The empire has failed...
When Princess Nine and her party arrived at Winston, they found soldiers everywhere looking dejected.
Many of the civilians who lived here had already fled, and now that the remaining people have witnessed the fall of the capital, it is likely that even more will leave.
"Where is Sixth Brother? Where is Prince Varian?"
The Ninth Princess ran all the way to the military camp because she had heard a lot of bad news about Varian along the way.
Led by the Knight of Dawn, she met the Royal Steward, who was directing the deployment of the defenses. He was also the leader of the Royal Guard and had previously assisted the Royal Army and the Sixth Prince Varian in defending the Welsh Castle.
"The Sixth Prince... was accidentally struck in the spine by the Demon King's attack during the final onslaught of the Demon Clan. He is now severely injured and has been taken to the City of Resurrection, accompanied by his Dawn Knights and the Royal Army..."
"What? Sixth Brother is seriously injured and isn't he here?"
"Then who are these Dawn Knights...?"
"Disguised."
The royal steward shook his head with a wry smile. These people were all his royal guards in disguise. It was just a little trick to give the retreating troops some confidence and make them think that the sixth prince was still fighting alongside them.
They didn't explain it publicly, and no one doubted it.
However, now that the Ninth Princess has been born, the title of Sixth Prince is no longer needed.
Left with no other choice, Verocia had to return to her current residence, where a meeting was taking place.
This meeting was organized by the Grand Mage, and during the meeting, the Grand Mage and the General had a heated argument.
No one dared to step forward to stop them. Liu Lang and Xiao Dai were both terrified. These two were about to start fighting!
"It seems that only the Third Princess and the Ninth Princess can be persuaded."
"Didn't the Ninth Princess go out to find her brother? And the Third Princess isn't familiar with us, so how can we persuade her?"
And so, before the Ninth Princess returned, the General and the Grand Mage parted on bad terms.
"You mean them? That's just how they are. Don't be fooled by General Sagaros's resentful expression right now; when it comes to battle, he'll still listen to Lord Azro."
In her early years, the Ninth Princess had heard the Grand Master tell her interesting stories about the Great General.
Among these arguments were disagreements, but no matter how much they argued, they always trusted each other in crucial moments and wouldn't let each other down. This had long become their habit, and the frequent arguments didn't affect their close friendship.
Hmm, that's clever!
To unsuspecting outsiders, this would make it seem as if the Grand General and the Grand Mage were at odds, which would be helpful for the emperor in managing the empire, especially in terms of checks and balances. He wouldn't need to worry about it much... uh... really not need to worry about it?
It seems the Great General was later transferred to a secret realm to suppress the void, so he was probably still useless.
"So what did you finally hear?"
"The first half of the meeting went well. Everyone mainly talked about the situation they encountered in the capital. The nobles said they had already contacted their Sky Ship. After what happened in the capital, these nobles also need to make preparations as soon as possible, so they will be separated from us soon."
To be honest, the nobles of your empire are actually quite good. At least they are loyal to the empire and willing to protect their subjects in their own territories. They don't exploit them.
In the middle... Lord Azrod and Lord Sagaros got into an argument about the demon race, and then they debated their future plans...
"
In the latter half of the meeting, Archmage Azro wanted to take advantage of the demons' presence in the capital to continue his research on the Void and investigate the relationship between the demons and the Void.
Sargalos believed that this was the most dangerous time for the empire. Although the emperor was in trouble, the eldest prince was still alive, and he wanted to help the eldest prince, Dalark, to restore the empire's glory. Most importantly, he didn't trust the nobles...
There's nothing left to discuss now.
After the meeting, the Archmage met privately with the nobles, while the General took the Third Princess Eletta out to scout and see what they thought. He would then contact the First Prince Darak and provide him with protection.
The nobles will stay here for a few days before leaving, and the general will take the third princess and others to seek refuge with the eldest prince.
So in the end, only they were left.
"Why... why can't the story have a happy ending when everyone has escaped death and ended up together?"
The Ninth Princess was somewhat saddened. Perhaps because she was still young, she did not know what everyone was thinking. She just felt that now that the empire was suffering such a great calamity, shouldn't everyone unite together?
"We cannot control the behavior of others, but we can enhance our own reputation and influence to attract people to our side, rather than relying on wishful thinking."
Old Mark walked up to her with his pipe, and Verocia looked at Mark with some confusion. This sentence... sounds so familiar?
Who said that to me?
etc...
"Isn't this what the Prime Minister once told me? Marco? You..."
"Haha, the Prime Minister once told me that too, but that was a long time ago, back when he was the first High Priest of the Holy Church."
Mark laughed and then told Vera amusing stories about the former prime minister.
However, he mostly heard it from others, and at that time he did not know that the first High Priest was the Prime Minister.
After Verocia calmed down, Mark handed her the things he was carrying.
"Huh? What's this?"
