next chieftain and witch appear, at which point they may mate to bless the witch clan for thousands of generations.

"Ha! This Southern Emperor is quite cunning. He angered the Witch Clan himself, yet he seeks out our Great Wei to share the Witch Clan's anger."

"However, this witch clan has indeed existed for far too long; it's time for them to disappear."

After all, which ruler doesn't want to unify the world and go down in history?

Prince An's Mansion.

Nan Xiangrong looked at her sister, who was covered in blood, and asked, "What happened? Are you alright?"

"It's nothing. I just happened to run into the assassins who were trying to kill Prince Ye while I was out on the street."

"Assassinate Prince Ye?"

"Yes, on the surface they appear to be from the Wu tribe."

Nan Xiangrong quickly grasped the essence, but didn't ask any more questions. She simply reminded him, "Don't get too close to the people of the Southern Dynasty."

Nan Xiangyue frowned: "I know."

night.

King Ye came to the grove once again.

"Go investigate the officials surnamed Wang in Kyoto, some wealthy merchants in the capital, and... the residence of the Fourth Princess. The mark on his forehead is already clear enough. If you still can't find anything, you don't need to come back."

"yes."

"My imperial nephew has given me a very generous gift! How should I repay him?"

The people below quickly lowered their heads, not daring to utter a word.
